LOL, Stuart!! But as for the Spridget Pickup thing, don't do it man, don't do it!! Please, I take it all back!! As for Charles and his distributor problem on a gorgeous Sunday...ah, well...I cannot tell you how many times I have "BTDT" in these respects. F'rinstance: Today, after 3 weeks in the shop sorting problems, I finally get to pick up my little Frog with it's new Rivergate engine and 5 speed installed. It is the 5th day of Spring, Stuart. Should be sunny and bright with temps. in the low 50's or something like that, right? So... MORE

Thanks for the replies about the Piston order. Now a query about the clutch. The carbon bearing has been replaced by a much deeper roller bearing- seems a good idea, but in order to fit it the circular boss which is fitted to the centre of the clutch itself to allow the bearing to compress the springs has been removed so that the roller bearing now pushes directly on the spring fingers themselves. Is this normal? Before I took it apart, I noticed that there was some judder in releasing the clutch in first gear unless the engine was... MORE

Rob Don't worry about resale value do whatever pleases you the most, but in my case I have just put a new 1098 in my 66 Sprite (coz it's a fun car not a fast car). If I wanted a fast car I would buy an E type or something. Have fun Dave (UK) "David Dixon" 8841... MORE

Dave I work for one of the few remaining mass production engine building companies in the UK, and we use selective assembly on con rods to achieve the optimum piston topping dimension. Piston topping is the dimension from the cylinder head to the top of the piston at TDC, in our case the con rods are divided into length grades and are selected to give the optimum piston topping for each cylinder. The point of all this is that different cylinders in the same engine can have different length con rods depending on where the piston and crank fall... MORE

I can confirm that if an old engine is flushed out, it spells disaster! When my husband gave our son his Triumph Spitfire, he decided that the best thing to do was to give the engine a good clean out. So he flushed it through several times, then after giving it a bit of a service, decided to go hell for leather down the A1. Needless to say we got a phone call to say the car had blown up!. Yes, the flushing had got rid of all the crud holding the engine together. A nut on the end... MORE

Babyblumg- I, too, bought a Sprite with a stock 1098 & transferred the Datsun 5 speed from my wrecked '67 into my Frog, along with the 3.7 diff as well. As the two lower gears of the Datsun box are lower than the English box, no acceleration performance penalty too any great extent. BTW, this 1098 has got to be one of the sweetest running Series A types I have ever run, too the extent I am saving it as a "spare", should I ever have a problem with the 1293 which has replaced it. The 1275 (plus .020)... MORE

I could do with some advice on the following. I'm in the process of stripping down the 1275cc engine in my Midget. I'm now at the stage of removing the pistons and as expected, each of the con rods big-ends are stamped with a number to indicate the cylinder into which they are fitted. However, whilst the con rod in cylinder 4 is stamped '4' and the con rod in cylinder 3 is stamped '3', the con rod in cylinder 2 is stamped '1' and the con rod in cylinder 1 is stamped '2'. In other words they seem... MORE

About Castrol 20w/40 I buy it here at Argentine at any oil store, it is bottled at Canada........... Hope it helps..................... Jorge 1973 MG Midget Near Antartica !!!!!!.................LOL !!!!!!!!! "Jorge Dimitrakis" 8812... MORE

Thanks for that Bree. Yahoo should really advise when they are going off line for maintenance.! By the way, I'm going up into my attic before the eekend, so will look out the manual for you. Can you remind me which bit you are interested in, so I can look it up and get it ready to attach to an off-list e-mail . Margaret South Lincolnshire (UK) mmbrock88@... 8807... MORE

Hi James, Yes, I got you off-list mail. I am in the process of checking if St. John are covering that date. If so, I will be there parked up at the med. centre. If another organisation is providing the first aid, I will be there anyway, but not at the med. centre. I will let you know as soon as I do, and arrange a meeting. I look forward to it!! Hello folks A friend of mine who also work for British Leyland many years ago has suggested that I use Castrol 20w/40 for my motor oil instead of 10w/30. I have had a hell of a time trying to locate some. Does anyone know if this stuff is still around? and if not what would be a 2nd best option? I live in Maine USA so cold weather is also a thing to keep in mind. Thanks all Jason Gross 1971 MG Midget PS If anyone might know of a way to get a striped drain plug out of... MORE

Jim, the only white with brown strip that I see used anywhere is on a UK model 1275 positive earth. It is for the oil filter switch to ground. "Brent Wolf" 8778... MORE

Nothing like a good drink in the comfort of your own home. We've just demolished a bottle of wine and tub of raspberry pavovla ice cream, having spent an hour looking for the dog in the dark, wet and muddy fields. He eventually toddled home on his own, where we had to hose him down!! Dogs!! The cats (Muffin and her niece Gizmo) are OK though. They refuse to go out in the wet Margaret South Lincolnshire (UK) mmbrock88@... 8776... MORE

Well, I'm going to disagree with you (yes, again). If you read my earlier posts on this topic, I mentioned having opened about 4 or 5 1275's and I am currently even rebuilding a Datsun 210 engine, which is basically a metric British engine. I digress... anyway, the couple engines I opened that had the "goo" in them had planty of scratches and scarred bearings, even though one of them had already been rebuilt at least once. The 210 Datsun (which is as near a bulletproof engine as you can get) also had the 'goo'. Becuase the metallurgy in... MORE

Hi Jason According to my original Sprite hand book it is bad practice to let your car warm up at idle speed at a standstill, much better to warm it at higher revs on the move. On the question of oil colour I have a newly rebuilt engine and at 1000 miles the oil looks almost as clean as it did when it was put in (quite difficult to see it on the dipstick since it is so clear. Prior to the rebuild it was like yours, but if it runs ok and doesn't burn oil who cares about... MORE

'IS THERE ANYBODY THERE?' said the traveller, as he smote upon the door. That's from a poem I learned at school many years ago! It's now been two days, with no e-mail from the list. What's happened? Have I been accidentally removed? Any response would be apreciated Many thanks Margaret South Lincolnshire (UK) mmbrock88@... 8720... MORE

I assume you've done away with the smog gear, and if, in addition to what you've already done, you increase the compression a little, and install a slightly hotter cam, you should have a car capable of 95- 100 mph, and with plenty of zip, able to cruise at Interstate speeds. Still it probably won't be as crisp or smooth as a modern electronic, fuel injected, twin cam Japanese car, but then it's old and it's British. A straight thru muffler and a dollop of castor oil added to the sump will only add to the character missing in... MORE

Another suggestion for a 1500cc Midget. The European 1500 cars had dual SU carbs, minimal emission control mods, and, I think, higher compression and hotter cam. These parts might be available good used from a source in England, and maybe someone who posts here from the UK could help in locating same. My neighbor has a rubber bumper car which he bought new in Europe, and it will run rings around my 1275, something the US spec 1500s can't do. "tloutrec" 8683... MORE

Hi Guys, Is it possible, within reason, to pull a rear hub without a puller - or do I have to buy one? I have been given almost new rear brake backplates, so want have to remove hubs to fit them (old ones are very rusty). Any ideas? Well I know that putting a B engine in a Spridget is pretty offensive but I'm sure it's no reason to unsubscribe. Seriously Stanley, if you want to do an upgrade there are plenty of better one: Mazda Rotary, Toyota Twink, Rover-K are among the more popular. Search the archives and you'll find plenty. Also look at the BBS at mgcars.org.uk. "Jeremy Cogman" 8638... MORE
