Bill.... "Sidebar"...... Was going to check further on the PerTronix/tach accuracy at higher rpm situation today but major accident on RT.95 along with construction on the "northern route" squelched this short trip! Tomorrow looks better (I hope!). Where a PCV valve or later "closed loop" breathing system is not employed (later post '67 system encompassing fuel system), there exists no means to evacuate crankcase pressure/vapours. David Vizard points the way in this respect in accordance with his "bible" on Series A engines. In such a case.... one must go back in time to the pre-emission "ventilation" theory. In practice,... Absolutely. In the finaly analysis break fluid is there to transmit force from your foot to the brakes. Silicone does not do this as well as glycol based fluids (dot 4 etc.) as it is more compressible and less mobile therefore hindering bleeding. The only place you might justifyably use it is in a trailer queen. change your fluid regularly, be careful not to spill it and cover wings etc. when topping up and you've taken away all the reasons to use Silicone. jeremy.cogman@... 21916... Speaking of yesterdays show. On my way back from the show I heard a loud clunks noise come from the car. I was traveling in traffic and thought I may have run over something. I checked the guages and all looked ok. I checked them again about 30 seconds later and saw the temp gauge head right for the hot side of the gauge. Buy this time I was close to the rest area on the highway and pulled off. opened the hood and found the belt had come off. Ok I thought the belt had been throuwn. Upon... MORE
Nieither nor, Rob.... My feeling is you have another problem that has nothing to do with the breathing, ASUMMING both breathers & lines are freely breathing (open & clear) otherwise the catch tank would be full of oil. How much are you "losing" by the seals (sump, rear main, timing cover)? Or, are you getting "bluish" exhaust smoke indicating the engine is "using" it? Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 21879... MORE

Max I lay the hood on a flat surface inside up I then fold the panel containing the rear windows inwards so the inside of the window rests on the inside of the roof I then fold the rear side windows inwards being careful to fold the hood fabric between the windows and not the window. Next I roll the hood up from the front end so the header rail (with the two over centre clamps tucked in) finishes up in the middle with the hood rolled around it and the outside of the hood on the outside of... Hello everyone!!! I was wondering if anybody had any information regarding wiring harnesses for a 64 Sprite...My boyfriend and I am in the process of restoring one (oh, I am so glad this long winter is almost over and I can get to work) and we have spent the winter buying parts and fixing things that can be done inside. I did purchase a wiring harness, but it is only for the main electrical components, not for dashboard~ headlights. My boyfriend is very handy with this type of thing, but I do not know where I can find information/instruction... MORE
LOL, Kelly... That IS funny considering no mal- consequences. And a great girlfriend you had with a great sense of humor as well. She was "all right", sir! :) Reminds me of the time I was driving my MGA with a friend of mine out to a mutual buddy's frat party at Penn State. Raining cats and dogs as we crossed the George Washington Bridge "outbound" from NYC towards Joisey and the Lucas electrics did their thing right in the middle of the bridge (upper span, of course) in moderate traffic doing 40 or so. You've never seen a... MORE
The clutch was engaged when the petal was up. Not supposed to do that. Now recall that I had the Brakes and Clutch Repaired in Cincinnati about 5 years ago. All was fine, as good as it gets with the orig. design brakes for many short trips. This included a new Master cyl. and Slave cyl. Well, after posing the question to the "Club List" the best idea was that the relief hole in the master cyl. was plugged not allowing the presser to bleed off thus allowing the slave cyl. to move the pushrod back and engaging the... how big does a catch tank have to be for an uprated midget mk3 at the mo ive got a line form the timing case and rocker cover to a 600c tank and then from this to a K&N filter at the bottom of the engine bay i have just changed the oil and it seems to have used alot- alot alot! could the breather be to restrictiveand be causing increased oil consumption or do you think it may be the new oil? cheers Rob "Andrew" 21815... Brad Interesting thought, I'll have to check the harness! Although I suspect it was added at the same time as the fuel cut off switch. I'll have to check back through some bills and see if there's any mention of it. Thanks for your thoughts. Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 21804... MORE
deceleration sensor. Most modern cars have one though I'm not aware that it was ever standard fitment on any Spridgets, even US Spec ones. If the car is subject to a high deceleration (or acceleration for that matter I suspect) i.e. an accident, then it will shut off the fuel pump or maybe even close a solenoid operated valve in the fuel line. If it works and is reliable I'd leave it there though I'd learn how to bypass it and carry the necessary bits of wire so if it does go awol when you are a hundred miles... MORE
Hi I have just done the very same job on my 1962 midget and found eucalyptus oil to work a treat.A bonus, as it is a natural product it will not disolve the vinyl Good luck Gordon Denson "Gordon Denson" 21777... MORE
I'm working at cleaning up the vinyl covered interior panels of my '62 Sprite. There are a number of places where the tar-like material from the inside body of the car has gotten onto the red vinyl. Mineral spirits/paint thinner has removed the bulk of the tar but I can't remove lines of black that are residing in the little grooves of the surface. I tried lacquer thinner on the back side of one piece and it started to dissolve the vinyl. Is there a slick trick to get those black lines to disappear? Nelson Wittstock "witstock7" 21768... MORE
G'day Chris The Midget fan has a spacer, approx 1/4" thick, between the back of the plastic fan and the front of the water pump pulley. It pushes the fan forward so that it does not hit the oil seperator on the timing cover. You can get one for a lousy $5 or so, or make one up yourself. Dont space the fan out with washers - too much risk of the bolts coming loose and carving a nice round hole in the back of your radiator! avagoodday Colin "Colin Dodds" 21760... MORE

