Does anyone know (assuming the rear springs have settled in) how much distance there should be between the rubber stops on the top of the rear axle and the body, assuming the car is empty except for a few tools and a spare wheel but with a full tank. I have about an inch on one side and inch and a half on the other but feel it should be more By the way it's a 58 Frogeye. Gary L camden London "garyloisuk" 8130... MORE

John, you "basket case" my have come from the USA, but it may have come fro m Germany as mine did. Check the chassis plate it may give you more clues, as mine is written in German. I wrote to the DVLA and for =A35 they sent photo copies of all the previous owners logbooks (I think you call them pinkslips in the USA). My car was first registered in Germany and was originally left hand drive.=0D =0D =0D Gary King (Newcastle UK)=0D 69 Sprite MKIV=0D =0D =0D "Gary King" 8078... MORE

I have just bought an absolute basket case Midget for spares. My wife is going to kill me when she sees it (she is away for a few days and going to come back to a pile of rust on the drive) but that's another story. The car is LHD and I assume USA spec - never seen one in the UK before. It has a small Sprinzel badge on the boot and I am wondering if this was a limited edition. Anyone have any info? The body is completely standard (not alloy) if you can call rust everywhere... MORE

Hi Chris, I'm not sure I understand your question. If you mean the axle housing, you must use the quarter elliptic housing from the earlier cars. A semi-elliptic from a later car will not work without a lot of modifications to the chassis and not easily done. You can mistake the two, they look very different in their attachment points. The axles (half-shafts) are interchangeable between early and late as long as you don't cross disc and wire wheel axles. If you acquire used ones, you need to examine the splines and determine which was on the right and... MORE

Hi everyone, I am rebuilding my '58 Frogeye and am looking at putting the rear axle back on (it hasn't had one, or rear springs etc. since I bought it). It has a neat home made wooden dolly though! I will be putting a road going 1275 engine and ribbed gear box in. however, does this mean that I have to replace the original axle? is there an ID number that would confirm if the axle is original? If I need to replace it, what axle should I use? Finally, advice on the type of springs and dampers that... MORE

Rick, Last time we were in Vegas we drove out to the Canyon via a bit of Route 66 and the Hoover Dam spending the night in Williams in-between. Really enjoyed it (although not in a LBC) and I can thoroughly recommend Pancho McGilligudy's (sp?) in Williams, if you ever get a chance drop in and see if they still serve Newcastle Brown Ale brewed about half a mile away from my door! It might be worth your time to call Jeff at British and Swedish Car Spares in Alpharetta. While his primary business is used parts, he does have access to new parts, and sometimes has great prices. He might be able to find a properly rebuilt engine at a very good price. He might, maybe, even have a very good used engine cheap, since he has been taking these cars apart for the past 25 years. Difficult to establish who actually first said anything but I like the one attributed to Winston Churchill (British prime minister) and Lady Astor first lady member of parliament and a great wit in her own right). Lady Astor to Winston 'If you were my husband I would put poison in your tea' , Winston to Lady Astor 'If I were your husband I would drink it'. Also attributed to Winston, ever an accurate judge of character, 'America will always do the right thing, after they have exhausted all the other possibilities'. 'Elastic blades', I love it. much more impressive sounding than 'leaf springs'. Your problem could either be worn shocks not removing sufficient energy quick enough or worn 'elastic blades' allowing too much deflection. However I used to have a similar problem in my mk2 Sprite (quarter elliptical rear springs) and although it felt like a rear end problem it went away when I installed harder but shorter front springs and NEW front dampers. The NEW front dampers were chosen because there is a real recon quality problem in Britain but good quality rebuilt shocks should be good enough. "Jeremy... MORE

I would appreciate it if you could find out for me Tim, as I am having a hand built silencer made by one of my friends shortly. The reason I need to know is that I have just changed my engine (from 1098) to a 1275. I am currently running it with the original single carb, so I haven't had to change the manifold yet. Once I put the twins on, I may have to change the exhaust if the 1275 manifold is a different bore. Cheers, Gary King (Newcastle UK) 69 Sprite MKIV "Gary King" 7926... MORE

I have used Recoil stainless steel insertable threads a few times and found them to be excellent. We had a sales rep come out to my work and give us a demo and he told us that Rolls Royce and Jaguar use them from the factory in there aluminium engine components because they are so much stronger than just tapping the aluminium. I recently used them to repair damaged spark plug threads in the alloy head on my Nissan Patrol and they worked great. Tim Trenwith Melbourne Australia "Trenwith, Tim TJ" 7895... MORE

Stuart Bad luck mate! The standard ones are too weak for the job in a standard car. So with a fresh engine (more power?) etc you will have problems. If you are going to replace it makes sense to upgrade (in pairs!!) and both Peter May and Frontline offer good uprated items which the race boys fail to break and can handle up to 140bhp in the K series cars!! http://www.mgcars.org.uk/frontline/rearsus.htm http://www.petermayengineering.co.uk/ While your at it, check the wheel bearings and consider a twin bearing conversion as it stops the flex in the shaft which contributes to the failure....
