Got nothing to do with 18 year old driver...Hell, I'm 59 and broke mine in 4th gear at 30mph...'course that was preceeded by lots of 18 yearish drag races. Seriously, these shafts break anyway. Get later ones, PN BTA806. They're the factory improved (better material) ones. "tloutrec" 9439... MORE

I'll be in Malta from the 7th to the 13th of April on business so I'll be off the list during that time. Of course, I'll be looking for LBCs in my free time while I'm there. I've got both my cameras so I'll be taking photos for the magazines I write for if I find any interesting cars. Malta was a British colony, and they drive on the right, so I'm hopeful. I'm also thinking of taking some photos of empty roads, cobblestone streets, harbor quays, etc and superimposing shots of my race car over them. That may... MORE

Can anyone help locate 1969 (G) MG Midget SKID 263G? Last whereabouts Southport ca. 1990. Main features: Modified engine; RWA (should be square at that age!); de-bumpered. One (of many!) pictures at: http://www.lestac.co.uk/mg/skd263g.jpg Thanks, Simon "Simon Worby" 9348... MORE

Mike, Thanx for the reply, I didn't know you Yanks raced midgets, I thought you just polished and talked about them. :o) :o) I thought that I had replied to you, but can't find a copy in my sent item file. At the moment I've got two 1275 engines on the bench in my garage. Both reputedly to be good. But want to try them out before fitting one of them into the car. I've not seen or heard either of them running , an they've both been standing , out a the car for several years. The engine... MORE

True. Not a one. There was, however, this fiat 124 I had once that could have/should have been introduced to an ax or sledge. As an auto - it made a fair 'flower pot'. Twas a road rock for sure. And my lack of ezaps in the last few days is a direct result of having my 74 back running. rebuilt trans, carbs.. still have the 'sputtt-sputt' before it (the car) has decided its ok to move. Few more days of serious interference by me, to it- and then its on the mgb..have the 5.0L running- ready to mate... MORE

Peter: My name is Jeffrey Holmes. I live in Spartanburg, SC. I've earned my living as a chemical engineer/metallurgist, specializing in plating and heat treating, for almost forty years. I am afraid I have to at least partially take issue with your comments about rust and caliper failure. While some calipers use pistons coated with soft materials like cadmium plating or phosphate coating, Spridget calipers have hard chrome plated pistons, and I have seen many leaking and stuck calipers in which the chrome plating on the piston was in fine condition. I have twice rebuilt the calipers in my... MORE

Yeah call me crazy. The Midget should be running in about a month. The Mini PU awaits a lot of floor panel welding but should see progress once the Midget gets its Kent cam, Kenlowe, Alden Yellow, Datsun 5speed, and a set of progressive valve springs I got in the UK ten years ago. Still looking for an LCB for LHD and 1.5s Third in line is the faithful Austin 1300/America that served me so faithfully all those years when it was all I had. Right rear seat cut out so I could carry my standup string bass, what... MORE

You can put a 'B' engine in if you really want to BUT a good 1275 is far better. The handling and space needed for the 'B' gear box is enormous. The weight of the thing causes brakes and handling problems. Aside It was with a rebuilt (by me) B engine (in a GT) that I first travelled at 100mph on the road - frightened myself silly though. 2 miles a minute in the new mini cooper is an absoloute doddle though. Brett When I rebuilt my 1500 I went to .20 over flat top pistons, milled the head .080, TSI 275-4 cam, Weber DGV and Monza header and exhaust. Works real good. Doug 77 Michigan Doug Pletcher 9186... MORE

Gerard or Rob, do either of you know if a 1798 from a MGB will or would fit in a midget. A guy has one he rebuilt for his car, but ordered another high performance engine instead(tax return..lol) Id love to put it in, if it is feasable...Thanx! ~Rob 66' Midget "babyblumg" 9168... MORE

Hmmmm! These would be interesting to see, Mike, G. just for the sake of education; so if you should feel so inclined, I'd appreciate your sending the numbers my way. Always interested in this stuff! The alum. head is supposed to flow 30% more than the stock 1275 cast iron number but I haven't seen any figures on this, either. Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 9183... MORE

Coming a bit late to this thread, but here's another piece of information about the "K" series. This did indeed replace the A+ in the Metro - it became the "Rover 100" in the process. The "K" series also powers the MG "F" and "TF". (The "F" was based around the clever Hydragas suspension from the Metro - clever, but too difficult to make it work reliably in the longer term for a sportscar. They ditched the suspension and replaced it with coils, gave it a facelift and called it "TF") Anyway, although the "K" seires is a completely... MORE

