What about Midgets? Poppy, my Mk 1 Midget, was despatched to the USA direct from Abingdon in December 1961. About thirty years later she 'came home', and is still up and running!! Margaret South Lincolnshire (UK) mmbrock88@... 11221... MORE

Hi Jeremy Lots of people seem to fill the AH in in red (my old caps were like this) But originally they had no paint. Not all the cars in Terry's book are concours, although most are very nice, take a look at the mineral blue MK IV on page 86, the passenger side has a front wing from a later thin bumper car. Look at the distance from the bottom of the headlight to the top of the side light both sides. I have just corrected the same fault on my Sprite. Regards Dave (66 Sprite in Cambridgeshire... MORE

Its worth spending some money to get the car to a known good state from which you can then learn about it and repair things as they need it. Well worth having a recommendation. Guys There's a rollbar from a Mk1 Midget on eBay in the UK that I will bid for if it will fit in my Frogeye. Does anyone know if it will? The seller describes it this way: "... it fits immediately behind the seats onto the floorpan, then 2 more brackets fit onto the rear wheel arch." He also told me "...it was on my Mk.1 Midget (The type similar to the frogeye, with no door handles)" Look forward to your words of wisdom. Chris 1959 Frogeye Stockport cg.warren@... 11177... MORE

The Haynes manual is very good as is the factory manual. Factory manuals come up quite often on ebay for not much money. Where are you Virginia, in the US the Robert Bentley Manual is also spoken of very highly but I've never seen it myself. It is available in the UK, I think I've seen it in Foyles. Water pump change is not difficult only fiddly insofar as you have to remove the radiator to get access. Hardest part is probably relocating the four rad mounting bolts which requires a bit of patience. Jeremy '63 Sprite Hampshire "Jeremy... MORE

Hi All, I have two requests for help, one basic - the other related to tools. The basic question is: I have stripped the car and will have re-painted the body soon. In terms of mechanical parts, is there an order of rebuild that I should be guided by. What do i put back first? My guess would be : Brake pipes, wiring harness, fuel tank, rear suspension/brakes, front suspension/brakes, engine/gearbox, ancillary electricals (heater, wipers), dash, trim, then seats. Or doesn't it matter much? Secondly, I am going to buy a sander. Is a random orbit sander worth the... MORE

I knew I had read this before, The link below explains all you ever wanted to know about British car registrations. My long answer in the thread is pretty complete. Also the link to the website I refer to in my reply is very good. http://www2.mgcars.org.uk/cgi-bin/gen5?runprog=mgbbs&mode=archiveth&archiveyear=110_2002.dat&access=31860385406021&subject=110&subjectar=110&source=T&thread 02032217335428578 WGC 833 would have been registered in London sometimes the local council retain the registration records and can tell you who or what car the reg. plates were first issued to Regards Alan "alan.east-jones" 11026... Guy You have always been able to keep/retain a registration number and transfer it from one vehicle to another if you were prepared to pay. It is just that over recent years it has been advertised to suit the changing ego and persona of UK residents :-) Another Guy from the (old) 'DK' region. "guyrday" 10994... MORE

Hi Adam All this is a matter of opinion and I am not sure if you are looking for a Midget rather than a Sprite or either. The truth is that the Midget is a copy of the Sprite, the first car being the MK 1 Sprite (frogeye) designed by Healey using Austin mechanicals. All the cars built since the frogeye use basically the same body and floor pan but with cosmetic exterior modifications. Most of the modifications to the car were driven by legislation or an attempt to keep up with the competition and maintain market share and... MORE

Chris, Margaret's message is a fuller and more detailed explanation. Yes, sorry I swapped over the 2nd two letters. My mistake. Either way, they will denote where it was registered, so GP will relate to one of the licensing towns/ cities in the UK. This applied even to the earlier 2 - letter plates, not just to the later ones after the introduction of the year numbering system. Also, in the UK the registration number almost always stays with the car. Only in recent years has it been legal to change the registration plate for a "personalised" plate. Guy... MORE

Black ground with raised aluminium letters was the correct style for that age, and right up to about 1973 (my '71 has that style) After that they were on yellow or white backgrounds. After 1963 ( I think) they introduced the additional letter to denote the year, as in A 27 JPG, so yours is certainly pre- '63. The 2nd and 3rd letter will denote the original licencing authority - i.e. where abouts in the UK it was first registered. I don't remember what PG stands for. In the "good old days" the AA handbooks had an index in... MORE

Not surprised, Andrew!! Though this says great things about your coordination and driving style, it also says great things about the way Japanese cars are put together. "Run good, last a long time".....and, they do! After trying a Datsun gearbox, I'd find it nearly impossible to go back to the British box, which (I am afraid) can only be described as "crude" by comparison. Seriously, Japanese mechanicals are just generally well built. I had a flying buddy with 250K on his Honda "commuter".....burned a little oil but never had the head off and has the original clutch!! Like me... MORE

Hi Chris, The first registration number in the UK was A1, followed by A2 and so on. When they rab out of combinations, two letters were used, followed by up to 4 mumbers. Each county was given it's identifying letters. Then came numbers followed by letters. Next came 3 letters, followed by 3 numbers, the last two letters being for the county of issue. After that, we got 3 numbers followed by 3 letters. Then in 1963, we got 3 letters, three numbers and the letter A at the end. In 1964 the A was replaced with B and... MORE

Listers: I have just been given what I believe is an authentic British license plate from a 30s-era MG (maybe a 1937?). Plate is black-faced with "JGP 27" in raised aluminum-faced figures. Can anyone explain to me the British license plate numbering system, or point me to a Web site that discusses it? Any way to determine if this thing is real? Thanks!
