I too much redo the weather stripping around the windows in my 79 Yellow monster. I am also thinking of putting on one of those exhaust systems, they look like the Abarth systems from the 60s and 70s? Anyone have any experience with them, the stock system is getting rusty and won't pass the PA inspection (MOT). John Poynton Havertown, PA teachjp@... 1888... MORE

Chaps & Chapesses, I have a frog with 1/4 eliptic rear axle. As I have mentioned previously, I am fitting wire wheels from a 1/2 eliptic Midget. I have done some more measuring & now know that the 1/4 eliptic axle is 1"(inch) wider than the 1/2 eliptic. My wires half shafts are therefore each 1/2" shorter than the steel ones. (From flange to spline). I removed the diff. & looked at the protrusion length of both, to gauge the insertion distance into the diff. gears. This confirmed my concerns, that the splined end of the half-shafts would only... MORE

Just to let everyone know (if anyone really cares), I am getting ready to rebuild my 1973 Midget pretty much from the ground up. Right now I drive it on a daily basis but due to it leaking oil and smoking so badly, my wife told me to rebuild the engine. From she told me go ahead and rebuild the front end, re-doing the interior and also to repaint the car. Who said you can't buy love, my wife certainly did!!!! Anyway, as I progress through the labor of love which I have been given only one month to... MORE

There is a round of the MGCC Speed Championship at Prescott Hillclimb this weekend (9-10 June) which has a number of Spridgets on the entry list (including mine) along with some very valuable Bugattis. By a strange quirk of organisation there is another round of the MGCC Speed Championship this weekend at Gurston Down Hillclimb. Alternatively the Royal Purple Austin Healey Club race series is holding a round at Donington Park this weekend and I understand that Dave O'Neill and Simon Page from the FISC series will be battling it out with the Big Healeys and modified Sprites. Can someone please tell me the size of the steering wheel nut? I have checked every manual in my possession and have been unable to locate the size. My restoration is going on 8 years and looks like it may be finished soon...thank goodness. 66 midget, Riviera Blue with a blue hood...Blue hood? You say! Well, that is the only thing keeping me from getting to finish the car to the way it looked coming off the assembly line. I have searched for over 8 months for the right color blue hood with no luck. The closest I can... MORE

I filters Running an engine slightly lean doesn't give the same symptoms as fuel starvation. Its not a good thing for exhaust valves and piston crowns however... You can check the mixture by looking at the spark plugs after a long run - light brown deposits on the ceramic below the electrode is ideal - if the ceramic appears to be white then you are probably running too lean. Another (crude) way to check is when driving at a constant cruising speed (with everything warmed up) pull the choke out a small amount - if the car accelerates slightly... MORE

I just installed K&N filters along with LCB headers and a tuned exhaust, and needed to change from the standard needle to richer one. All the suppliers sell needles, but the correct one depends on which engine you have. For instance, in my 1098 the standard needle is (I believe) "AN" and the upgrade is a different letter designation which I can't recall. In any event, I wouldn't recommend changing the needle until you've driven with the filters and the engine sounds like its starved for fuel. "Alex del Russo" 1830... MORE

Paul, I don't know if this will help you but here it is anyway. You might be able to get some good info out of this lot. Gary (Newcastle UK) 69 Sprite MKIV www.geocities.com/garys_sprite_site Facts You Should Know About Air Filters The primary function of an air filter is to clean the air before it enters the engine. If this is true, why do we see so many engines, especially expensive competition engines, without air filters? The answer is airflow. An engine's power output is proportional to the volume of air it can ingest at any given rpm, assuming... MORE

Looking for wisdom (or just opinions) from listers. I am rebuilding front suspension on my Bugeye. Staying with lever dampers(in good shape), replacing all bushings with polyurethanes. Thinking of changing coil springs to lower ride & firm up handling. But not sure what spring rate (lbf/in) should go with - 340, 360 or 400? Bugeye will be strong street only, no racing. I will be using Datsun 5speed, so weight will be a bit more than stock. Any recommendations by those listers who have made similar changes? Also, any suggestions (good/bad experiences) between usual vendors - ie VB, M*ss... MORE

Another possibility (and an old Spridget favourite) is that the front shock absorbers are worn out. Try 'bouncing' the front of the car up and down each side. If the car keeps going up and down when you let go then the front dampers are worn out. You can try topping them up with hydraulic oil. If the oil then pumps its way out past the seals over the next couple of days you need to replace the dampers. New dampers are now available and though expensive are well worth it. Alternatively you might like to consider one of... MORE

I recently purchase 1961 LHD Bugeye Sprite. After numerous attempts to install the correct arms and blades I have come to the conclusion that the wiper system on the car may have come from a RHD Bugeye or possibly was incorrectly installed. (Not much on the car is original) Does anyone know if there is a way to correct the problem or do I need a completely new unit? Can the start and stop position of the wipers be modified? If it has to be replaced. . . . what components will I need? Many thanks in advance for... MORE

Hello from Down Under, My Mk 4 sprite is nearing the paint stage ,having been fixed after its recent attempt on my well being. Does anyone on the list have any experience of "Hammertex" or "Hammertite" paint? It seems as good thing to paint the underside of the car with,it has a textured ( hammered) finish, and seems virtually" un chippable". I have been told that it is commonly used on the underside of rally cars,if it is so good, why is it not used all the time? Regards Chris B Perth, Western Australia "chris broughton" 1720... MORE

Having just purchased our first Midget (1969 Mk III pre-face lift), is there anyone close to the middle of the UK (we live near Warwick), who would like to realise a little cash by selling me their MIG welder? Also I need rear floors (or complete full length panels) and heelboard/ rear bulkhead/ spring boxes? Anybody got any surplus panels please? I shall then have more to spend on other items later on during the (no doubt expensive) restoration... "Graham Roberts" 1717... MORE

I had something similar to this happen a while back. What was going on was the clutch fliud either had air and/or moisture in it. When I would first start to drive the fliud was cold and worked pretty good. Once I was driving and shifting a while, the fliud heated up and the moisture would boil under the intesnse hydraulic pressure and of course if there is any air at all, it made the situation worse. This would result in the clutch not disengaging completely as the clutch just would have the correct amount of pressure and fluid... MORE

Went and looked at an interesting Midget last night with the possible intention to buy. It was a 1977 1500 but by 94 it was knackered. So the owner decided to restore it. (This is in the UK). Instead of restoring it back to standard she restored it as a 68. With chrome bumpers etc. Leather seats. Walnut Dash. Its a light metallica blue. Still the original 1500 motor but with a spitfire overdrive gearbox. Used original body although usual stuff like sills floors, basically the whole front from the back of the doors forward was replaced. However since... MORE

Hello, I am new to this group, but I do have several questions regarding an old Midget that has come back into my life. The vin is GAN1L10886. The state of California only recognizes the car as a '63 model, but I do know that it is a '62. Well, the car is pretty complete except for the aluminum cockpit surrounds, the rear license lamp, and the engine is missing the serial number plate. The engine block has a 950 casting, so I assume it is close to original, but there are some numbers stamped into the block surface.... MORE
