Hi list, Here're some simple questions concerning my GAN3 (MKII Midget, 1965) resto-project (remember the car is in bits and pieces, engine and gearbox are out). I think most questions are related to "some advice wanted" from experienced people: - Should I replace the spigot bush? How to determine if it's necessary? - How to see if the spring-boxes need attention? Should I open the rear bulk-head to see if the spring-boxes need attention? - How to prevend rust forming between two spot welded pannels? (for example floor to sill seams) - How to prevend rust at the edges... MORE

To Tim Summers I had to cut out both inner and outer skins on both sides of my '73 Midget. New panels were fabricated and welded into place on both inner and outer skins. I did this to restore the structural integrity of the entire rear end. Once the panels were welded in, I used expandable foam to fill the areas inside of the boot. This will keep any water out and soundproof it a bit as there is no longer a hollow area left. Hope this helps. Rick Las Vegas, Nevada acostahr@... "Acosta" 3201... MORE

Dear Fellow Midget owners, For some reason a 1966 MG Midget fell into my hands and I'm not sure what really to do with it. Since it doesn't run at all, and hasn't since 1978, I can't drive it over a cliff, and yet my wife and I have this vision of "touring" through the mountains and valleys of northern New Mexico and southern Colorado with it. My real question concerns how to best START the restoration project in the first place and how to find the parts that I will need, at a reasonable price, to get close... MORE

Hi, Peter- As I am preparing my car for Judson supercharger (much heat!), so installed Speedwell (USA) vertical alum. rad. along with suckthru 1000+CFM fan (removed mechanical) and also use stock 1275 oil cooler (to be later replaced with 16 row unit and "off engine" oil filter set-up, when blower-"tailored" 1293 arrives for installation). Currently running a stock 1098 (came with car). Cooling with alum rad so good it must be more than 50% "blocked off" for winter use with 180F thermostadt. Cap'n. Bob '61 :{) PilotRob@... 3163... Stuart Standard 1275 at a guess would like Choke 36mm Aux Vent 3.5 Emulsion tube F2 Airs & main jets really need setting up on a RR but as a first go (and at a bit of a guess since I haven't played with a 'standard' 1275 for years) I would go for 160 airs and 155 mains... Hi, ST- I don't lose my "little parts", either, and as I said, it's really the only way to "thoroughly" clean out all those little channels. Also, by "spraying" carb cleaner into channels, you see what channels are "attached" to other channels! Very educational!! "Normal" settings I had in my 45DCOE when I picked it up originally from Sports & Classics, many, many years ago, "tuned" for stock 1275 Spridget: Chokes 34mm Aux Vent 3.5 Mains 145 Air Corr. 175 Pump jet 50 Idle 50F9 Placed same on stock 1275 and worked just fine, right out of box. Hi all, In need of help again. Convinced the car is running rich (and I cannot get it any leaner) and that I can get it going better I had a look at the carbs. It is a November 1972 1275cc UK car with no known mods. Twin Su's. The needles are AN, are these right as my book says this year should have AAT? Will this matter? The needles have no spring behind them. Where should the shoulder of the needle be in relation to the piston? When the piston bottoms what should bottom on to what? Now... MORE

Hi Listers, in my '58 frogeye, should there be structural re-reinforcement that goes to the rear of the rear wheel? There is a support panel in front and on top of the inner rear wheel arch (i.e. "B" post to wheel arch) but doesn't go behind it. I am sure some books show some, but it might have been a later mod. Finally, the boot floor to rear wing panel should be welded to both floor and rear wing - right? Any comments gratefully received. I'm rebuilding the back end of my Frogeye - but didn't have the advantage... MORE

Hi All. The restoration of my 60 Bugeye is finally complete except for a pesky real oil seal leak. I plan on running her for a few hundred miles with the hope everything will wear in (New rebuilt engine)after a while. If not I will pull the engine and install a real seal conversion kit. Anyone ever installed one?? Is it a straight forward project or are there any tricks or pitfalls I should know about? I have a picture of my bugeye in the PHOTO section if anyone wants to take a look. I would like to thank... MORE

Hi all, My 1967 early Mk 4 sprite features a misfire when it gets warm, especially sat in traffic. I THINK it may be related to the non vacuum advance distrib utor. Has anyone else had a similar problem? It seems to go away when the e ngine cools. The motor is 1275cc, stage 2 head, and I think the distributor was modified for race (not my doing!). I get a very bad problem cold starting the vehic le which seems to improve when I replace the plugs and the rotor arm - but then gradually gets worse again... MORE

Two car shows coming up this month in SE Pennsylvania. August 11 & 12 is the New Hope Auto Show, at the New Hope/Solebury High School in New Hope, PA, just off Route 202. (Easy access from NJ.) Lots of antique and classic cars, and a good variety of Brit cars as well. A pretty good auto jumble (flea market), and food is available from the local Boy Scout troop, so it isn't too expensive. August 19 is the PA Mustang Club car show in Coopersburg, PA. On Route 309, just north of Quakertown. Very large selection of classic... MORE

Hi folks, The only places where I would not use anti-seize is on torque critical components and where it will come into contact with rubber type products (that phrase could be subject to yet more comment)and painted surfaces where it can degrade the rubber/paint. I would not use it on Spark plugs,(IMHO)preferring the clean and dry route. If I'm putting a spark plug in that tight I struggle to get it out then I'm doing it wrong in the first place - or the threads need cleaning. I finally finished cleaning my fuel tank. In step one, I cleaned the inside of it with a degreaser and you should have seen the crud that came out. The solution changed color from clear to a very dirty brown where you couldn't see through it. I then let it air dry and poured the etcher in and sloshed it around quite a bit. After following the instructions and letting it sit for a certain amount of time while rotating the tank to get all sides, I poured the etcher out and let that dry. The slushing solution was... Phil thanks for the info. Your first mods is about what I plan on doing funds permitting. Lowered springs, new bushes some negative camber and maybe a =BE anti-roll bay to start. Wheels and tyres later. The frontline conversion I have to give it some thought. Will order up the parts soon as they are on sale. The first rainy spell we get I will install the new item s along with an oil cooler. Don=92t want to do it while the sun shines that is driving time. Again thanks for the advise. Depends on rubber engine mount condition, how the turrets are bolted to the chassis, type of dashpot cap etc etc. I got mine to fit under a standard bonnet. There are several ways to get the clearance improved by as much as an inch. Some involve cutting the engine turrets, some machining the manifold, some rebolting the turrets, polishing the tip of the dashpot cap. The list is endless, the result is very worthwhile. paranoid ... well probably! If you imagine how an agitator works in a can of spray paint I reckon a solid piece of anything loose in the sump would have the same effect - ie. constantly churning up material that should ordinarily stay on the floor of the sump. Anyway, the company that supplied it have said they'll sort it all out and the car is being collected by trailer today. Beginning to wonder if I'll ever get to drive the bl**dy thing this summer!
