Whoa, whoa, Doug! Not so fast kimosabe!! For you are correct, though it is all a question of extent!! If you haven't got "the problem", don't try to "fix it". If your set-up came with manifold heating, then it was jetted accordingly to take this into account. This having been said, if it runs just as well (smoothly and economically) without, leave it off. Power should be "up" with the colder, more dense air, as you point out. However, the "designers" have usually taken the temperature "drop" within the manifold (as the throttle is opened) into account in their... MORE

Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) The manifold that came with my Weber has fittings for water heating the manifold. I had it connected but decided to try it with heating removed. Does not seem to effect the performance no flat spots. Thought it would be better not to heat the manifold but reading your post I think I will connect it back up and see if it improves performance. Was thinking that the colder the air into the carb the better (more dense mixture) so than why heat the manifold. That is why I took it off. Your advise seems... MORE

Hi, David- Unfortunately, I believe the water choke and a "hot spot" in the manifold in the plenum area just beneath the carb. are two different things. Having no personal experience with this set-up (which lies solely with the 45DCOE and DFEV as applied to VW Bugs) I will wait to hear differently on this from another (lister) who knows differently in this respect. I never understood how a carb. set-up designed to produce excellent economy (single small barrel to promote excellent low rpm flow in light throttle operations) with decent WOT (or nearly so) performance was going to... Chris Generally a pop or backfire in the exhaust is caused by a hole in the pipe letting oxygen in and therefore combusting any unburned fuel. Check the tightness of the joints on your new exhaust system. Not a huge concern and normal when doing deceleration downshifts.(where vacuum causes oxygen to be sucked into the tail pipe.) You may also be running just a bit rich. The dashpot cover should be oriented as you describe. If I wasn't required to keep the 150CD Zenith by SCCA rules I'd have a DGV on it a heartbeat. As it is I'm... MORE

After the last interest in finding books on the list, I just read about a book that is out of print but some of the list might be interested in looking for a copy in used book stores. The title is: "Manifold Destiny". written by Chris Maynard. It is considered the bible of car engine cooking. Many recipes that use engine, manifold and radiator heat to prepare a many course meal during a long trip so when you stop, the meal is ready to eat. My dad used to wire a frozen polish sausage onto the exhaust manifold of... MORE

Chuck if you are going to NJ, from Va. The easiest way is to follow 95 signs, east around DC. pick up 95 again on the north side of DC, then just stay on it. At Baltimore, you will go through the tunnel, but just keep following Rt. 95 N signs. When you come out on the other side you are going to just keep going N. No more tunels or changes in the signs. You follow to the NJ turnpike across the Del. Mem. Bridge. ANd onto the Turnpike. Mark MarkAlanB@... 10311... MORE

Grant Bowyer: Thank you for the informative New Zealand MG website, The handling and carb stuff was excellent "recurrent" training for stuff I pretty much already "knew". However: The information on extractor exhausts and WHY the LCB works so much better than the short 3 into 1's (for the "road") I found extremely informative and interesting; "knew" this but didn't know exactly "why". Every one talks about the "negative sound wave" but no one has ever explained it to the extent Paul Walbran does. ("Ahhh.....so that's what's happening with the exhaust pulses {or, is that pulsi}.....Ah, hah!) Very cool!... MORE

Ok, Paul, here goes! As your's is a street machine, get new bushings to begin with, of course. Poly and Nylatron will both work and they will stiffen things up but, the ride will become much harsher with these and the poly will squeak and grind in time, no matter what grease you initially use; eventually, the lubrication will "go" (BTDT). Now, if you can live with these sounds, fine. I could not and went back to stock rubber. Handling in all respects didn't suffer much, but ride was much better and it bought the "peace and quiet" back!... MORE

Nope. No harm done. At best, you'll fill up the carberator float bowls and the fuel pump should stop running at that point. If it doesn't stop running after a few seconds with the engine off, look for leaks from the carbs. On the earlier cars, the carbs are located directly above the exhaust manifold and any fuel leaks drop onto a hot pipe causing less than desirable results. I'm not sure of the configuration on the 1500 engine. Curt "Curtis Carlson" 9960... MORE

"Saved" by Mr. Archibald! Correctomundo, Paul! The book is called: "How To Keep Your Volkswagon Alive - A Manual of Step by Step Procedures for the Compleat Idiot" by the infamous John Muir, a hippy-zen type of guy who obviously know his business, VW-wise. And how do I know this, Paul (you might well ask?) Because the back-up vehicle to my Vizard-tuned 1311 RWA '74 Spridget (which did the 5,000rpm sustained run between Stamford & Bridgeport, CT up Rt. 95...flawlessly, I might add!) was a (GEX 1600 powered) '67 VW Beetle. CAR IS 1971 MG Midget 1275cc Hello Folks Well I just back on to see the list today and thank you all for the advice. But now I have a big problem Yesterday I got the oil changed and new filter, I also toped off the gear box with some new oil and everything was good. Today I go out to take a ride and it has a hard time starting, but she got going I roll down my drive way and then go to take of and nothing. The motor was going the tech was going but I... MORE

Matt, Then apparently, you don't bother to read all the list messages. See archives message 8061, also appended with your name in the subject header. I sent you explicit instruction on what to do. If you feel left out...? Gerard "gerardchateau" 9477... MORE

HEY BRETT! It seems you may not be getting your emails so i hope you see this.Im still in limbo on the headers i sent money order for from your ebay auction. Its been 2 weeks and no word. Mike, Thanx for the reply, I didn't know you Yanks raced midgets, I thought you just polished and talked about them. :o) :o) I thought that I had replied to you, but can't find a copy in my sent item file. At the moment I've got two 1275 engines on the bench in my garage. Both reputedly to be good. But want to try them out before fitting one of them into the car. I've not seen or heard either of them running , an they've both been standing , out a the car for several years. The engine... MORE

Yeah call me crazy. The Midget should be running in about a month. The Mini PU awaits a lot of floor panel welding but should see progress once the Midget gets its Kent cam, Kenlowe, Alden Yellow, Datsun 5speed, and a set of progressive valve springs I got in the UK ten years ago. Ah, yes, Margaret and Bree! The ever popular air pollution control supplement for those of you so inclined or worse yet, by law, thus obligated. With the exception of the PCV system for crankcase vapor recirculation by intake manifold, utter "trash" and not inexpensive to keep up (I am told....having no personal experience in such matters, of course!) As noted in earlier email, Chuck ground off the spots on the header that didn't belong there, enlarged the two holes so they would fit, problem, maybe.... The intake manifold fits snuggly up against the side of the head, the header doesn't. I realize that the header may have had a higher flange around the outlet holes, but I don't know if I did something (else) wrong, or that is the way that they should fit. Again Thank You to Chuck, what a wonderful guy, a great garage and yard, very nice son and some interesting sets of wheels... MORE

A Big THANK YOU to Chuck for taking the time to respond to my email, give directions to his house and spend the time grinding down the high spots on the headers!
