The UK server of the Midget & Sprite Club website (wwww.midgetspriteclub.com) is temporarily down. I believe a piece of kit has expired over at www.mgcars.org.uk If you need to access the site use the US based mirror site here: http://www.british-cars.org.uk/kimber/midgetspriteclub/ Hopefully it will al be back and up and running soon 'cos I have 3 hours of updates to add! Time has come to treat my Sprite to a present for passing the MOT first time. i was thinking of some alloy wheels.... do any of you whizzkids know what might fit... that doesnt cost a fortune, and maybe I could locate in a local scrapyard... or off another production car? What size of wheels will fit... what rubber can I fit on them...and where can I get them? ps... I dont/ wont buy from anyone called Darren in a pub!!! hope you can help yellow devil in Exeter England. eugeneb@... "EUGENE BONNER" 606... MORE

Raoul My reference book tells me that you should have the following part numbers on the cylinder head of a 948cc Sprite engine: - 2A 629 2A628 12A 1456 A 12G 206 head would go on a 998cc Cooper or 1098cc Midget (don't know about 12A 206...). I think that a 12G 185 is a Cooper 'S' head (and therefore rare and valuable if not cracked...). I am afraid I cannot find any 2A 829A head... I hope the above is of help - incidentally if you have a 1098 head it flows much better than the 948 head... MORE

Hi Just to let you know. This is how I fitted the unit. I will upload these instructions to the server. I feel a lot safer now. Drivers round here are an unforgiving lot, they are so used to modern cars where the flashers all go at the same rate I got the impression they thought I kept changing my mind. Headlamp relay all sorted. Dead simple. All the bits bought. Just waiting for it to stop raining and get warmer and I will do it. Just want to make absolutly sure I got it right then I will... MORE

Another use, and probable the main one, is when headlamps are needed in daytime, i.e. fog, there is not usually a need for instrument lights. Margaret South Lincolnshire (UK) Between two evils, always pick the one you never tried before. mmbrock88@... 593... MORE

Hi all Swipe me, I have just uploaded the alternator conversion document and the sketch of the regulator box conversion to the yahoo file area. I don't know how many accounts I now have but I made it after about 45 min of working my way round Yahoo, reckon they designed Hampton Court maze. I have put both in a folder called, funnily enough, alternator conversion. I have sent individual copies of the sketch to those who asked for it where I was given an e-mail address and where it worked. Anyone like to let me know if they... MORE

Rob I know that Shaun Rainsford (Classic Cars of Kent tel. 020 8301 5239) was looking for a longstroke crank. You might also give Peter May ( 01384 422424) a ring as he might know someone looking for one... James Bilsland Charing UK "James Bilsland" 567... MORE

In days of old, cars parked at night, on a main road, had to display side lights. To save battery power, many were fitted with a switch to turn off the dashboard lights, including the Frogeye. I got a carpet kit from British Victoria, and the carpets that go in the footwell don't go all the way to the top (ex - the drivers side stops at dimmer switch). Is this how the carpets are supposed to be? If not, has anyone gotten carpets anywhere that worked well? Thanks Bob rlirwin@... 561... MORE

I've JPEG photo'd some shots of the 'Mk2' relay system I made for the '72. Made the wiring loom up from a 1500 loom to suit the odd-ball chassis/engine combination. Would be willing to make up a complete kit of parts to just "plug-in" to a Midget, using new parts ordered from here in the UK if anyone wants one. Also includes fused relays in waterproof cases and a multi-60amp fuse system to help prevent fire in the event of a crash. Cost me about 50 to make the 'super loom' section from the switches all the way to... MORE

Hi K.C. Great news, and well done. The only thing is I am not sure if it is available here in the UK, but now you have given me a brand name I am in with a good chance if it is. Thanks again + best regards Dave take long. If the stuff you're looking for is be it is edave@... 542... MORE

I bought a new A-H Sprite mkIV shell a couple of years ago from Heritage via Moss. Panels did not align and MIG welds used to fill mis-alignment gaps. The bolts used for the bonnet hinges were 7 AF thread and 1 metric. (Chewed threads in captive nut!) I was not impressed and am fortunate that I have time, garage space, tools and gas axe to enjoy this 'fine example of a Heritage Quality Part'. (For US readers - this is British irony at is best; for Aus readers - this is another whinging Pom; for UK readers -... MORE

Chris The 185 X 60 X 13 tyres will fit but you may have to modify the rear arches a little by jacking them out by around 20mm to be safe, you should be able to get a good idea from your old 175's the 185 is not much wider. The Yokohama O32R is a fantastic tyre, it does have a short life span but grip is great, the only thing I will say is that if your suspension is a bit tired or not uprated you may find the handling a bit snatchy, as the tyres may have... Looks like BMW may have plans to revive the Big Healeys along with the Mini. Cut & paste the link below to see article & photo at MiniMania website. http://www.minimania.com/ArticleV.cfm?DisplayID=1088&SCatagory=Factory&Display Type=News I believe BMW retained certain British car maker brand names, including Austin - but who owns the Healey name? Still owned by the family? What could BMW call a car that is obviously a updated Healey expect Healey. Austin by itself just doesn't create the same sport car image. Ted, I have used www.ahspares.co.uk for my quarter panels and the lower section of the rear. For the rocker panels and floor pans Moss Motors. The metal thickness has been excellent in comparison to the replacement parts I have seen for honda's chevy's and fords. I also picked up the spring hanger boxes, and inner and outer bulkhead replacements from Moss. Best of luck Bob Tampa, FL 60 AN5 MTGBRKR1@... 519... MORE

Hi folks, Firstly, thanks to those who gave advice on the compresion test, I shall now try and determine what cylinder head I have. I have now started striping the sprite ready for some body, engine work and respray.I plan on having it all complete in six weeks, and hopefully some of you will be able to see the results during the year. Does any one have any recomendations for suppliers of the best replacement body pannels. Inner and outer sills, spring hangers, bits of floor and front wing etc. The aspects I am considering are quality of fit,... MORE

Hi Ho, These details only apply to a 1972 1275 UK spec model. You may be able to do similar to others but you need to check first. I did not destroy any of the original equipment so I can always revert to as built condition. Later 1275 midgets 1973/4 had alternators as standard. I suggest you read it all first and make sure you understand it. Perhaps even take off your regulator box and identify what you will have to do. Well I did say FULL instructions, didn't I. Sorry! Checks to do first The regulator box is... MORE

Hi Got these sussed out now. The relays I have are the standard ones used today for heated rear windows, fog lamps etc. They cost me about 4 each. I am locating them behind the grill, drivers side, taped on a little bracket retained by bolts already there. Wiring them up is simply a case of making up some short leads with the appropiate connectors on the ends, a mixture of bullet connectors for the original wiring and lucas spade connectors for the relays, then pulling the wiring apart and reconnecting it. All the connectors are available from Halfords.... MORE

Hi All works OK. Car now charges battery at tickover. I modified a burnt out regulator box to change the wiring over so I did not have to cut the original wiring. The existing plugs simply go onto the modified regulator. One extra wire is needed, the sense wire for the alternator. Luckily my car had a spare tag in the right place, on the battery terminal of the starter solenoid. Full details and a digital picture of the modified box if wanted.
