How big of a mig welder do I need for bodywork? I'm looking for an affordable but reliable welder for my 67 Sprite restoration. Thanks in advance. "yucholian " 17873... MORE

This is the 69 I was given that had not been started for 22 years. I have been working on the engine and now have it running but the clutch master and slave need to be rebuilt and it also looks like the clutch needs work but it is engaged and I have been running the car in neutral and on blocks. I had started it before while in gear and on blocks with no problem in any of the gears. Today I tried that again in fourth. I had forgot to release the emergency brake and it tried... MORE

Don steps up onto his soap box. I happen to like fruitcake, not all fruitcake but there are some mighty fine ones made. In my lifetime I have see it go from a joyous holiday treat to the butt of cruel jokes against it and those who happen to like it forcing many with frail egos into the fruitcake closet. So what does fruitcake and Lucas electrical products have in common? The way I see it they are both "in" things to bash. Is all fruit cake good . . . of course not nor is all Lucas products... MORE

"By the way, it's metallic blue. Just need to polish it up and add that white racing stripe, maybe :)!" No maybe's, Paul. Do it to it. I already know how great it's gonna look, especially with the "triple" stripe (one 1" on each side of a suitably "thick" middle one), with semi-gloss black rockers and semi-gloss black rear & front ends below the bumper line. Bring those paint lines right around to the fender wells, front and back and you have a copy of my PO'd '74 RWA Midget in the exact colors!! :) It'll look great. This... MORE

Ed is correct. I have an original '61 SWA Sprite and the vinyl used for the seats is of a different grain than that used for the panels. In mine the vinyl used for lining the door pockets is a different grain than that used for the panels and the seats. There is some variation in color between the three types of vinyl used. Hey Eduardo!! Good to hear from you on this as you are in the business and you ought to know. I mean, if you don't, who does? :) Definitely looks like Nigel and Willy have a larger field of choice in the matter with respect to what is commercially available at reasonable prices, then. And with no intent to argue the point, I am not so sure that this does not apply to Bugeyes, Ed. I am thinking back to the originals I saw in the show rooms when they first came out. I don't recall the Leaf Green... MORE

Hi, Willy...off-list for this stuff! While Jeremy is well-intended to be sure, I think he is simply "young", eh? :) Sports & Classics 203-655-8731 "John" is the owner and the guy who "knows". If a female anwers, that would be his wife. She "knows stuff" but John is "the man". His lovely and gracious wife is more the office manager and a very efficient one she is. Helluva nice lady. Nice girl in all ways with a great sense of humor. Former AA flight attendant. John has been a very happy man since meeting and marrying her!! :) But... MORE

-Hi Nigel I am not an expert on this, as I only have the one experience with my bugeye. But let me share with you, and any one else on list that would like to hear some things. I purchased an interior kit from moss, when it came I was very disappointed in it. The grain on some of the pieces in the kit didn't match others, nor did the color. (Green) I toyed with the product for weeks before I decided to send it back, it just wasn't the quality I expected for the money (seem to remember... MORE

just thought I would bring this to your attention. Posted 17 January 2003 Saw a RWA 1973 Midget on the street today with a sun-faded for sale sign on it. Price was $3500 (crossed out), $3000 (crossed out), written next.."Best Offer". Looks like original medium blue paint and scruffy tan interior. New: top, tires, clutch & (1275)engine rebuild. Wire wheels, good chrome and grill. With quick inspection little rust was evident. Looks like a good car to start with. I didn't talk to the seller and am in no way related. G'day Mark et al The first time I did a gearbox rebuild (maybe 30 years ago) I used a non-factory manual, and I seem to remember it was Haines. I ended up with 2 springs and plungers left over. Could have been my inexperience of course. But I later compared the manual I had used with the factory Manual and found them to be almost word-for-word ..... except for the entire paragraph missing about where to put these springs and plungers. I couldn't suggest more strongly that you use the official factory Manual, for this and any other jobs... MORE