After being unable to play in this forum for some time I have rejoined and am again ready to trade info or whatever on my British obsession. FYI-My particular pain is a 1975 Midget 1500. When purchased nearly 4 years ago only the body showed signs of hope. Hell, it even smelled bad. Today the car has a new interior, engine, tranny, driveshaft, radiator, electronic ignition, rebuilt/replaced hydraulics, front tube shock conversion, electric fan, GM pickup truck alternator and much more. G'day Rob and Cap'n In a Bugeye, below the centre of the scuttle, there is a 5/16" UNF stud, about 1" long. There is a hole in the curved top face of the Bugeye dash that locates on this stud, with washer and nut. At each end of the rolled top of the dash is another hole, and they align to holes inside the top front of the door opening. A bolt, washer and nut hold them together. There is no bracket at the sides, like there is on the later dashboards. And there are two flat straps with... MORE
The Bugeye dash is held in place by 4 studs (5/16") that are welded in place in the dash top and two 1/2" braces (Straight - 22 gauge? with rolled (C) edges)that go from the firewall to the bottom of the dash. I didn't see any "brackets" when I recovered and installed my dash. The dash is held in place about 3/4" behind the cockpit surrond moulding. Bob, Troutdale, OR "Robert Webb" 21726... MORE

Yet another fun job. Developed a pin hole leak in the heater core on the 89 Lincoln Town Car a while back.. Checked with the local parts house...pretty cheap replacement..$42.00 USD. Checked with my mechanic, and asked him what the old flat rate manual said about the cost of the labor. much to my surprise, the manual estimated the replacement cost of around $600.00....and called for WARRANTY... On my 66 the seat rails are attached by studs affixed thereto and fastened to the car by nuts and washers fitted from under the car. Being in a rather vulnerable position, they tend to become rather rusty and seize solid. That is why so mayn cars now have nuts and bolts fitted through the floor. It is well worth coating the threads and nuts thoroughly in grease, as I did back in the 60s, and as a result have never had trouble from this source. (Its great when you know the history of the vehicle because it has... MORE
0s. You can get a lot of e 'old' 900 (K reg and before). ith the backs seat down. It has been reliable and cheap to insure, true!
