I believe it may have been the Berkley. It was small enough to drive under a semi-truck. Friend of mine race one years ago. It had an Ariel Square Four motorcycle engine. You started with a pull cord under the dash. Not sure how long or short it was but it was small. Doug 77 "Doug Pletcher" 4083... MORE

Kevin, Go here http://home1.gte.net/spitlist/bmiht.htm for full info on the "Heritage" certificate available from BMIHT in UK. Supply them with all details you have (Chassis no/engine no etc) and for UK25 you get a frameable (if you must) certificate with loads of details - even including original key numbers! The box on my uprated 1275 has started to make a loud clang now & then, usually when backing off from high rpm.Sounds expensive, any ideas anyone? Steve 72 midget "Steve Cowling" 4003... MORE

Could be gearbox or differential related? Does it happen every time you back off? If not and if only under severe load (high rpm) is it the engine shifting & the carbs hitting the bonnet etc.... Just a guess... James "James Bilsland" 4006... MORE

I bought my 1972 Midget about two (2) years ago. I have actually owned three (3) Midgets, going back to about 1986. I have always let 'professionals' do brake work for me, and have never had any problem. Based on regular service, I never needed to top my brake fluid, though I believe that Castrol was always used. This time, I used a different mechanic, due to a move from So. California to Connecticut. I had my brakes serviced on the current car about 500 miles before putting it in the shop for an extended period of time (about... MORE

Well I pulled the engine today and removed the piston in question. There is no indication of ring failure or piston seperation. So I can ony surmise that the piston damage was done be pre-ignation. I will take the parts to the machine shop for his thoughts. I found metal pieces in the sump. They were non-magnetic so it must be part of the block from someplace. This engine was suppose to have been rebuilt Recently . 2 of the rod bearings showed wear down to the copper I think it is. I have not pulled the mains yet.... MORE

hello listers, I have a question. My brother has a 68 MGC GT with a spare motor. The motor in the car now has a bearing knocking on the bottom end. he thinks the second motor is in running shape. Told me he would sell the whole package to me for $2500.00 USD. Sound like a good price? If so i'm gonna jump all over it. Tad R. 74 RWA Midget Orlando, Florida "richard rivenbark" 3949... MORE

I have a '68 Sprite with the 1275 engine. It starts up great when the engine is cold, at full choke, and ready to run in a few seconds. My problem is, after the engine warms up after a 15 minute or so run, when I shut it off and try to start up again, it refuses to start until the engine cools down again. There is a heat shield in place around the carbs, but I'm wondering if it is not doing its job and fuel is vaporizing in the lines? Or should I be looking elsewhere? "Dave"... MORE

Talking about dizzys (which we weren't) is anyone clued up on electronic ignition conversions for the 1275? Is it true that the Maestro bits can be used (Anyone have details). Stuart I believe that you can use the Maestro ignition/dizzy As I understand it, it is basically the same ignition as I use on my race car (Lucas Rita 'Hall effect') which is an old F3 set up (before they went fully mapped etc...) You will need the dizzy, ignition 'box' and the correct coil. You will also have to modify the advance curve for your engine. The dizzy drive may be different but this can be modified or you can probably build the ignition into the correct Lucas 43/45 dizzy for your car... Where are you based in... MORE

18 degrees at idle! Whoa, Whoa. I thought he was talking 18 degrees 'dynamic' set at whatever rpm the 1500 calls for, which I figured would be on emmision engine about 1500 rpm+? Hi Margaret and all, Style may be a little as per Beat... But the MGF uses Metro suspension, steering, subframe(s?), engine, 'box (and prob. many other bits). (incidently I think the gearbox is a Peugot item!) The front hubs even come with a kind of 'dummy' outer CV joint for where the driveshaft would be in the Metro. Also thought the MGF design was more recent than the (doomed) BL/Honda partnership? Many Japanese manufacturers produce that class of sub-660cc-odd cars but don't export them, don't they? I can only think of the Suzuki Cappuccino that was also available, until... MORE

Hi Again All, Forgot the bit about ignition in the last post! Did US spec 1500s come with factory fitted electronic ignition!?! We just got clockwork only over in UK I believe? Hi All, 1493cc innit? There are a surprisingly high number of VERY low mileage 1979 Midgets in the UK, as I think people bought one to tuck away safe when it was realised Midget production was coming to an end. Most of them seem to be black (colour of last batch of 250 made or something?) I seem to remember advertised prices of 8000 Sterling (12k Dollars?) - doesn't mean they actually sold at that of course! Even if that 1500 is 117k miles and has been resprayed 3 times, if it looks good (perfect?) now and runs well... MORE

Not sure until I complete disassemble and show him the parts. Timing will do it, not the correct octane gas. I was running about 18 deg advance with not vacuum adv. Do think that would cause it.
