My engine adapter mounts on the distributor side of the block with only two 5/16 bolts, you can see this type of adapter in Vizard's book. "hapfp2000 " 18415... MORE

Bentley's manual lists a 1098 engine weight as 253 lbs. If I recall the 1275 is around 270 lbs. Transmission is listed at 44 lbs. Any one know or guess about how much a 1275 engine weighs stripped of the head, starter, generator, carburetors, exhaust manifold, distributor, all the smog equipment and oil filter? I suppose I could weigh them all and practice some higher mathematics but why not ask first. Don "Don May" 18407... MORE

Never pulled a Spridget engine and need advice. The cross brace in front of the front engine pulley had been pushed back at some point in the life of the car and is only 1/2 and inch in front of the pulley. The instructions in my manuals simply say lift the engine and pull it out. (Bentley and Haynes) But . . . how far forward does the engine need to travel to disengage from the clutch/flywheel before you can begin to lift it up and out? I do not have a clear picture of how the engine shaft... MORE

G'day Mark I have seen a few reproduction workshop manuals with the pages printed half-size and side by side. Obviously only needs half as many pages. Perhaps this is the reason? regards Colin "Colin Dodds" 18326... MORE

Hey, Does anyone know why the original 61-74 Midget Workshop Manual was 330 pages but the new reprint ISBN 0837606691 of supposedly the same book is only 140 pages? Thanks Mark Howard "Mark Howard " 18296... MORE

Weel a Sprite I wouldn't have had an alternator originally so that's a POs wiring. Basically you need 3 wires: a thin one to drive the ignition warning light a medium one that's monitors the battery voltage (and also I think provides the current for the field coils and a big fat one to return charging current to the battery. Check out a manual for which goes to which on the alternator. I could tell you but my Sprite is 250 miles away. Incidentally, to slightly hijack your thread, can someone explain why the sense and charge wire are... MORE

Sounds like you might have messed up one of the gear assemblies, but the only way to find ot is to dismantle it, using the factory manual for preference. Sorry, I can't help there, I do have a factory manual, but only for the mark 2 Midget, with the old spring clutch rather than the easier later diaphram clutch. As to what has happened, whatever has happened to the clutch hydraulics, the clutch lining will also have fixed itself to the flywheel pretty thoroughly by now and you are best off breaking that joint by splitting the gearbox from... This may have been around before, but I got it again today!! I think this guy should have been promoted, not fired. This is a true story from the Word Perfect Help line which was transcribed from a recording monitoring the customer care department. Needless to say the Help Desk employee was fired, However, he/she is currently suing the Word Perfect organization for "Termination without Cause." Actual dialogue of a former WordPerfect Customer Support employee (now I know why they record these conversations!) "Ridge Hall computer assistance, may I help you?" "Yes, well, I'm having trouble with WordPerfect." "What... MORE

Willy Thanks a lot for this link, I spoke to a very helpful person from autosparks this afternoon re a Gan-5 =3D=0D Mk3 Midget rear loom and he gave me prices for a rear loom and full loom which were: Rear =A326.94 Full =A3134.40 Both plus VAT@... % and carriage. He also said he would put a catalogue in the post for me. And that they did =3D=0D do the separate coloured wires if I wanted to make one up myself, although it =3D=0D may not work out much cheaper, not sure if he was just saying that or... MORE

Bill Try Ebay. I've seen quite a few Haynes manuals for that year coming up on ebay.co.uk, not sure about ebay.com because I don't watch that one. Nigel "amukdigiphoto " 17897... MORE

Bill, I have a British Leyland workshop manual for Sprite marks II, III, & IV and Midget Marks I, II, & III, up to GAN 5 -153920 (1974 models). If you're interested, contact me off list. I'd be prepared to let go for what I paid for it plus shipping from Montreal. Tony Pooley tpooley@... "anthony pooley" 17903... MORE

Nigel, If I were close by I would certainly be happy to look at it. As a point of curiosity why are you re-wiring? My experience is that it's usually not the wire that is at fault rather oxidation on the connectors and that is a matter of cleaning and repairing wire ends that strands of wires have broken at connectors. Other than that there is the problem of previous owners adding and subtracting stuff then leaving strange unmarked or non color coded wires dangling about. In the electrical section of the Haynes and Bentley manuals there are wiring... MORE

