I have been doing my homework trying to figure out where I went wrong on my ZS carb rebuild. I have come to the conclusion that the board is right. (duh!) There is something amiss with my water choke mechanism. I read that the Vaccum kick piston is not supposed to be lubricated. Without a small ammount of lube it seems to bind in its bore. I used three-in-one oil. Could this be where I went astray? Has the light oil caused a vaccum lock or something? Anyone try this before? Thoughts or suggestions? Might a brake hone be... MORE
Jon- Tach suddenly won't work (when it worked just fine before)? Sounds like a "mis-connect" or "no connect" somewhere along the circuit. Wire on the "correct" terminal of the coil? Cap'n. Bob (Ret'd) '60 Frog PilotRob@... 16116... MORE
Rudy, The Bugeyes and cars a few years later were Positive Ground. Unless there has been some major electrical upgrades like switching over to a alternator. My '63 MkII is a positive ground car also and if I can remember correctly many years ago I had at some time switched the terminals by mistake.. I believe that the car still ran but the electrical system operated very strangely or not at all. See how your fuel gague and Tach are operating, that is if your tach is a not a cable drive one. If it's electrical it should say... MORE
I have a Zenith Stromberg mon my 78 Midget 1500. The engine was running a little rich, so I decided to rebuild it. Bad Idea! Nowit wont start without a screwdriver holding the plunger partially open. When it does choose to fire up it blows large quantities of black smoke and idles high. If you rev it up it doesn't idle down again. it will just keep revving up til it hits redline! (not that I have let that happen.) I have tried adjusting the needle depth, idle air adjustment screw, throttle bypass screw, and even put heavier oil... MORE

Moss do a kit which does indeed use Mocal bits. I've had one fitted for years with no problems. IT bolts on in front of the rad. onto those two triangular platforms under the bonnet shut panel. If you fit one it's well worth fitting an oil thermostat as well because if your oil never warms up it will get dirty quickly. An oil temperature gauge is a good idea too. Might be worth fitting this first in case you don't need the cooler. Later Spridgets had spin on oil filters so just get one of those housings. Don't... MORE
Hi to anyone out there who can help me. I have just gone through the club pages looking for some information on oil coolers, nothing. Having found this bit of the web thourght I would ask the question here. I am the owner of a MK1 Sprite and have been for several years. I have sepen a lot of time and money in bringing it up to a good condition. I have been playing around with the engine and now get a lot more BHP out of it. The thing is that now the car's engine oil is getting... MORE
Friend of mine had 14" wheels on his early Midget with home made round wheel arches. It looked like a Tonka Toy! It will affect handling as it will raise your ride height half an inch. It will also make your speedo totally inaccurate. It will also mean the car is higher geeared i.e. quicker at a given engine speed / gear but with less acceleration in each gear. I was at the flea market this morning (nasty, misting, cold and miserable) and bought a Snap-On tool, but I am not sure I really need. It is a Torqometer for measuring bolt-nut torque in inch pounds. It has a tag that has TE-12 and the serial # on the side and 8-72 stamped on the bottom, which could be the manufacture date as the box looks pretty old.The unit itself is in great shape, no major scratches and the lens over the gauge is perfectly clear and has only one or two small scratches that are visible when... David, I have put an Ital engine in my Mk IV sprite, but I also put in the gearbox with a Spitfire overdrive gearbox. Doing it this way means you have to change the front plate with the engine mounts and cut away some of the bodywork in the tunnel area to get the clutch housing and bigger g'box to fit. If you stay with the standard g'box, you still need to change the front plate and also the rear plate, flywheel etc. The distributor drive is different and the oil filter is in a different place but these... Yes, it's true, the crank, flywheel/clutch and I think the rear main bearing cap/oil return thingy (can't call it a seal cos it doesn't!) are different on transverse A series motors so it needs some serious machining to make it fit. An A Plus Marina/Ital engine will fit without too much bother though. The K series conversion is another story altogether - it's not just a case of taking one engine out and dropping the other in it's place. If you have a look at http://www.robsfrogs.org.uk/index2.htm#R1 it gives a description of some of the pitfalls (the conversion stuff is... MORE

I had the same problem in a MK I sprite. Dropped the tank twice to find that the metal pipe inside the tank appears to be steel and does not turn. That pipe is probally not the problem. It only goes from the side of the tank (inside) to a filter at the bottom of the tank. The bent pipe you are talking about goes from the carbs to the tank unless it has been cut. The problem seems to be that it draws air in when it reaches 1/2 tank. What I found is that the fitting at... MORE
WOW!!! I am actually taking a vacation!!! And it has nothing (well, very little) to do with cars. I leave early (VERY early) Sunday morning for Reno, NV, then my GF is picking me up to drive to Lake Tahoe for the week. (Wasn't there an AH thing there? I'll look for oil spots.) We'll stop at the old Harrah's Auto Museum in Reno, just to make me happy! Spending two days at Yosemite, and I can't wait to get outta here! I'll watch e-mail tomorrow, then I'll be away. And I'll check in when I get home. Watch... MORE
Jon- The inside pipe IS a metal of some sort but it is not directly connected (per Don May's post) to the outside pipe. Also, all fuel tanks are not the same. Some come with a little filter screen at the internal pick-up and some don't, etc. I am afraid you are going to have to remove the tank (not a big deal, really, just a PITA!), remove the sender and get in there and find out what's going on to get this situation "straightened out". Obviously, this is also an excellent time to examine the tank for corrosion,... MORE
Does anyone know what the fuel pipe in the tank of a MKIV Sprite is made of? The metal pipe that sticks out of the side of the fuel tank is a bent one and I can't work out which way it should be facing so that the pipe in the tank is touching the bottom, I have tried listening for it to hit the bottom but no joy. It just draws air at half tank. Please help Thanks Jon "oscarsprite" 15638... MORE
Ah, yes Bob. You do recall correctly. He might disconnect the external pipe from the tank. That will loosen the inside pipe end to rotate inside the connection hole. May be possible to use a clean stick to insert into the connection fitting then push on the end of the inside pipe, apply pressure, and twist it into the proper angle. Otherwise about the only way to see the inside pipe end is to drop the tank, remove the fuel gage float unit and use the float opening hole to view and possibly use a screw driver or long... MORE
Jon- From what I recall, the "inside" and "outside" fuel tank pipes are not directly connected (where is Gerard or Frank when I really need them.....where??!!:), though I hope I recall incorrectly!! I think you are going to have to remove the tank and get a small person (or girl with slim hand and wrist) to get "in there" and get this right. Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 15644... MORE
You could afford vinegar with your old newspaper? You were lucky . I used to have sweep the entire length of the M1 before I went to school, and we only had one pair of shoes etc etc......... Had that happen one time. Overheated but the oil pressure stayed OK. Turned out to be a spun rod bearing. When it spun it clogged the oil hole thus keeping up the pressure. Doug 77 Michigan Doug Pletcher 15578... MORE
