I had my MC sleeved with brass but there seems to be a problem the pistons don't move freely. I know that the bores need to be opened up a little. How do you know when enough material has been removed? I planned on using 600 grit wrapped around a dowel with tape to make up the difference. Ken Charles! You can run heated or unheated. As David Jacobs states, the MG Metro runs heated. And as David says, you can run either way and see which way is best but, before you do..... you need to understand the effects of water manifold heating and why it exists. It is basically there for economy of operation in light load driving...like around town sort of stuff. As David says, heating the mixture allows for better vaporization of the fuel. True. This allows for a "leaner" mixture for more economical operation (better gas mileage) in part throttle, light load... MORE


I've just fitted two new leaf springs to my Frog, it now looks like a Landrover! there's a 5" gap between the top of the tyre and the wheel arch and although everthings connected correctly the poor car is listing to the right. measure inside dimensions of a window frame. They each need to be somewhere about 3/4 of the track width between the inner faces of the front wheels - give or take a few inches. Measure by holding the sticks side by side and slide them lengthways so that one end of each stick contacts the face edge of each wheel rim. As there was a thread recently regarding front end alignment, beginning with message 22461, I have posted a couple of photos of a simple apparatus that I used this week to estimate and rough-in the toe in on my Sprite this week, in case it might be useful. The apparatus comprises a 48" construction ruler, and a pair of 18" x 24" L squares. The short legs of the L squares are clamped to the opposite ends of the ruler, such that the long legs extend outwardly from the ruler and parallel to each other, such edges being separated... MORE


The IF of HIF stands for 'integral float'. It's not a seperate assembly but sits below the throttle assembly, around the jet. There is no way to adjust the float for angle so I guess it's designed to be fairly tolerant of mounting angle. Come to think of it (off the top of my head and it's a while since I've been inside mine) the end of the jet sits in the pool of fuel in the float chamber the top of which is nowehere near the top of the jet as it is in HS carbs. It could or you could fit a spacer, machined to a wedge shape. However the studs would then no longer enter the carb perpendicular to it's face. The kludgy solution to this is to enlarge the mounting holes in the carb. The correct solution is to redrill and tap (probably filling beforehand) the stud mounting holes in the manifold. After all this effort I'd have thought it would be simpler / cheaper to get a suitable manifold. Could the manifold face be machined at an angle to, in effect, rotate the carb, or does this not help move the... MORE

Ah, Bill.... This is a very light colored interior indeed...I know the one now...much lighter than autumn leaf....I hate that yellow ochre color!! Yeechh!! Thanks to all who replyed. With your help , I think the interior is Yellow Ochre. It is gold/Yellow. It is not Brown/ Aut. leaf. So the best guess is that it was Teal Blue with Yellow Ochre. Still have not found a factory listing of exterior colurs and interiors. I am tending towards, Black Tulip, Green Mallard or the '74-75 Aconite. Any one with pictures of these colors? I have a 8/75 mg midget and am having a major problem with it. The problem is that has way too much negative camber, tip in at top of tire, on the left front. I have replaced the off center bushings in the left lower a-arm, bought a shop manual from Moss and checked the measurements on the pivot points for the lower a-arms, checked the distance measurements on the left lower a-arm against the right lower a-arm, pulled and checked the left shock mount to see if it had been modified and it hasn't. Wimpy... If you can't correct the camber situation with one of Speedwell's lower adjustable kits along with an offset upper bushing to the extent of not more than an inch or so of negative camber (while "matching" the other side accordingly, BTW), then you are off to the frame straightener. Matter of fact, now that I think about, the frame straightener is where you should go with all regular stock bushings renewed. What the hell....if a job is worth doing it is worth doing right so to hell with a band-aid fix for this one. "Safe" as in proper... MORE

Need a little help. The '73 RWA Midget Mk III we got to fix up, was a dark/med blue ( repainted black) exterior with the Gold (Hazelnut/Autumn Leaf) interior. We want to keep the interior gold, Question is: What stock exterior colors were offered in 1973 with this gold interior, besides the Blue? Does anyone have any idea where I might find a roll bar for a '63 Sprite? I'm not going racing or anything like that, I'm just trying to recreate the look of a car that I had in college. I'd like to be able to put the top up if I have to.(though I haven't yet) Everything I've seen is for later models. HI Jack, I have one that I removed from my 63 MK1 which to the best of knowledge would be the same as for the 63 Sprite. Check group photos in folder "Don May" to see my 63 before I took the roll bar off. Is that what you remember yours looking like? Have no idea where you would find a new one. Well, I think I win the "I knew I probably shouldn't have done that" prize for the day. Last week I power washed the engine on my '78 1500. I proceeded to drive it for about 20 minutes, after I cleaned the engine. Everything was fine. Today I go to start it up - turn the key - nothing. No clicking, nothing. I find that the lights work, and the brights, but I cannot flash the brights. I can also hear the whine of the fuel pump. I look under the hood and check every connection - everything looks... MORE


David When I changed the rack on my 66 I did it by placing a straight edge against the front rims with spacers to clear the tyres and used a tape rule. I only used my method to make the car drivable for the 2 miles to my nearest tyre shop who checked it for me and said it was 10 mm out (I thought that was quite good, they were horrified). The tyre shop clamped my steering wheel in the correct central position and set the correct toe in of 0 to 3.1mm all for ?12 (about $20... MORE

You know how ozone affects rubber.... especially rubber as in "seals" in terms of hydraulics which need to be kept "wet" to "live". In this respect, I would expect to renew a lot of stuff right off the bat just to "be sure", most especially when it came to brakes. Yep, David... The new cars are definitely far better "runners" for sure. They run efficently on 87 unleaded PON and polute not and are much more safe than ever before BUT.....they are anything but user friendly when it comes to maintenance. They are expensive as hell to maintain when they have a problem. Simply opening up the taps at each wheel and the clutch slave with an empty beer can at each "tap" and waiting for the fluid (drip, drip, drip...slowly but surely as they drain simultaneously at the same time) in the MC to fall to almost the... I don't know how true it is, but it's reckoned that anywhere a B series will fit, you can get a Rover V8 in! It's already been done in more than one Midget. See http://www.mgcars.org.uk/midgetspriteclub/mightymidget.html for an example. Having said that, although the Rover is light in weight, it's actually quite a bulky engine for a V8 - small block Chevys and Fords are a little bit smaller. Regards David "David Jacobs" 22477... Don I feel for you. It brings back memories of when I first started welding, it's such an unnatural process, it is difficult to get to grips with, but you can do it with patience and practice.
