I'd suggest that brake calipers and drums get too hot for powder coating. Powder coating melts at relatively low temperatures (thats how they make it stick to stuff) There are other, more appropriate coatings for brake components- similar to powder coating, but ceramic based. Try asking at race , hotrod , or aeronautical components suppliers. Alternatively you can buy 'brake caliper paint' in spray cans- sometimes its pretty good but usually its disappointing. Good luck! Bill K&N do an air filter kit for Sprites and Midgets much as you describe with cast aluminium plates either side of a large oval K&N filter. The plate that bolts to the carbs has stub stacks/ram pipes moulded into it. There is no reason why what you suggest shouldn't work (with Pilot Bob's amendments about stub stacks/ram pipes). You may also have to change your carb needles as K&N's flow more air than standard filters. James "jamesbilsland" 7242... MORE

"But that has never kept me from speaking out before"! Nor should it, Bill! However, getting back to two carbs "sharing" the K&N: Assuming it is one of the "large" oval type filters, completely open all around it's circumference, with "plates" on either side; I do not see the problem as this filter should flow more air than what two 1&1/4 SU's feeding four cylinders in normal, stock operation will require, most likely, considering this type is used on 2 barrel 45 DCOE's and the like. I am talking about the filter which is 4&1/2 by 7. What will... MORE

The subject lines sums it all up!! Left this morning at 7:15 and drove into Dallas to Smiley's racing to attend a swap meet for race car parts. Much of what I saw there was dirt track related but many parts have good applications for the Drag Sprite. I had intended to hook up with Richard Wright from the Spridget list, but since I hadn't talked with him about where we should meet up and what we were wearing, it just wasn't looking to promising. While inside Smiley's, I called my wife on the cell phone to see if... MORE

Did you know, in the mighty British Navy at the time of Empire building, every sailing ship had cannon (the plural of cannon) for protection. Cannon of the times required round iron cannonballs. A ship's master wanted to store the cannonballs such that they could be available for instant use when needed, but in a manner that would not let them roll around the gun deck. The solution devised was to stack them up in a square-based pyramid next to the cannon. The top level of the stack had one ball, the next level down had three, the next... MORE

I am not 100% sure of the sixe but I do beleive it ot be a 10 inch fan. I mounted it as a pusher to clean up the engine compartment and besides, it fit like it was a factory installation. With it in front of the radiator it sure makes it easy to replace the belt too... Rick Acosta Las Vegas, Nevada 1973 MG Midget acostahr@... "Hugh Acosta" 7119... MORE

8-Step Guide For The Home Spridget Mechanic: 1. If you can't find a screwdriver, use a knife. If you break off the tip, you now have a screwdriver. 2. Above all, if what you've done is stupid, but it works, then it isn't stupid. 3. If it's electronic, get a new one...or consult a twelve year old. 4. Stay simple minded: Get a new battery; replace the bulb or fuse; see if the tank is empty; try turning the switch or just paint over it. 5. Always take credit for miracles. CNN Headline News did a short news listing regarding Ford and GM's contributions to the relief and recovery efforts in New York and Washington. The findings are as follows...... 1. Ford- $1 million to American Red Cross matching employee contributions of the same number plus 10 Excursions to NY Fire Dept. The company also offered ER response team services and office space to displaced government employees. This doesn't even include the Rangers and Explorers "loaned" out of Edison Assembly Plant's stock within days of the attack. 2. Listers, thanks for the info on 1275 backplates. I'm taking the opportunity presented by a cracked backplate to convert to a 5-speed. To help off-set the cost, I'm selling a professionally rebuilt MKII 948. Any advice on fair market value? The MKII is different than the Bugeye 948, mostly changes in the head (double valve springs, larger valves? and carbs). Does the rarity of the MKII translate to the engine as well? schicmg@... 7088... MORE

Hi all, I=B4m having trouble locating an engineering firm that is conversant with midget motors. I recently spoke with a firm in Nijmegen who are specialised in mini a-series engines, but didn=B4t want to touch my midget engine. The minimum work I=B4m looking for is boring, honing and placing the piston s and conrods and crank. I plan to do the rest myself. However if they=B4re good I=B4ll spend the ex tra money on them for a complete rebuild. I hope to hear some suggestions! Cheerio Olgierd MK3 "Hubertine & Olgierd" 7040... MORE

Matthew, I don't think you can make any visible engine modification like changing the carb while still under smog requirements. unless I'm mistaken, most shops will refuse to test if equipments has been changed. I had a guy refuse to smog my '75 after noticing that the car had been retrofitted with an extra vacuum switch that was not connected. It was a recall on early cars, but really wasn't necessary, but wouldn't do it because it was disconnected. I'm not an expert in this area, so someone correct me if I'm wrong. However, that said, the 1500 engines... MORE

Well, I have been pretty quiet for about a year, but now I have a bit of time to introduce myself. My name id Matthew Pfeil. I origanally bought my 1976 Midget from a friend who was moving to Australia back in 1995. It was not running and I pretty much took it off his hands. It was origanally red when I bought. I was having problems getting it to pass California' Smog law so another friend took it off my hands and we both worked on it for about a year. After a while he got bored of... MORE

Hi Dwheil I had exactly the same problem with my 66 Sprite when I first got it. I took the tach out opened it up and located a variable resister (pot) inside. By marking the position of the screwdriver slot and trial and error adjustments and test drives at 30mph, 60mph and normal idle I managed to calibrate it in about half an hour. I think (from memory) for a standard 1098 engine and box fitted with standard ratio diff 1000 revs equates to 16.4 mph. Look on the Midget & Sprite web site or ask the list if... MORE

OK listers, here's an unusual one. I am in need of a back plate for a 1275. After pulling the motor today to chase down a bad throwout bearing, I noticed a hairline crack near a back plate bolt. Removing the flywheel confirmed my suspicions, a crack clear across the back plate. I don't have a history with this motor, having received it in a parts car. It runs great and is in fine shape otherwise, but I think the motor may have been dropped at some point. Anyway, are there any suppliers that would stock a back plate?... MORE

Putting things back together is EASY. You're not scared of a jigsaw puzzle, are you John? A transmission is just a 124-piece spring-loaded 3-dimensional jigsaw puzzle. If you put it back together wrong it simply wont work properly, and you get to pull it apart and start again. The hardest part is knowing which parts need replacing and how to put it together so it matches factory specifications- luckily there is the Haynes manuals- Often referred to as the "book of lies", I prefer to think of it as a "book of clues" The hardest part of any journey...
