Has anyone fitted a spin-on oil filter conversion kit to their engine? Mini Mania do them (part no._SPIN-ON_FILTER), but I haven't seen them in the UK. My girlfriend is reluctant to lie under the car again and line up the long bolt that goes through the old canister/filament filter so I really want to get a conversion done before the next oil change! regards, Mark. You know the things, right? Brass body with 5 pipes and an electrical connection. Fitted to Marinas and Itals, Sherpas, 1500 UK Midgets etc etc etc. So.....which pipe goes where? Unit was cut out of the car by PO. Guess that split is front - rear. Two outlets to the two front brakes? One to the rear? Just rubber O-rings to make the seal? What if one fails. Does it allow fluid to blast out the switch, or is that a bit far fetched? Metro uses two separate bias valves on a dual circuit system to give failure protection... MORE

Are there other cars that use the same heater that the midget does? My heater is quite rusty and I feel like replacing it. In the beakers yards in Norway there are no midgets. (And nearly no other classic British cars) Thorvald (Norway) 1977 midget "Thorvald" 1468... MORE

Hi to the group. I used to be on the old list 3-4 years ago but dropped out after a time. I blew the head gasket on my '78 Midget over a year ago and found I had a cracked head. Pulled the engine and kept thinking I would rebuild it. Since I am mechanically challenged, it set for 1.5 years on my garage floor. When I 1st logged onto this group a few days ago, I read where someone had bought a used motor on ebay. A light bulb went off and I looked on ebay to find... MORE

Mike - Just to let you and anyone else who has an IOW Frogeye know that if a rear suspension unit fails, it is a soluble problem. The units are not off a trailer/ caravan but some kind of industrial plant. The firm that originall y made them has gone, but Indespension have sourced some more. The new ones have a better casing and are round, not square in section but the base plat es are interchangeable. Even the bolt holes fit! The contact is a guy called Gordon in Axles OE on 0870 6025394. The part no. is... MORE

Both of the "experts" here in Perth ( the Aussie one) had never seen such a thing before, but these things are getting older all the time and perhaps these things will occur more frequently. The car is fixable, the memory of going upside down at about 100kms per hour on our one and only freeway will last a long time. once again thank you to all and sundry for your help in the past ,and in advance for the future.......... chris broughton. Chris Sounds like a scary shunt. Glad you're OK and that your car is repairable. Your story only goes to show that no-one running a Spridget can afford to be complacent and that goes double for those of the racing and/or tuning fraternity. Checking things like front stub axles, Steering rack mounts, suspension mountings and rear axles for wear and/or cracking should be done on a regular basis... I have seen a couple of rear axles that I have rejected for use on my race car becase they are just too rusty and I was concerned about their strenghth.... MORE

Bob As promised the gospel according to Vizard... The 'Evacusump' system "The system draws air out of the crankcase on the engine so as to reduce the pressure in the crankcase.... ...at idle, intake manifold vacuum is used to draw a vacuum on the crankcase . Depending on the intake manifold used either 1 or 2 PCV valves can be plumbed into the crankcase at the rocker cover. When an intake manifold vacuum exists air will be drawn from the crankcase via the the valve cover and the fumes will simply be burnt in the combustion chamber. When the... MORE

Paul Sounds like you have an air leak in there somewhere - dismantle the carbs again and check you have all the gaskets in the right places - also that the inlet and exhaust manifolds are fitted properly and that the fixing nuts are tight. Paul Not related? Made in the same factory! (bigger brother?) The MGB uses a similar inlet manifold to the Midget (just bigger) The SU manifold has a 'balance pipe' across the two inlet tracts and so mixture from the RH carb can go across to the LH inlet port and vice versa. Why this should upset a colour tune I don't know... Regards James Bilsland Charing UK "James Bilsland" 1413... MORE

Here's a slightly worrying thought. Imagine running into the back of another Midget at night. BANG! crumple his fuel tank and it splashes fuel all over the front of your car. Since the halogen lenses are smashed, there is great potential for sparks. WHOOOOOF!! The point is that Midget wiring looms (on UK cars, at least) do not have any form of fuse on them for the headlights. The sidelights are fused (red wires on the fusebox) but the main(blue+white)/dipped(blue+red) are unfused. Pre 77(-ish) looms also run thinner wiring to the headlamps which are less capable of handling the... MORE

I've put a couple of MPEGS up on the AHSDC website. They are of the motorkhana held at the Australian Sprite National Challenge held over Easter in South Australia. My bugeye is in restoration mode at the moment, so my Midget was out there. It was still in Rally setup so was not all that competative on the track. (A strategically placed dip at the Mallala track - never been there before - exposed a problem with my new rear suspension), so I still have work to do.. The mpegs are big (full version 23Mb, shorter version 10Mb), but... MORE

Hello Everyone, I've recently purchased a 1979 Midget (California model). The car is in a state of neglect and needs about a million little things but it appears basically sound. My first question is about the Lucas 17 amp fuses. All the data I have say the fuses are "17 amp continuous(35 amp blow rated)". Does this mean I can substitute 35 amp fuses for the Lucas fuses? I've checked the local auto stores and no one carries 17 amp. They even have a "British car assortment" with no 17's. TIA for helping a clueless newbie. Michael Sullivan 1389... MORE

If the valve dimensions are right on a 1300 valve (i.e valve seat to collet) then use a 1300 race valve (EN21 stainless) as the standard exhaust valve is a horribly shaped thing... Ireland is one of the most beautiful countries in Europe, in my opinion. Places to go in Ireland, and enjoy the drive, include the Ring of Kerry and the Dingle Peninsula in the SouthWest. Galway and Connamora in the West are beautiful, with plenty of very friendly pubs, a llittle city of Clifton (check spelling) on the West coast has some beautiful driving roads without much traffic. I had a 3 cyl Opel there and enjoyed the driving, I can't imagine how much fun it would be in a real car. The last time I was there I had... MORE
