Joe, First things first, sorrow and sympthathy from over here in relation to what happened to America - and the rest of the World because of it. I only hope that the Politicians wake up to what they have already done and stop it happening again. All Human life is precious and we only have it the one time around. If "I HOPE HE KICKS ASS" is the answer, then you will find my heart alongside yours at the start of the queue. My prayers are with you. RUNNING IN OIL IMHO you must consider the purpose of running... Peter C. So what you are saying is that it is OK to use the chain. I would much rather have a non-master link chain. I know motorcycle chains have a maste r link if it comes apart you just don=92t move if the timing chain comes apar t nasty things happen. I guess I will go ahead and use the new chain. David C. You got me curious so I went out and looked at who and where the chain was made. Surprise surprise it is an AE Engine Parts Worldwide made in West Yorkshire England must be... MORE

I need some advise again. I just received my truck load of engine parts for the rebuild. I looked at the timing chain and it has a split link to adjust the chain for varions cars. My old chain does not have this. Is this the way the chains come now. I am a little apprehensive about putting something in there that can come apart. Can one purchase a solid chain these days. David, With all due respect, split link (or master link) chains have been around for a long long time. They are quite as secure as those without, other things being equal. Some cars use them as a means of installing them without dismembering the entire engine, several cam sprockets, oil pump sprockets, etc. Makes it so the job can be done from above. ALA Mercedes, BMW, Toyota, to name a few. Peter C dougp@... writes: "Peter C." 4374... MORE

I've got no compression tester so can't do a compression test. I might try and borrow one from somewhere - or failing that I've got a birthday coming up if anyone feels like buying me one...?? (LOL) ST "Stuart Toller" 4354... MORE

I was going through my pile of parts last night and found a original set of Sprite MK1 & II cam bearings. BMC P/N 28G133 I think. I have no use for them having a MG 1500. If anybody would like them let me know and I will mail them to you. Doug 77 dougp@... 4348... MORE

Chris, I echo your comments on the terrorist tragedy. did you replace the drums? That, and careful adjustment of the rear brakes (turn the adjuster until the brakes lock reasonably firm; unwind, rewind till they just start to drag, back off one flat). Did you adjust the pedal /pushrod adjusters? You use these to adjust pedal height and "slop" until engagement. Mike "Mike & Kerry Gigante" 4323... MORE

G'day, This seems so small after the New York lunacy, but it is hoped that something to divert our minds may be a good thing,' Does anyone have any hints on how to improve brake pedal firmness. All the brakes on my mk4 sprite have been replaced with new ( or fully recond.) The master cylinder has a new kit in it(after reaming out-the kit is suited to the cylinder) The back brake cylinders are both brand new. The front calipers have been serviced with all new kits etc. The brake lines are all new. The flexible brake pipes... MORE

Run-in oil is usualy a bit thinner than regular oil, and is used after an engine re-build to remove any residues of what-ever may be left in the engine. Usually bits of swarf and/or anything else that may have found it's way into the works. After about 500 miles, drain off this oil, replace the oil filter, and start using your regular oil. Do you have misab plates between the manifold and the carb? 45 DCOE's need a slight amount of movement to prevent fuel froth so shouldn't be bolted direct to the manifold? Misab plates are rubber rings mounted on ally plates which seal the carb but allow a bit of 'wiggle'. James "James Bilsland" 4300... MORE

OK folks, Dumb question time again. What is run-in oil? I am about ready to fill the crankcase up again after installing my handy dandy rear main seal leak stopper upper (Hope it works). I would normally put a good 20W50 oil into my leaky lady but now I hear that after a major overhaul it is best to use a run in oil. Please advise... Cheers, Joe Shaw UpState NY "Joe Shaw" 4284... I have just overhauled the clutch hydraulics and, like so many before me, have been having trouble bleeding the system. It seems to me that the fluid is not being drawn down from the master cylinder to be pumped through the line (and thereby displace the air). I can get some air out initially but then no more air or fluid, and the level hasn't dropped in the reservoir. The flex hose and slave are new, master cylinder is almost new. All blown through, so there is no blockage anywhere. Can anyone suggest what I might be doing wrong?... MORE

Here also, Xmas pressie off the father in law (well, soon to be) - easibleed, timing light and compression tester. Peter C. Thanks. I have a roller release bearing already. But I think I will change everything anyway. The clutch plate is a little thin and just before I broke the motor I had a little shudder taking off quickly in 1st gear. Doug 77 "Doug Pletcher" 4270... MORE

A newly re-built engine may well be noisy until it is run in. Are the valve clearances OK? I assume your friend changed the bearings. Did he use the right sizes (the crank may have already been ground). "Jeremy Cogman" 4278... MORE

My gf and I took the Sprite to Le Mans this year, we were out of the country for 8 days so had quite a lot of clothes with us and food and cooking equipment (eating veggie in France can get a bit dull). Just a few helpful hints You'd be surprised by how much you can get in the centre of the spare, I git my two tool rolls some sockets and a stubby ratchet and a... MORE

My problem is that I have just had my engine re-conditioned by a friend who is not a mechanic but still good with engines. He re-conditioned his own engine in his Austin A30 a couple of years back, and it still sounds like a sewing machine. The problem being, my engine still sounds like an old one. I have had renewed just about every part of the engine. I need someone to listen to it, and then maybe pinpoint what could be causing it to still be noisy. Hi Bob, ditto with fitting it when it's warm - makes loads of difference. Also buy a dot tool for fitting the press fit fittings (think they're called dot caps). I've tried all kinds of improvisations using a centre punch and a vice etc. but if you want your top to be really taught you should use the proper tool to take the stress on the fittings. Ron Hopkinsons in Derby (part of Moss nowadays) always have them in stock for about ?5.00 . Not sure how your top fits the bar you mention but if it needs glue... MORE
