I've just been talking to our oil sales rep . This was in regards to my vintage motorcycle but might also apply to Spridgets and frogeyes etc. I told him that I had put a 10/50 multigrade oil in the bike ' as a treat'. He asked me if it had any brass or phos. bronze bushes in it , yep, cam bushes and in the gearbox I said. He suggested that I removed it ASAP, because the additives in modern multigrades leach out a constituent of the phos. bronze and effectively destroys it. I have also found this... MORE

Thanks everyone. Some reason, I'm having difficulty finding one though. Either they are too narrow, or too short (have walls around) or too big to tow with a Silverado 1/2 ton. Even got into an arguement with a rental guy over it. Just might have to hire a tow truck. Tranny is stuck on 3rd. I'm excited to finally get my project car though. It's a 67 Sprite with a rebuilt engine. Body's OK except a rust hole on the rear driver's side. Interior isn't too bad, yet. We'll see after I take the carpet out. "Yuchol Kim" 14978... MORE

I was going to ask how well it runs when the tank is nearly empty, but I don't suppose you've managed to get that far! It's unusual but it sounds like the pick-up pipe in the tank isn't reaching down far enough - next time you've run the tank down as far as it'll go, disconnect the petrol pipe from the carb and let it run into a jam jar or something, and see if it's sucking air. (you can also check if the pump itself is delivering a good flow of petrol - if you go by the... MORE

Yep. This seems to be the case, and mine is newly rebuilt and still, it does this. I am not saying that MTL may be the only synthetic lubricant out there that will minimize this, 'cause I haven't tried them all....just Mobile 1. Further, while this seems to work in today's summer temperatures, I don't know this will be the case to the same extent, as winter makes itself known in these parts. I just figure it'll minimize the problem, temperature notwithstanding, in any event. I think the fact Redline makes this stuff particularly for this application with the... MORE

Dad has a TR4 and the rumour in Triumph circles is that any panels that could not be made to fit in the factory went to the parts dept! Perhaps it was the same with engines, 'oops that one won't start pull it out and paint it gold, next please!'. jeremy.cogman@... 14877... MORE

I am Bob and Dave, You know what makes me so mad is they send out crap and I end up taking my time having to contact them, package, and send them back. I have come to hate the standard sweet reply . . . Oh, send them back we will refund your money . . . what about all the frustration, the delay in my work on the car and my time to package and send them back? What about the ethics of misrepresenting an item in a catalogue? Grrrrrrrrrrr. The old Scorpio is ready to sting. Don... MORE

Hey SWAGsters and other Bay Area listers. I've gone to this event the last three years and it's a blast. It really is a picnic and you there are actually BBQ in the meadow for publuc use. There is everything from daily driver's to concourse, hot rods, street rods classic and vintage from Model T up to about 1972. Last year there were several BMW Isettas and a few other foreign makes from Abarth to Morris Minor. Datsun Roadsters usually have a big showing too. Jimmy's OLD CAR PICNIC in Golden Gate Park. Steve, the factory manual says you can do it like you said - you need to take the radiator out first though, and unless you have an "18G1044 Engine Front Cover Centralizer", you should put the pulley in through the seal before you put the timing cover back, to centralize it. Never done it myself in the car though. David "David Jacobs" 14835... MORE

I ordered a side entry distributor ignition wire set from Victoria British. The illustration on page 115 item 8-292 shows a set of wires with termination caps for the spark plugs. Today they arrived and all they are is a set of cut lengths of wire stuck through rubber boots, no terminals on the spark plug end just straight cut off wire. I have a side feed distributor cap so cut ends are called for on that end. My old set of wires have only a couple of ohms of resistance, and have stranded wire conductors. The new wire... MORE

for the meet. Hope to meet some listers there. I remember about a year ago I was corresponding with lister Roy Rogers in Florida about attending the Classic in Lynchburg, TN and meeting and having a beer. Neither of us got to follow through and attend. Listers may remember that Roy was killed later, in December, in a car crash. I hope to see some of you guys there. Should be a really big event with a super autocross/funkhana on Saturday and my Tennessee winding mountain backroad Rally on Friday preceded by the Car Show. And just 10 miles... MORE

The factory manual only says the nominal size - 7" It doesn't give a maximum diameter tolerance, but I'm sure I've seen it actually cast into the metal, inside the drum itself. While you've got the drums off, you can check the handbrake linkages that contact the brake shoes for wear (NOT just the clevis pin holes, you need to check the pivots and the ends that bear against the shoes). Martyn, where I come from the terms for some of the body working materials are a bit different, but I think your glazing compound is a bit like our 2 pack polyester stopper (very thin bondo type material for filling small imperfections). If this is the same material, you will need a primer filler over it before you can apply any paint over it, as the base & clear will sink straight into the glazing compound. Martyn: I do not know exactly what you are using specifically, but most fillers are porous so you'd probably want to "fill it" with a primer filler/sealer/surfacer...whatever! :) Be patient and keep doing it "right" because your patience will pay off in a "uniform" finish when the paint goes on. Hope it comes out beautifully 'cause I've BTDT and I know it's a lotta work to get it "right". 99.5% is "prep". Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 14806... MORE

I change the condenser on the car, and when I started the car to see if it made any difference, I noticed a noise that didn't sound quite right. Curious, I pulled the valve cover and started the car. I see that no. 8 valve is not opening or closing. The push rod is in the up position, so the cam does not appear to be rounded. What can I do to get this to move again, or is this a rebuild situation?? Brad Brad Fornal 14771... MORE

Well, David- These were "stock" cars but, I think you are correct in your thinking with respect to cam timing (overlap) in any event! :) Man, it was fun to see the expression on their faces when that potatoe left the exhaust system and "split" at high speed with a helluva "boom". The "victim" would literally jump about a foot off the seat! Now I've beome a "responsible adult" and can't "play" that way anymore..... "inappropriate behaviour"!! How boring!! :) Sometimes I wanna "go back to the future"! Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 14750... MORE

DCOE or SU "upgrade". When properly tuned for the application (and I am talking very "generally" here 'cause I am aware of the many "variables" which could concievably make for exceptions!) and all else being equal: The "fixed venturi" DCOE carb. will usually provide better top end...as opposed to the latter "variable venturi" SU type which usually provides superior bottom end and mid-range torque. Cam utilized can obviously be chosen (in a general sort of way) to "match" whichever carb. you choose. Depends upon application, also. (A cam with Sprint timing isn't a wise choice for the "street"!:) Fr'instance,... MORE

Well, I thought it was a good idea, can understand why you wouldn't want to fly on your time off, now you will have to spend 8 hours driving up with all the excitement I-5 has to offer.
