My Midget (1973 I think) seems too softly sprung, however it already doesn't take much to ground the exhaust pipe. From looking at the wheel arches I would say the car should be lowered a good 2 inches and hardened up too.Any suggestions as to how I can get the most out of my little car would be gratefully received. I have a standard system on my 1275, one straight pipe from the manifold, with one straight through standard box at the back. It sounds great. Gary King (Newcastle UK) 69 Sprite MKIV "Gaz" 12675... MORE

Yep- The standard straight-through muffler is available from MiniMania (GEX #????) The stock 1098 which came in my Frog had one of these mufflers and did "sound good, like a sports car should". Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 12676... MORE

Jeremy- Stainless steel exhausts do sound "tinnier", don't they??! :) Assume it is thickness of the steel but don't really know. Nothing wrong with the Monza but one of the least expensive, best sounding exhuast systems is a 1.75 or 2.0" pipe ending in a suitably sized (smallest length) Cherry Bomb or Thrush glasspack. I don't recall which one it was, but one had forward-facing "vents" on the inside, so could be "reversed" for better flow at the expense of a little more "noise". Get yourself a Pepboys (or similiar) suitably sized chrome tip and your done! I am... MORE

Brett: You gotta be kidding me!! :) Don't sweat the small stuff, guy. We installed my new motor, "broke in" the cam and without hooking up the new headers to the old exhaust system, simply drove (at minimum rpm) the few miles to the muffler shop and did what had to be done! No problem!! :) Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 12673... MORE

I can't say what benefit a Monza system would have over a stainless one, other than making for a bigger sound. I have the Monza; my '78 Midget sounds like a big old Chevy. Fun, but I suspect it'll rust away like any other, eventually. Of course, at 3k miles/year, "eventually" could be a long time from now! Maybe a wide (2") exhaust pipe and the four-vent-tube Monza lets the engine "breathe" easier? Steve Steven Michelsen 12602... MORE

Hello Folks I have a 1971 MG Midget 1275 Right now I have a stainless steel exhaust system. I am thinking of putting on a Monza system. Would I gain anything from this or is the stainless steel the way to go? If I go with the Monza what comes with the kit? Thanks for the help Jason "Jason Gross" 12600... MORE

I have my Monza exhaust sitting in a box in my garage ready for install. One thing I have to say is that I am just a little disappointed... My first exposure to the Monza Exhaust was seeing the install instructions for that of a Spitfire.. the spitfire Monza exhaust has a pre-muffler in front, then a "Y", then two dual straight mufflers which each have double-chrome tips on them. At first, I was thinking of getting the Spitfire exhaust and putting it on my Midget, but the gas tank is in the wrong place... and there is not... MORE

Hi Geri, Very strong running stock 1275. about .010 shaved from the head, LCB header. Engine is a '69 12CD. Later I plan to install a mild race 948 w/1098 head and a Judson SC. Should be conparable or better that a 1275. Tires now are 185/60 on Panasport 5.5 inch wheels, but will maybe go to a little taller tire. I'll do the gear swap first before I decide on tire size. Gerard, You don't say what engine you have, what state of tune it is in or what speed you wish to cruise at. So for what it is worth I found that my standard 1275 with an LCB would pull 70 mph on most motorway gradients with a 3.7, which on standard tyres gives about 17.5 mph/1000 rpm, ie 4,000 at 70. Not sure where you are but here in the UK I have used the filter head and pipe with its banjo bolt from a scrap 1100 Metro ( UK breakers yards are full of them ). the complete set up costs about 5 pounds and fits on with no modifications (assuming you don't want the blocked oil filter light). The pipe is the oil return and yes it would matter a lot if it was blocked. Best of luck Dave "David Dixon" 12277... MORE

I have decided that the reason the 65 Sprite won't fire is because the dizzy gear is off a couple of teeth. I have #1 at TDC, with #4 intake starting to open and exhaust just closed. In that position, the rotor is pointing at #4 rather than #1 piston. The slot is in an almost vertical position rather than close to horizontal. I have the dizzy out, and the sleeve wont come out. I can get it to spin if I tap it with a punch, but I cant get it to come out. Is it safe to... MORE

