Paul Just a little oil smoke - the oil is probably collecting on top of the inlet valve guides and sucking down into the engine on start up... I wouldn't be concerned unless it starts doing it while running or is using a lot of oil... As for the starting problem - probably to do with the distributor curve - I assume you have a modified one? check what your static timing is - should be about 8 degrees. Setting your dizzy for maximum advance sometimes means that the other end of the advance is messed up... Thing is,... MORE

Jim, Recon cylinders are usually ok, but if they go again, I have not been able to find seal to fit, due to the increase in bore size after they have been machined out. I went for a new master cylinder. That way I can replace the seals in the future. "Stevens, David" 4612... MORE

David I recall you have a 1500? The 1500 rack (& late 1275) is lubricated with grease. Early 'upsidedown LHD Morris Minor' racks (on RHD Spridgets) are the ones which are lubricated with oil... Mine is an early rack - leaks like the Exxon Valdez.... James james@... 4582... MORE

Funny old system this, I definately posted a message but it appears not to have been posted...........so forgive me if this message appears twice. Promblem: as some of you are aware I have recently installed a 1330cc engine in my Arkley, well mostly all seems well, except that I do sometimes have difficulty starting the engine, particularly if it is warm or hot. But more seriously I get a big puff of blue smoke if the car starts from cold, after about 2 minutes of running. Once the puff has subsided, the engine is AOK and provides lots of... MORE

Hi Chaps, Where have you been.............I hear you all cry.............no!............oh well..........LOL Can you guys help me out again, please? You will remember that recently I installed a fast road 1330cc engine in the Arkley.......well mostly all is well, except now it seems a little reluctant to start, particularly if it is warm, or hot, and when it does start from cold I usually get a big puff of blue smoke. Once it has "coughed" all is ok and runs like a dream, with bags of power and acceleration. Question, Why the blue smoke and can I do anything about... MORE

Sorry for this long and annoying post, but I need some real basic help with my 1275 '68 Sprite. Here goes: First, I recently replaced the original coil with a Bosch blue coil, due to some start-up problems. I also replaced the plugs, and the distributor cap and ignition wires. Now it starts up great, but the idle speed is super-high, and seems to get higher and higher as long as I leave it running, and also, the engine gets super-hot very quickly. As far as I can tell, the choke is not stuck, and I can't get it... MORE

Chris, Can you differentiate between a LOW brake pedal and a SOFT brake pedal or do you have both? They are two very different problems and require different answers. Do not want to sound alarmist but was one of the brake fluid colours red (mineral based) and the other straw yellow (glycol based)? If so - please flush the system yet again and replace ALL seals BEFORE further use, (including clutch if a common master cylinder reservoir) you will probably find that they have gone soft and have started swelling. If they have, they can (will) cause brake failure.... MORE

Hello, Arnold- Unless I miss my guess, you about already have the "right" needle, if you got the HIF44 off a turbo Metro. Wouldn't happen to be a "BDD", would it? I know this because I am going the same way on my application as well and so is Mike MacLean (maybe, in his case, he's considering a 1275 with 5 speed now, not sure about the blower part) and have been doing the necessary research to get "basic" profiles sorted. Thanx to Mike MacLean, acquired fabricated manifold to place between HIF44 and Judson intake manifold. When I found... MORE

What? There are people "out there" who do not know what a rotary engine is? Blasphemy!! :) Cap'n. Bob '61 :{) PilotRob@... 4557... MORE

Good day, all, My car still has a really soft brake pedal. On advise from the list,I have flushed out all the dot5-and replaced it with dot4. That was done using one of those clever pressure bleed thingys-also the fluid is a different colour-so I know the "old" has been replaced with the new. My car does not have any adjustment at all with regard to the pedal position as far as I can see.My workshop manual shows adjustment at the brake light switch____-my switch is in the brake lines at the distribution block near the master cylinder. Other suggestions... MORE

Well I have most of the parts, still waiting the cam and the clutch. So the first thing I did was to buy a case of Guinness Drauft and have 1 or 2 pints and look at the pile of parts and hope I can remember how it all goes back to gether. Started with lapping the valves in the head. Today will start with the buttom end. Guinness not bad stuff 1st time I had any. More later Doug77 dougp@... 4512... MORE

