Don, i just replaced my 1/4 eliptic springs last week. I used the "rally" springs because the other original springs were unavailable. I am quite pleased with the ride they deliver now. They seem stronger than the old springs, but, I figure the old ones were so worn that there HAD to be a noticeable difference. I am now in the process of puting gas tube shocks back there to replace the armstrongs. That should make it even nicer. One thing I did notice is that now my car sits about 2" taller in the rear. David, I have put an Ital engine in my Mk IV sprite, but I also put in the gearbox with a Spitfire overdrive gearbox. Doing it this way means you have to change the front plate with the engine mounts and cut away some of the bodywork in the tunnel area to get the clutch housing and bigger g'box to fit. If you stay with the standard g'box, you still need to change the front plate and also the rear plate, flywheel etc. The distributor drive is different and the oil filter is in a different place but these... Although our Right Hand Drive Spridgets have the pedals on the right (as God intended) our Hand/Parking brake is still in the same place. Israel Find the brake master cylinder, follow the pipe until it comes to a four way junction (i.e. splits three ways, one to each front wheel and one to the back axle) and sitting on top of that junction you will find a small round pressure switch screwed in to the top. it has two wires leading from it, or should have, and is the brake light switch, operated by fluid pressure. A guy I work with asked me a question the other day that I couldn't answer. I'm sure this group can. I know that cars in the UK had right hand drive so that you shifted with the left hand but are the pedals reversed as well? That is, is the gas nearest the transmission tunnel and the clutch nearest the door, like left hand drive cars? I've just purchased a '75 Midget which has a 1296cc spitfire block from '69 or '70 installed which I discovered from the # stamped on the block. All of the history on who did this "rebuild" and exactly what they did is unknown. Can someone help explain parts compatibility on LBC'S for me? Does this 1296cc spitfire block accept the head, intake manifold, exhaust manifold, clutch, tranny, etc, etc, etc... of the 1500cc that originally came with the car? I'm new to LBC's and am trying to figure out how much 1500cc stuff is still in the engine bay... MORE


I had the same problem in a MK I sprite. Dropped the tank twice to find that the metal pipe inside the tank appears to be steel and does not turn. That pipe is probally not the problem. It only goes from the side of the tank (inside) to a filter at the bottom of the tank. The bent pipe you are talking about goes from the carbs to the tank unless it has been cut. The Abarth we're talking about was sized for the 1.25" 948cc exhaust system, though it can be used with the later 1.5" system used on the longer stroke 1098 (not a "revver" to the extent of it's shorter stroke smaller and larger brothers). Of course you will need a "stepped" pipe to do this properly. The Abarth, being a straight through glass-pack type muffler will cause no loss of power with the 1098 engine (BTDT) in normal street driving. Abarths for various cars (MG "A". Jon- The inside pipe IS a metal of some sort but it is not directly connected (per Don May's post) to the outside pipe. Also, all fuel tanks are not the same. Some come with a little filter screen at the internal pick-up and some don't, etc. I am afraid you are going to have to remove the tank (not a big deal, really, just a PITA!), remove the sender and get in there and find out what's going on to get this situation "straightened out". Does anyone know what the fuel pipe in the tank of a MKIV Sprite is made of? The metal pipe that sticks out of the side of the fuel tank is a bent one and I can't work out which way it should be facing so that the pipe in the tank is touching the bottom, I have tried listening for it to hit the bottom but no joy. Ah, yes Bob. You do recall correctly. He might disconnect the external pipe from the tank. That will loosen the inside pipe end to rotate inside the connection hole. May be possible to use a clean stick to insert into the connection fitting then push on the end of the inside pipe, apply pressure, and twist it into the proper angle. Otherwise about the only way to see the inside pipe end is to drop the tank, remove the fuel gage float unit and use the float opening hole to view and possibly use a screw driver or long... MORE


John, The chassis includes two doors, both fenders, the valance and the hood. The trans tunnel has been cut but the piece is still with the car. If you come after it and leave me the axles and diff, you can take the rest. Jon- From what I recall, the "inside" and "outside" fuel tank pipes are not directly connected (where is Gerard or Frank when I really need them.....where??!!:), though I hope I recall incorrectly!! After having to fit 4 new exhausts to my Mk3 Midget in 5 years because of speed bumps where I lived, I cured the problem by having the fixing clips turned sideways. I now always insist on it when having a new exhaust fitted or if the clips need replacing. My garage hates me for it! It is easier for them to fit the clips so that they hang down, but sideways gives a little extra clearance over speed bumps, as well as un-even road surfaces. Guys- Speed bumps are going up all over Stamford, CT. these days, most especially on roads in quite residential areas and most especially in these areas wherein it can be expected kids will be playing. Fact is, today's cars are driven at higher speeds through the same areas wherein yesterday's cars were driven at a slower pace owing to their inability to handle and stop as well as today's better sprung, better handling vehicles. Could be something as simple as the exhaust pipe hitting the body pan.....as the pipe hangs down below it. If you have been following the "SPEED BUMP" string, this is one of the most frequent causes of "BENT PIPES"....worth checking anyhoo. David A. Some states (I know NOT which ones) mandate the maximum height for these types of exhaust system removers. Saw the speed bump, slowed down to a crawl, drove the front wheels over it and listened as the bottom of my MK1 whammed down against the top of the speed bump. Ahead was another one. I was trapped between the two. Showily crept up the next one and listened as the bottom scrapped across it. Tallest dam speed bumps I have ever uncounted. Hi David, Here's a few tips for you. First of all, you don't need to dump your DGV and get another for the Datsun. Just get an adapter plate from Pierce Manifolds and it will bolt right up the the Datsun manifold. It's around $30-35 if I remember correctly., so yes I have done it before. (see my Morris Traveller page) The engine (yes Allen, it is heavier than an A-series, but not sure about the 1500) is good to around 300,000 miles if it has been properly cared for, so you might not need to rebuild, but you... Hi all, I will be installing a 1275 engine in my frogeye (one day) and have been offered a cheap, new stainless exhaust. But do I want an exhaust for a frogeye (so that the fixing points are OK) or an exhaust for a later car (to match the engine)?
