Gasoline is a BIG NO-NO!!!!! Some times it works best but I only use perhaps a half a cup in a pan and take it way out in the yard and use it. Dump it on the weeds when finished, makes good weed killer then wash hands and parts with water and soap or simple green. I am sure everyone knows this but perhaps someone forgot, when using gasoline in any open container, remember that gas fumes are heavier than air and fall from the bench to the floor and then along the floor until they hit the pilot... Advice appreciated lots of power understeer suspension lowered 1"1/2 standard rear springs 400lbs fronts 3/4 roll bar tyres 185/60 on 6" rims. I now have my 1500 engine disassembled, any suggestions on a good degreaser to clean it before I paint it? Steve Quandt "Steve Quandt" 21471... MORE

Do you have a rad already? If so and bearing it mind the 1500's marginal cooling it may be worth getting it recored with a modern high efficiency core rather than fitting an OE rad of dubious provenance. jeremy.cogman@... 21455... MORE

hi, can you use synthetic oil (millers crx competition 70/90 oil) in a 1973 mk3 midget 1275 gearbox, it seems to work extremely well in other vehicles. thanks Rob "Robert" 21436... MORE

Have a question for you folks. How much is too much crankcase positive pressure. It seems that at idle the engine blows quite a bit of air out the valve cover tube. I also have some coming out the vent I made in the old fuel pump location. When you increase the speed there seems to be less air. Another problem is the catch tank for the block vent had a lot of oil in it. The compression is 170, 180, 180, 180. If the compression is good where is the pressure coming from. Is it possible that i... MORE

Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) This is a new motor with about 4 k on it. It just started doing this. BTW I pulled the dipstick and at idle oil spits out the hole. I get very little air out the breather in the side of the block but what seems to be a lot out the valve cover. This thing was running great and still is but I think oil is coming out the dipstick hole when I drive it. I think I may have to pull the head and take a look maybe a ring broke. Doug 77... MORE

Doug... Sometimes (a lot of the time!) good compression numbers go along with a good deal of "blowby", most especially with engines in "good" condition, albeit with many miles upon the rings/bores. This is usually accompanied by oil leaks to some extent, more or less. The used 1098 which came with my BE was one such engine. It had good "numbers" and went very well but at a stop, there was no doubt there was blowby considering what was emitted from the draught tube off the lifter cover in terms of "smoking". Especially with the heater blower on, you... MORE

Same plug in all cylinders? Distributor cap in tip top condition? jeremy.cogman@... 21418... MORE

Bob.... Having a PCV system on the engine to provide for evacuation of crankcase vapors/pressures is basically a good thing, especially in the A Series which has no "real" rear main oil seal. By the same token, today's octanes are not the quality of those of yesterday's leaded gasolines. Oil vapor within the combustion process may lower the temperature of combustion but it also dilutes octanes. And while it may serve to some extent as an upper cylinder lubricant, it's also a carbon deposit producer as well. So you have your pros and cons. Many people spray their emissions... MORE

hi, im sorry to bother you on this but i cant seem to get any definative info on whether to disconnect the breather to the 1 1/4 twin carbs on my uprated uk mk3 1275 midget, i have seen the use of breathers and catch cans but these do not actually provide negative pressure to the crankcase (or do they?) as if i leave it connected it to the carbs it does doesnt it? if i do go and use a catch can, should I fit a breather to the rocker cover as well? where is the best place... Jim.... The cars, despite outward appearance, are basically the same internally, including wiring, etc. You can keep the old generator with it's mechanical tach drive though you may have to fabricate or "bend" an existing part! You can switch to the later "dark face" gauges (electric tach) & alternator if you like as well or go electric on the tach and simply replace the "face" of the later electic tach with the Bugeye "face". Just gently pull off and replace the indicator needles...they come right off and go back on with a gentle pull and push. You will most... MORE

Hi, Bill French.... Should slip right in without problems. Big question...what was the actual running condition of the engine/driveline before the car's demise and has any damage been done to same because of the accident? You'll want to change the ring and pinion or differential as well over to the later '74 3.9 diff. assuming you are currently running the original BE's 4.22, unless you plan on using the car in short-track racing!! There is a whale of a difference in torque between the motors and the lower 4.22 just isn't as suitable for the road otherwise unless you... MORE

Hi, Brad...Happy Rabbit! :) Subtract .02 from cold setting for hot setting (metal expands). Fr'instance, the stock cam calls for .012 cold. After expansion, this would equal approx. .010 hot. It is interesting to note the orignal BE owner's handbook specifies .012 hot or cold! So, this is not all that critical for the stock daily driven road car, obviously! It is also interesting to note that with the stock grind, .015 cold is the number for "competition" work. Obviously, very continuously "hot" (expansion) conditions! A little more noisey rather than more quiet is the way to go according... MORE

"Petrol Cap"Chrome Headlight Rims" No doubt the headlight trim rings are either being sourced or out being re-chromed I'd think. The fuel cap is a "period" aftermarket type and used to be available at MiniSpares (MiniMania in the US), along with their "Monza" brushed or chrome "flip open" cap. These are actually fastened to the fuel filler neck with little set screws, normally meant to be used with an "inner" lockable cap which fits "inside" the "flip open" outer cap. I have a Monza chrome type on mine. These outer caps alone are now going for (hold onto your... MORE

i was instructed by moss that a k&n filter coming off the crankcase breather pipe and blocking the breathers on the twin su's was a good idea, ive been reading david vizards book and it mentions the use of a pcv valve, is this ok to use on a road car, do you need a performance exhaust and could some one give me some detailed instructions on how to install this system, oh - is it better to have a breather filter rather than a closed circuit? thanks Rob "lelubooboo" 21330...