Cap'n. Bob '61 :{) Could be many things I ain=92t telling. But today it=92s the engine. How much Guinness or Guinnessi well as much as it takes. I need to get this back together quickly because if its takes longer than 2 weeks since I took it apart I will have forgotten. I have CRS syndrome. It happens as one advances in age. Yes, Jim- You are missing something; your head! Now don't get mad, I'm just kidding you, OK?! I mean the opportunity was there so I just hadda do it! No offense. Downflows have fitting for thermo. plug in radiator, crossflows use thermo fitting in head (forward right side). Thermo. probe from your gauge may not match both ports in either case, so you may be in for a new gauge, should this be the case, in your case. I have a downflow in my Bugeye but prefer the fitting in the head as believe this to be more accurate... MORE

William- If it runs as nicely as it looks, it's worth it. I am into 1275 powered but damn, this is one nice looking Bugeye ('cept for the rusty tail pipe and part white/and blackwall "look" but this stuff is pretty minor!) Nice lookin' car. Hey, Bob- Your Dad lived in "interesting" times, aviation-wise, eh! Grew up with Charles Lindberg; cool! I am into WW1 aircraft in a big way, so am familiar with the Jenny. Visited Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome just up the road in upstate New York last month. Spads, Camels, Fokkers, etc., all beautifully kept and restored and all still flying, some with original engines (like "rotary"). They've got an original Jenny as well, with the original OX-5 engine. Great real WW1 "sounds" along with the smell of castor oil; pilot heaven!! I think the Watkins Aircaft Co. was probably one of... MORE

Laura, Chris, Peter, David, and all listers, Thank you very much for your information! My reply took some longer as I was abroad for work. I have just booked my crossing and found the Camping and Caravenning site in Chertsey Laura referred to. I'll call them tomorrow for a reservation. Anybody else planning to camp there ? Might be fun on Saturday already. I'll try to dress up my (boss's) car as a Midget, maybe I'll be allowed on the circuit, you never know (spirit of MR2 should be OK, not?). 1.WALKING I checked some maps (thanks again for... MORE

Gee, CB, that's all! :) Well, I'm sorry, but that simply doesn't qualify as enough, but I certainly know who to call when I have a question on flying! A "Jug"! Man, what is that like!? Paddle prop, I suppose? About 80GPH in economy (autolean) cruise and maybe 200GPH when you've got it opened up? Speaking of which, what sort of avgas are you using and how much MP can you pull on takeoff, accordingly. Guess the "purple"(?) stuff is no longer available? Accelerate to about 180 before you climb after liftoff? I'm recalling all this from a book... MORE

One of my competition engines is a +0.020" full race engine (~310 degrees duration ~0.5" lift, 1.5 rockers etc). I had done 2 meetings since the last stripdown where bearings and rings were done, head and crank were crack tested etc. I had used this engine in my bugeye in the races and rallies before the rebuild. After the rebuild it was in the Midget. I took the car to the Australian National Sprite challenge, held in Mallala in Sth Australia. At that meeting (3 days over Easter), we had two days at the track, one day in a... MORE

=== Ed, no, never have. I have had a cheaply made timing chain without maser link come apart, though. I did say, "other things being equal" to indicate that a high quality chain is best, with or without master links. A bad chain is bad without or with master links. Mike- Very informative, objective testimony; there is no doubt in my mind synthetics such as Mobile 1, Oil Extreme and others. allow the engine to produce superior torque and hp while providing superior protection. "Roger" Outcast message of "controlled contact" in rebuilds of "old" style engines (as in Series A units and the like). Am about to run in newly "rebuilt" Rivergate 1293 "tailored" for Judson blower. Initial 3,000 miles will be normally aspirated. Breaking in newly rebuilt Datsun 5-speed concurrently. Less "slippery" is best initially (first 500 to 1,000). Then more "slippery" for next 2,000 and finally, Oil Extreme synthetic at 3,000. Oil and filter changes at 500, 1K, 2k and 3k. Gentle driving for first 1K, progressing to "normal" after that, with a few short, heavy foot accelerations thrown in for... MORE