Thank you. The car was bought new in Sept '60. It didn't matter then, so I don't have a clue as to commission number. It was beige, red interior, black top. Hated the color, but it was the only one in stock at the time, and I couldn't wait. Had it repainted red in early '62. Ah, you remind me what a thrill that car was. My previous ride was Dad's '58 Ford wagon, which you see in the background. Although the Ford, which was a 332 V8, was fast in a straight line, the Sprite was amazing, truly... MORE

Oh, man, Mike K! This is embarrassing!! (Turning red in facial color) I am not knowing, for I went over to Datsun 5 speeds years ago and cannot recall. Considering your question, though, I bet it's Whitworth (or whatever they call that). Where is the Chinese/Korean bashing Frankster when we need him? Where??!! It's like trying to find a cop when you need him!! Well, Gerard should be on shortly. It's 0715 in his part of town, right now........ (probably still sacked out, countin' sheep) anybody out there who knows the answer to this? HELP!!!!!!! Cap'n. Bob '60 :{)... MORE

Alan East-Jones: I prefer a well lubed rack but clean nipples. Of course, that's just me! (By the way, all, "Happy Rabbit"!) I used grease for many, many years for the exact same reason: the damn thing had a grease nipple on it so I "greased" it!! Logical? Of course. Same with my MGB's, etc. Never had a worn rack or steering rack problem, ever. So I absolutely agree with your thinking on this 'cause it works!! And your thinking as to a "sump" for oil I agree with also, but that's exactly why you "fill" the boots. On... MORE

Bill, Palo Alto is back on this year, but I think this type of show may be getting harder and harder sustain. The popularity of car shows these days are attracting promtoters that can make big donations for making space and time available. Makes it hard on the smaller promoters who are primarily doing it out of their enthusiasm for the hobby. I hope tha Palo Alto meet survives too. Gerard "gerardchateau" 9139... MORE

well, all the check was to no avail, my oil pump went out and I either need to rebuild, or get a rebuilt. Anyone know a good supplier of 1275 or 1300 "A" engines? Pls. let me know! ~Rob 66' BabyBlu Midget "babyblumg" 9138... MORE

has anyone come up with a viable aftermarket 5 speed tranny for the 1500's? can someone explain how the spitfire o/d would work. are there any complications or problems that might prohibit this modification. any info greatly appreciated jay "jayb1967" 9134... MORE

Well, Tim- It could be a number of things not necessarily carb related. (ether either, ether either, either ether...I can't do it!!) Peter C. of nosimport states: "90% of carb. problems are electrical". Amen to this!! "My engine is difficult to start when cold" does not contain enough specific information for me to work with to "trouble shoot" with any decent chance of reasonable accuracy at my experience level. Now I just walked in from dinner and I see Gerard has already answered your post so he's already hit the basics on SU's. And he has said it all,... MORE

Bill, I just went through this, I used an extra gauge light socket and bulb, stu ck the bullet connetor under the distributer wire cover and linned up #1 cy linder to TDC. Rotate the dist. untill the light goes on. This gets the tim ming close. Don't forget to center the fine tunning adjustment thumb screw on the dist. Get some bright paint and make a mark on the pully when you fi nd that elusive notch. I put some paint on the top of the timming cover and the pully, so I didn't have to lay on... MORE

Bill- This is why the "timing marks" are "on top" on my new Rivergate motor; it was actually a condition of them building it!! You see, having the timing marks "on the bottom" was part if a "revenge" thing, a "commie-pinko" type of plot. This is what the British did to get even with us for "breaking away" in the first place and winning "that" war in the second place. They produce this neat little car and drive us nuts with Lucas electrics and timing marks in the most ludicrous of places. (Could you find a more ridiculous spot... MORE

Hi Tim You sound jussst like me, I'm in the same position right now. Mine has been an ongoing project for many years,(on and off) I have also done almost all of my own work. Except for body and paint done about 18 years ago. Mine came with a 948cc, It now has a 1275. Ribcase gearbox, front disc brakes, heater and slot for a radio. I have attempted to refurbush/renew most parts on the car. It seems to run very well although I need to get it out oon the open road to really see what's going on.. Right... MORE

Paul, If you want to clean them up and continue to use them, try applying some phosphoric acid to them. It will remove the rust and even some of the finer pits and won't harm the chrome inless you let it dry on them. Keep them wet untill the rust is dissolved and then rinse well with water and dry. You'll be surprised at the results. You can send attachments to this list (not the Spridgets auto-x list) and you can also post in the photos section if you go to the Yahoo Groups web site. Stock tires are... MORE