Cap'n. Bob Not so much the person who installed but who built it. Hey haven't you heard increasing you oil pressure is enough to blow your muffler off. Just a little levity here. BTW I stayed in downtown Stamford last year sure a lot of people walking around at night. Ate at some kind if Indian place wasn't bad. Nice town Doug 77 Michigan Doug Pletcher 12196... MORE

Doug- The day your increasing oil pressure 10lbs over "normal" has an effect on your muffler system is the day I "hang it up" and hopefully, I will "hang it up" better than the guy who installed your Monza! Oh, well....out with the torch!! :) Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 12194... MORE

Cap'n. Bob Thanks for the words of support it's nice to have a little reassurance that you have not mucked something up. Just came back from a ride and the increased oil pressure did cause a problem. It caused one of my muffler brackets to disengage itself from the car. Heard some banging in the aft part of the car, stopped and there it was hanging in the breeze. Did not have any bailing wire with me but did have some 16 gauge stranded that was not in use at the time. Worked good enough to get me home.... MORE

Jeremy Lots of ghost stories about slave problems. I was trying to figure out how the slave could be leaking. Overthrow is one idea! However the final problem was traced to a split pipe which was running down the inside of the pipe to the slave and collecting on the bottom of the slave LOOKING like it WAS the slave !! It wasn't so I had a new pipe made up, cleaned everything and bleed the system which was a nightmare. As you say the nipple is so tight up against the chassis so I had the starter out,... MORE

Geri- Thanx for filling me in on the rootes-type blower you are using, Geri. I am using 1.5 rollers with a Cooper S cam in my "new" Rivergate engine. What problems have you been hearing about with this arrangement? I experience none. A flowed head, say with 1.4+ intakes and 1.215 or so exhausts sounds like a plan, Geri. Should make quite a difference. MiniMania also has the aluminum variety with 1.4 intakes but stock size exhaust valves. I am happy with mine. The alum. head IS flowed in that it's ports and comb. chambers have been resdesigned so... MORE

Bob, Magnuson produce the so called 'Magnacharger'. They are a US firm (were in Santa Ana, Ca) and this blower is a gear synchronised lobe (or roots) type unit, employing 3 lobes on each rotor. They produced a range of sizes that will suit most size of engine from bikes to small block V8s. His main interest seems to have been bikes which is why they are particularly good for our small motors. Magnachargers were made in 40, 60, 80 and 110 cu in versions of which I have an MC 80 ie the 80 cu in version. These... MORE

Brandon, I don't understand how the bypass allows flow through the heater core if the valve is not leaking. The bypass should only allow flow through the intake manifold. Unless the valve is leaking there should be no flow through the heater. As David said, I am one of those that replace the valve with a generic from the autoparts store. You can send me pictures if you want ( wolfbj@... ). I will see if it is the same as my setup. Brent "Brent Wolf" 11929... MORE

thanks gerard. flex line is in hand. but am trying to end up close to concours. the issue is the brass end cap. i can fabricate the little brass fitting on the end of the tube. can't make the brass cap. threads are weird. i believe BPT , brit pipe thread. as opposed to SAE or UNI or Army/Navy. i'll reach out to the UK list as well. ken "pblock4x4" 11826... Putting a Midget 1500 'box into a 1275 can be done but it is not a simple task and I would not recommend it just for synchro on 1st gear. However I have just undertaken a similar swap on my 1275 Sprite. But I have used a Triumph sourced overdrive gearbox to give me 7 useful ratios as well as synchro on 1st. Another reason for going the o/d route rather than 5th gear is I wanted to keep the car in period and produce something the factory should have developed if they had not have been starved of... It shouldn't be difficult. The electrics are fairly simple. That said I've got a mk2 and I can access the rear lights through the boot. You may spend quite alot of time on your back across the transmission tunnel doing the dash electrics unless you take the dash out, "Jeremy Cogman" 11703... MORE
