Hi Ian and Cathy, I now have a record of a total of 5 Mk1 Midgets, and yours is by far the oldest. Come on all of you, I have an unfinished task here!! Margaret South Lincolnshire (UK) mmbrock88@... 11610... MORE

I too salute all those who served, are serving, and will serve this great nation of ours and also would like to proudly salute and say thank you to our allies who have served along side us, especially the British. I drove the Midget up to Thorpe Abbots, a W.W.II Airfield, just up the road from our house in Suffolk, England (stationed here with the USAF). The base was used by the 100th Bomb Group ("The Bloody 100th). Quite a haunting feeling to walk around the area and think of how many men took off from that airfield and... MORE

One isn't entirely in contol of one's own destiny. A few years ago I was broadsided by someone with a mental illness in a Nissan Cherry estate (well it would be wouldn't it) The Sprite was actually bent around the roll bar mounts i.e. the bar braced the car laterally and prevented intrusion. I can also think of any number of freak accidents that could tip you over or end up with an SUV or truck on top of you. The guy protected by a windscreen was lucky, in truth they have little strength. I can understand people not... MORE

That's 3 GAN 1's so far. Any more? I'll keep a note of them all. Maybe later on we could do the same with Mk3's??.... Margaret South Lincolnshire (UK) mmbrock88@... 11526... MORE

Mark Not sure there are too many bargains to be had in the UK, I suspect that most things are cheaper in the US (all to do with exchange rates) although recent posts indicate engine rebuilds are a bit pricey in the US ( but engines are hardly hand luggage). I am in Cambridgeshire, not too far (45 miles north from MK} and maybe could meet up with you (in the Sprite) depending on when you are in the UK since I like to drive the Sprite in France a bit in the Summer. I did meet up with... MORE

Margaret Tell me when and where and if me and the Sprite are in the UK that weekend we WILL join you. The Treasure hunt was a great success, the sun came out at the start and all the Sprites that turned up (and they were all Sprites} enjoyed a brilliant day driving through some of the best thatched villages in England in the brilliant sunshine (all tops down I actually got sun burnt) and downing the odd pint of real ale. You missed out on a great event. Quentin, who planned the event did a lot of work... MORE

I do believe you are right. I'm taking it in Friday to have them changed out, along with a full brake job. The master cylinder looks good though. Thanks for your help! Brake pedal does not 'return' when applied. Brakes firm - no sponge and does not sink to the floor. No evidence of fluild leakage at master cylinder, down pedal bracket or on the outside or inside of the wheels. Large resovoir fluid is clear. Smaller one is muddy. :~( Austin 1974 MG Midget - England 1977 MG B Roadster - Florida http://photos.yahoo. com/pete rene austin Midget1974MG@... 11486... MORE

Jason & rlirwn@aol. Looking at your (USA) prices for doing up an engine $4000 ? Astounding. That's what I'd expect to pay for a car, in running / good condition . A rebuilt midget engine is about =A3700 =3D $1021 over here, in stock form. And =A31281 =3D$1868 for a 1293 cc tuned to stage 2 (fast road use) by rep utable builders. Shipping costs to USA ?? surely not $2100. Rebuilding an engine myself , but having a rebore and regrind plus new par ts should only cost about =A3350 (yes I know its my time ,but I'm... MORE

Hi Listers, I am swapping my frogeye front suspension for a later disc set up, and also adding an anti-roll bar. Most of the parts are available (at a price) but some for exchange only (eg hubs). I have been looking for some cheap used parts to exchange (to avoid the surcharge) and use any serviceable items. Are the (much) later rubber bumper midget front suspensions the same as the earlier midget ones? I guess the springs might be different - but what else? In addition, are the 1500 rear half shafts useable in a frogeye axle? Thanks Chris... MORE

In the UK it is NOT illegal to re-set or adjust an odometer. What IS illegal is to do so with the intention of misleading a purchaser as to the true mileage. So you can re-set the speedo, so long as you notify the next owner when you sell it on. At present I have no intention of selling my Sprite anyway, but would be quite happy to explain that I reset it to Zero when I did a full "nut and bolt" rebuild 2 years ago. Guy "Guy Weller" 11348... Hi Chris, No you have this right. I have stripped it down, removed the odometer unit complete with "pie pan" (thought it was aluminium, but logically it is steel). Then removed the little nylon ratchet lever, pinion and shaft. I am left with the spinning magnet which rotates in a bearing in a fancy little cruxiform aluminium casting. This is the bit with 10 mm "fore and aft" movement. Pushed down, it rotates freely without binding. Pushed upwards (towards face of speedo) it binds. When all is assembled, I think that when the flexible speedo drive cable is fully... MORE
