Weel a Sprite I wouldn't have had an alternator originally so that's a POs wiring. Basically you need 3 wires: a thin one to drive the ignition warning light a medium one that's monitors the battery voltage (and also I think provides the current for the field coils and a big fat one to return charging current to the battery. Check out a manual for which goes to which on the alternator. I could tell you but my Sprite is 250 miles away. Incidentally, to slightly hijack your thread, can someone explain why the sense and charge wire are... MORE

Don't know what the confussion is. Just a case of semantics. It's a '65 Sprite with a fiberglass bugeye/frogeye bonnet. From the engine bay shot and interior shot it looks like a well thought out conversion. Everything looks neat and tidy, no half-a**ed work. The price on the other hand and wether it will actually do 160 mph are questionable. Should be a very spirited driver! I am installing a rebuilt Lucas alternator (17ACR) in my Bugeye. Also re-wiring system to add additional fuse block & terminals. The 3 wires on the alternator (Black, Yellow & Yellow/Green) do not match any wiring diagrams I have. Black is thickest (10gauge?), Yellow is about 14 g, & Yellow/green is aprox. 16 gauge. Any suggestions as to how to cinnect these 3 color wires into system? TIA Jim Rogers San Juan Capistrano Jim Rogers 18260... MORE

Hi, Gerard, That may explain the cut off lifter rod stuffed way up in the hose to the air pump I discovered on the 69. :-) If I recall correctly had the same offer on my (was) 76 Volvo 242DL. Funny thing is it always passed smog with very low emissions recorded. How did you like that great weather yesterday? The 72 I looked at yesterday was in worse shape than the wonderful 63 you turned me onto. The guy is in for a reality check. As I posted later the seller had taken is as part payment for... MORE

Well....quiet now, so..... That was rather beautifully put together Chuck 'n Tex!! That's right. Yesterday's kids didn't have to worry about becoming crime victims, either, to the extent they might today. In Stamford, CT. anyway, a kid was safe. Any adult would basically help anyone's kid out, really. People have strange idea's of what things are worth. I still can't get my head round the fact that really nicely restored Spridgets aren't worth much more than 5,000 GBP (7,500 bucks) which is often way less than the sum of the parts that went into restoring them - I'm not even talking labour costs here! I know many Spridget restorers do so for the sheer pleasure and enjoyment (don't laugh) they get out of restoring and returning one of these lovely little cars to the road. But why the relatively low value? Supply and demand usually dictate prices... MORE

Saw a local ad for a 72 rwa Midget for sale. Seeing that is was very close by I simply had to go take a look knowing full well I could not buy it. I called the guy and ran over to look at it. Found it sitting in a parking lot behind the Circus pub covered over. First clue that it may not be all that great was a low tire peeking out from the covering. Owner arrived and pulled off the covering and I tried not to roll my eyes toward heaven and laugh. Orange of that... MORE

I view it much more simply. The average 'buyer' is a 'first lbc' buyer. We 'listers' buy cars...but we know how to restore them ourselves. If you've got the money to have someone else restore them... those people really don't bother with the 'lists' for info. They simply throw money at them and let someone else do it (restore them) AS far as the 'prices' go... I've yet to sell an LBC for less than what I had in it. (after resto or just reselling one). I've simply waited for those 'money throwers' to come my way before I'll... MORE

Make your own. The best backing for them is oil tempered hard board. It keeps its shape better. Most of the kits I have seen only use a type of cardboard. Oil tempered is more moisture resistant than ordinary hardboard. Also I used the originals as patterns. Not all the available kits are right for a particular car. MG under Mr Thornleys's direction (I think) were very good at using up all the stock or changing before the official change points. For the west cost folks who missed it there will be a repeat of "Modern Marvels" "The history of gasoline is traced. Included: the development of cleaner burning gasoline." at 7:00 pm Pacific standard time. I suspect that will mean a 10:00 pm repeat on the east coast. Don "Don May" 18126... MORE

The easiest, and necessarily most expensive, route to go would be to locate the material you wish to use and have a trimmer recover your seats. I did this on the restoration of my Pink '63 Sprite and the cost was roughly the same for a first class job as it would have cost me to buy ready-made kits. jay fishbein wallingford, ct http://home.ix.netcom.com/~type79/ type79@... 18055... Sounds like you might have messed up one of the gear assemblies, but the only way to find ot is to dismantle it, using the factory manual for preference. Sorry, I can't help there, I do have a factory manual, but only for the mark 2 Midget, with the old spring clutch rather than the easier later diaphram clutch. As to what has happened, whatever has happened to the clutch hydraulics, the clutch lining will also have fixed itself to the flywheel pretty thoroughly by now and you are best off breaking that joint by splitting the gearbox from... Jeremy Those parcel shelves seem to have a mind of their own don't they; but why ply? I think if I was going to do away with the fibreboard, I'd make one up out of steel sheet spray it in crinkle paint to match the dashboard and re-attach the crash rail. I'm not sure I'd want to do that though due to it not being OE, I'll have to ponder this one. I'll try cleaning them in soapy water and spraying them afterwards - thanks for this tip. You're right Nigel, Biscuit was never offered on a 67. I don't know what i tis, I just hate the black interior. I want to paint the exterior red and biscuit would go very well with it. I guess I have to decide how "original" I want it... Making them myself would be a lot of work, especially the edge stitching. I would probably buy a set if I decide to go with this color. Willy Thanks a lot for this link, I spoke to a very helpful person from autosparks this afternoon re a Gan-5 =3D=0D Mk3 Midget rear loom and he gave me prices for a rear loom and full loom which were: Rear =A326.94 Full =A3134.40 Both plus VAT@... % and carriage. He also said he would put a catalogue in the post for me. And that they did =3D=0D do the separate coloured wires if I wanted to make one up myself, although it =3D=0D may not work out much cheaper, not sure if he was just saying that or... MORE

Thanks David, It is a great consolation to me. I can accept if the car had the existing problem or was so on the verge of one that it failed, the old straw that broke the camels back, but would have been very angry at myself had I actually caused the problem by doing something stupid. I told myself that when this car was given to me it would be an opportunity to learn. It looked awful at first and I expected sitting 22 years had taken its toll. There was no way it was going to be a... MORE

Nigel, If I were close by I would certainly be happy to look at it. As a point of curiosity why are you re-wiring? My experience is that it's usually not the wire that is at fault rather oxidation on the connectors and that is a matter of cleaning and repairing wire ends that strands of wires have broken at connectors. Other than that there is the problem of previous owners adding and subtracting stuff then leaving strange unmarked or non color coded wires dangling about. In the electrical section of the Haynes and Bentley manuals there are wiring... MORE