Ed is, as always, spot on correct. Tighten up the bolts a tad first. I think it must help allow a bit of lubricant into the start of the thread so that is doesn't lock up. I nearly always use that move as a matter of course, except on highly stressed studs like on the cylinder head. It is worth saying that the rust makes the bolts 'swell' and so it is often worthwhile to do something about that first, either with a wire brush or some sort of fine file to clean out the 'valleys' in the thread,... correct, nearly all of yooze Definately 1972 UK market original. Aftermarket steering wheel , on the right side. cigar lighter, not an extra pull switch I'm not sure if they are extra rocker switches, or just been moved to accomodate the extra gauge(in a box somewhere in the garage) MG wings clipped and moved Horrible, horrible, scotchlok clips used to splice wiring. Gearbox and engine already removed by PO,(deceased) so at the moment I don't know how good or bad they are. This car will never be concours. Now do I restore the dashboard as this, or return to... Don Not sure if this will help you, but I've often found that using a heat gun rather than a blow torch helps, when theres a risk of things catching fire. Those heat guns hardware stores sell for stripping paint off wood. Its worked for me in the past - also invaluable for softening underseal to scrape off, without it catching fire. Just a suggestion. Thanks Nigel, and all who responded. Seeing that I have a good paint stripping heat gun I will give that a try in after a few days of soaking in the penetrating oil that is on them now. Never occurred to me to try it, but knowing how hot it gets seems like a good suggestion. Don "Don May" 17761... MORE

I am with you Don, I too have the usual assortment of wiring patches and other "modifications" made by a PO. My personal favorite is the brass water shutoff valve in place of the original heater control on the engine ( http://community.webshots.com/photo/57389486/58018693Tjluy ). Look right behind the valve cover. And then there was the insulation. Once I took up the green shag (now mostly brown) carpet, there was all sorts of insulation glued everywhere ( http://community.webshots.com/album/58009407jkipdv ). Even had the seats mounted on plywood and insulation under them. I thought the ceiling tiles glued in little pieces behind the... MORE

Willy I had a Heritage Certificate trace run in 1992, it is definately worth having, as it confirmed the correct colour of my car to be Blue Royale and not Teal Blue as I had originally assumed. I have uploaded a scan of my certificate onto the midgetsprite yahoo webpage in the dashboard. . directory as hc.jpg if you'd like a look. I'm sorry about the distortion on the jpg, but ive rescanned and uploaded it several times and its something yahoo is doing, it seems it doesn't like large jpg's. I've removed personal information for obvious reasons and... MORE

Repeated from the tail end of thread Nr 10 midgetsprite issue 1055 for those that missed it ************************* British Heritage Trust, Gaydon Warwickshire UK Something a lot more worrying is the possible break up of the collection world land speed record holder MG car collection plus many MG prototypes, first and last MG production cars etc and possibly the MG Heritage records from the Heritage Museum at Gaydon. And more than that has anyone done it on a Bugeye? $40.00 dollars doesnt seem to bad, but if... MORE

One of the annoying, but often challenging, things about restoration is figuring out what crimes against Spridgets the previous PO's or their mechanics have committed. So far I have discovered . . . Three of the green wires cut and left dangling at the fuse block. A couple of other wires in the area of the fuse block cut. Washers welded to the end of the clutch push rod. Bolt part welded to the end of the clutch cylinder push rod. A small switch mounted on the side of the Steering cowl to? A mass of cut wires in... MORE

yes, the early UK radio consoles were different and now rare as rocking horse proverbial! I have been trying to find an original one for my '74 round wheel arch car and I think I've NEVER seen one except in books! They were much narrower than the US (and later 1500 type) being only the width of a standard radio at the bottom, then widening slightly to the top, so there was no room for extra switches, only the radio and speaker. I suspect your 1971 model would have had the same type. As has been noted elsewhere, the... MORE
