well, I remember the two you don't, but drew a blank on a lot of the rest (is that because I'm British, or does it mean my memory's failing?!) Regards David "David Jacobs" 17647... MORE
yes, the early UK radio consoles were different and now rare as rocking horse proverbial! I have been trying to find an original one for my '74 round wheel arch car and I think I've NEVER seen one except in books! They were much narrower than the US (and later 1500 type) being only the width of a standard radio at the bottom, then widening slightly to the top, so there was no room for extra switches, only the radio and speaker. I suspect your 1971 model would have had the same type. As has been noted elsewhere, the... MORE
Howdy All! I just joined this here site, you all seem like a bunch of fun folks to converse with!! I own & single-handedly restored a 1967 MG Midget MKII. I purchased an original 3-window hardtop from ebay & have it restored. I need a source which can provide me with replacement seals as I have used the original & cracked seals. I have tried.....Moss, British Vicky, & J.C.Whitney to no avail. For the side windows, I just inverted the seals on opposite sides, so, yes, the chrome trim is on the inside!!!! Thanks folks!!! ~Charlie "qxpmrbyd " 17633... MORE
Nigel, The radio console in my 69 MK-III is made of sheet metal and covered with b lack vinyl. Do You plan on making it of metal or of wood? The console also has the emergency blinker light switch on its front and the flasher unit mo unted inside. I'm not sure if the UK units are the same as the US. If so I can take a few photos as I have it out to repair the vinyl covering that us ually comes loose where it wraps around the edges. Don "Don May" 17631... MORE
Hi folks, I'm currently restoring my 1971 (built 1970) RH Gan-5 MG Midget for the UK =3D=0D home market. The dashboard in the car was 'adapted' by previous owners with additions, and removals (ammeter and cigarette lighter added, ignition key and badge =3D=0D moved) and I'd like to restore it to its original state. The switch type is =3D=0D toggle and not rocker. I have put a correct dashboard picture (dashboard.jpg) in an album titled Dashboard&Radionconsole, with letters representing the holes. Could someone please let me know by emailing me the instruments that correspond to the instrument hole letters... MORE
Shame I don't live closer Don, I'd love a 1275 Midget to go with my 1098 Mk2, It would be a shame to 'part' it. In the UK they definitly suffer from the old metal moth and most of that age heve had to be re-built or re-shelled by now, due to winter salt etc. Good ones are few and far between. Remember my questions about a cheap muffler to test the 1275 I am working on. Well today I put the last of the parts back on to a point I was ready to try and start it. Looked down at the missing muffler, looked at my remote start switch, thought about the neighbors for a second then pushed the start button. I should regain my hearing by tomorrow, but what a thrill. When I was a child my dad took me to an open house at Barksdale Air Force base. They lit off a captured German buzz bomb for... MORE
Road humps / speed humps deja vu The first link shows how the local safety campaigners and council get it wrong. Battle of Hastings http://www.hastings.uk.net/latest/archives2001/161201/moon.html Oxford resident gets his own back regarding speed humps. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/2513605.stm The second guy shows how it can be done. Cheers Alan PS In a modern car , I find the faster you go over the speed humps the less you notice them. and Is it any wonder that the suburban yuppies drive round in 4 wheel drive off roaders ???? There is, believe it or not, a "British Standard Speed Bump"! It defines the height, approach angle and length of the "bump". Highways authorities are supposed to only construct bumps within the defined rules. There are also rules about positioning ( not on bends for example as they are dangerous to motorcyclists). They can also only be used in speed-restricted areas, - I think the limit is 30mph. Problems arise where rule books and the actual practice of the men with the tarmac truck differ! I think that the height limit is three and a half inches, which doesnt... MORE

I don't know what the US accordion types are like but at least some in the UK are abysmal. After two that failed after less than 10k miles I gave up and now use straight pipe and have never had to replace one due to failure though I do it routinely when the head is off. I now have a Metro head and no bypass hose, hurrah! jeremy.cogman@... 17492... MORE

Hi Olgierd I once had a problem a bit like this, in my case the car pulled one way on acceleration and the other on braking It puzzled me for a while but when I stripped it down I found a brake wheel cylinder partially seized. When I accelerated the drag from the partially on brake pulled me one way and when I braked the more efficient free brake pulled me the other way. You say you have just replaced the rear brake pads so it could just be one side incorrectly adjusted or something not gone back together... MORE

Hi Colin, Saw your message about your RWA Austin Sprite. Mine is the same model, but has the "correct" square wheel arches (round wheels, square arches !) First registered (in UK) 26 May 1971 I don't have thae actual build date, but guess it may have been sitting in the dealership for some time as it is # 86947, that is 752 cars before yours. Don, being of UK origin with a 1275, I don't have a great deal of experience with dual master cylinders, but I DO have a factory manual (reprint) which has a cross section diagram that shows the front and rear piston 'cups' both immediately adjacent to their respective ports to the reservoir. If you can measure the port to port distance somehow (either with the reservoir removed or on a scrap one?), this will allow you to calculate the spacing for the pistons. Regards David PS if you want the diagram or instructions scanning, let me know. "David Jacobs"... MORE

G"day all, and happy new year to you. According to Terry Horler's Original Sprite and Midget, the RWA cars were produced from October 1971, and all badged as Midgets. Anders Ditlev Clausager (Curator(?) of the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust) agrees, in his book Sprites and Midgets. So all RWA cars are Midgets, right? So here's a conundrum. I own an Austin Sprite (AAN10/87699) which according to the BMIHT certificate was built on 4 June 1971, and it has round wheel arches. From personal inspection, and according to a few panelbeaters with Sprite/Midget experience, this is a genuine car... MORE
May your SU's stay tuned and Lucas connectors tight. May your water temperature stay under 190 and your oil pressure stay above 20. May you encounter no speed bumps over 2 and one half nor bounding deer, nor SUV's who can't see you in their rear. May you only see the bright road ahead through windshield, never under your feet between clutch and brake. May you always remember those annoying oil leaks are but a blessing for they are markers along the road without which some of us would never find our way home. And when that durn Spriget... MORE
Rob, just picked up on a bit of the old email below From: PilotRob@... Subject: RE: Digest Number 678 winter driving Sure, Alan... They use grit more often now, not so much cinders around now they've gone 'green', Rock Salt is still used in UK , but usually either too early or late, and subject to council budgets.
