If anyone's interested, I've put mine inside the pipe from the thermostat housing to the top of the rad 'cause I haven't got a hole in my head for it. It doesn't show anything until the thermostat opens which is a bit of a pain but short of removing the head, drilling and tapping a hole I don't know what else to do... Hello, Arnold- Unless I miss my guess, you about already have the "right" needle, if you got the HIF44 off a turbo Metro. Wouldn't happen to be a "BDD", would it? I know this because I am going the same way on my application as well and so is Mike MacLean (maybe, in his case, he's considering a 1275 with 5 speed now, not sure about the blower part) and have been doing the necessary research to get "basic" profiles sorted. Thanx to Mike MacLean, acquired fabricated manifold to place between HIF44 and Judson intake manifold. When I found... MORE

William- If it runs as nicely as it looks, it's worth it. I am into 1275 powered but damn, this is one nice looking Bugeye ('cept for the rusty tail pipe and part white/and blackwall "look" but this stuff is pretty minor!) Nice lookin' car. Never get tired of looking at these cheerful little beasts! Cap'n. Bob '61 :{) PilotRob@... 4494... MORE

Your setup sounds very similar to mine. Weber downdraft with associated manifold. However, I have no smoke. The difference, I was told not to attach the PCV to the manifold vacuum - Way to much vacuum - sucks oil. I was told to just attached it to intake downstream of filter. In fact much carb had punchout in filter plate for attachment of PCV. This results in very slight negative pressure applied to valve cover, result no leaks, no oil burning. G'day, This seems so small after the New York lunacy, but it is hoped that something to divert our minds may be a good thing,' Does anyone have any hints on how to improve brake pedal firmness. All the brakes on my mk4 sprite have been replaced with new ( or fully recond.) The master cylinder has a new kit in it(after reaming out-the kit is suited to the cylinder) The back brake cylinders are both brand new. The front calipers have been serviced with all new kits etc. The brake lines are all new. The flexible brake pipes... MORE

That's what I'm thinking.... You should be able to move the carb up and down a small amount - although don't loosen it too much... Do you have thackery washers or rubber cups on the manifold bolts (thackery washers are like mini 'springs' which provide tension on the carb but allow sligt movement - rubber cups are for a similar purpose) If you just have plain washers then the carb won't be able to move... Jmaes "James Bilsland" 4302... MORE

Do you have misab plates between the manifold and the carb? 45 DCOE's need a slight amount of movement to prevent fuel froth so shouldn't be bolted direct to the manifold? Misab plates are rubber rings mounted on ally plates which seal the carb but allow a bit of 'wiggle'. James "James Bilsland" 4300... MORE

Hi Bob, ditto with fitting it when it's warm - makes loads of difference. Also buy a dot tool for fitting the press fit fittings (think they're called dot caps). I've tried all kinds of improvisations using a centre punch and a vice etc. but if you want your top to be really taught you should use the proper tool to take the stress on the fittings. Ron Hopkinsons in Derby (part of Moss nowadays) always have them in stock for about ?5.00 . Not sure how your top fits the bar you mention but if it needs glue... MORE

I bought my 1972 Midget about two (2) years ago. I have actually owned three (3) Midgets, going back to about 1986. I have always let 'professionals' do brake work for me, and have never had any problem. Based on regular service, I never needed to top my brake fluid, though I believe that Castrol was always used. This time, I used a different mechanic, due to a move from So. California to Connecticut. I had my brakes serviced on the current car about 500 miles before putting it in the shop for an extended period of time (about... MORE

Group, IMHO you should NOT mix DOT 4 (glycol base) with DOT 5 (silicon base) The result will be, as mentioned a softening and swelling of the rubber seals. If you wish to change to DOT 5 from DOT 3 or 4 flush the system through with DOT 5 and use new seals throughout (A good time to do this is when replacing rusted brake pipes. Ideally, replace ALL brake lines including the flexibles.) There are questions as to the use of DOT 5, some people complaining that the brake pistons will not return fully to their 'old' unpressurised... MORE

This was exactly the same problem I had but mine was in a newly rebuilt engine so I don't think that sludge build-up could be the cause unless FM Sportscars did a bad job which I 've no reason to believe they did.See following re my solution. On a different note I need some bodywork repairs doing and as I don't have the use of a garage I am looking for a reliable trustworthy bodyshop in the Northwest,I live in Wigan so if there is anyone out there with experience of rebuilders in the Wigan,Bolton,Preston and surrounding area please... I have owned a 1967 1275cc sprite for the last 12 months during which time i have been trying to prevent a most unsociable habit my car has when it gets warm at approximatly 1.5 miles down the road it deposits a cloud of smoke on anyone that is following for approximatly a 500yard stretch then clears, i can stop and return within an hour or so and no smoke, leave her standing while at work or over night and she disgraces herself again. performance prior to smoke and after good. Hi chaps, yes been away for a long time I know, been working on a new database and have been thoroughly absorbed, and shattered!! Anyway, as you know I have my new engine fitted and running, and all, well mostly, seems ok............however. If I start then engine in the morning and leave it running on the choke for some time the exhaust emits a rather large cloud of blue smoke. Is this normal, is it as a result of the engine not have been fully run in, or is it an indication of another problem all together? As usual... MORE

No expert on engine breathing stuff so any advice welcome. Here's what I've got: Timing cover breather vented to the air because I've got an alloy rocker cover with no vent and a Weber carb with no vent on the manifold. My oil filler cap is vented so I assume the top end is breathing through that. ??? ST Sprite '71 "Stuart Toller" 3299... MORE

Hi list, Here're some simple questions concerning my GAN3 (MKII Midget, 1965) resto-project (remember the car is in bits and pieces, engine and gearbox are out). I think most questions are related to "some advice wanted" from experienced people: - Should I replace the spigot bush? How to determine if it's necessary? - How to see if the spring-boxes need attention? Should I open the rear bulk-head to see if the spring-boxes need attention? - How to prevend rust forming between two spot welded pannels? (for example floor to sill seams) - How to prevend rust at the edges... MORE

Hi all, Many thanks to Cpt'n Bob and all of you for the helpful replies to my misfi re problem. The coil has been replaced twice (I had guessed a crack in the coil winding could be opening up when hot). The Carbs are oversize SU's, with a special inlet manifold, and a stainless heat sheild. The fuel lines are well back from the exhaust too. My favorite is the Distributor. I will try to get this bench tested - anyon e know a place in the south (UK) that can do this for me? Thanks again. Depends on rubber engine mount condition, how the turrets are bolted to the chassis, type of dashpot cap etc etc. I got mine to fit under a standard bonnet. There are several ways to get the clearance improved by as much as an inch. Some involve cutting the engine turrets, some machining the manifold, some rebolting the turrets, polishing the tip of the dashpot cap. The list is endless, the result is very worthwhile. Thanks James I fear the worst, wasn't aware that you could buy a straight manifold ! Looks like that will be my answer. Thanks for the other stuff to, when are you racing next ? peter peter bentley 2783... MORE

Peter It largely depends on whether the manifold is straight or angled - if angled it is very likely that it will hit... You may have to put a 'power bulge' in the bonnet to clear - otherwise a change of manifold may be necessary... Don't connect the heated bit of the manifold BTW. The cooler the inlet charge is when it goes in the denser (and therefore the more power you get... You can also get detonation problems with heated manifolds). Stud size is 3/8" UNC so the drill size should be 5/16" - make sure it is... MORE

Hello everyone A little history first, In the past as I drive my 1971 Midget 1275cc I would hear a hollow tiny sound that seam to be a constant noise. With a careful examination I have found that the exhaust pipe coming off the header is very close to the frame of the car. And when the motor is on it moves enough to hit the frame. I have tried to put a wedge in there and I have tried to bent the pipe out a bit but with no success. Does any one have an idea on this... MORE