Bob Thanks for this - interesting stuff! I have David Vizard's book on tuning A Series engines - not that its done me any good mind! lol The fuel cut-off switch is already fitted, plus I'll probably put in an immoboliser as well. Mind you with guaranteed values from insurers, and such low sale prices, having it stolen may well be the best way of recouping your investment! Not that I would suggest or encourage such fraudulent practice! Nigel "amukdigiphoto " 17882... MORE

I need to get a Workshop Manual that covers the '73 MG Midget with a 1275. The two I have, BMC and Ball and neither covers this Midget very well. Does anyone have a good one? What is it and where could I find one? Out of print I am sure. Bill French Hilton Head frenchww@... 17887... MORE

G'day Mark et al The first time I did a gearbox rebuild (maybe 30 years ago) I used a non-factory manual, and I seem to remember it was Haines. I ended up with 2 springs and plungers left over. Could have been my inexperience of course. But I later compared the manual I had used with the factory Manual and found them to be almost word-for-word ..... except for the entire paragraph missing about where to put these springs and plungers. I couldn't suggest more strongly that you use the official factory Manual, for this and any other jobs... MORE

Brad, Yes we can drive LHD cars in the UK. Most of the prototype minis I drive are left hookers destined for, usually, the US market. A guy a few houses down the street has an Ex california MGB , de rubber bumpered (de fendered?) but retained as LHD. Actually after driving several thousand miles in Continental Europe and the States I find that driving on the right is more natural, my LHD wife prefers driving her MGFon the left. I never thought about US spec tail lights until I bought some boxed repro ones from a show here... MORE

I put in a new layshaft, thrust washers and some bits and bobs in my '74 using the Haynes manual, and it seemed pretty straightforward apart from the first motion shaft wouldn't come out of the casing the way the manual said. Having said that, I didn't dismantle the mainshaft at all. Regards David "David Jacobs" 17760... MORE

Sometime in the near future, I am going to have to tear down the ribcase on the 72 and redo the bearings. I would appreciate suggestions on the best resource to guide me through this process. I have the Haynes manual but as usual there seem to be too many steps that are missing. If anyone has done this project and found a useful guide or manual please pass along the info. Thanks Mark Howard "mbhnm " 17747... MORE

I found the Haynes manual OK for rebuilding the dual-circuit master cylinder with the exception of removing the piston assembly. It neglects to mention the circlip which is located beneath the nylon washer. I drilled holes in the nylon washer and removed it in pieces. After this, the manual is correct. Dave "daveo138 " 17397... MORE

Don, being of UK origin with a 1275, I don't have a great deal of experience with dual master cylinders, but I DO have a factory manual (reprint) which has a cross section diagram that shows the front and rear piston 'cups' both immediately adjacent to their respective ports to the reservoir. If you can measure the port to port distance somehow (either with the reservoir removed or on a scrap one?), this will allow you to calculate the spacing for the pistons. Regards David PS if you want the diagram or instructions scanning, let me know. "David Jacobs"... MORE

Bob, and all Have the nylon washer out now and have removed the pistons. The rear piston was not attached to the front by anything. The manuals I have do not show the wire, or what ever, that wraps around the pins at the end of the front piston to the front of the rear piston. There is what looks to be a cotter pin attached around the rear piston pin but loose. I have no idea how long it is suppose to be, the distance between the front and rear piston, or how compressed the spring is supposed... MORE

Thanks to all and have a Saftey Fast New Year!! And to Ed I do have a few shop manuals including the factory manual, and I do believe that this forum is here to assist others when they have a question otherwise this group would be pretty dead if we all had our own answers. Anyway I prefer to drive them every chance I get. I personally find that much more fun than reading!!! Thanks again to all. Don "Mg Don " 17273... MORE

Exactly, RBH- A "reasonable" category should be established for passenger-carrying SUV's appropriate to their weight/horsepower ratio or whatever. At his point they will become as efficient in these respects as they can reasonably be compatible with smooth running. It can be done and should be done for the well-being of all concerned, especially in "dense" traffic areas (NY Metro area, fr'instance). Later pollution-equipped Spridgets and LBC's have their "categorical" specs. to meet here in CT. 'til their 20th birthday at which time they become "exempt" in this respect, as do other older type pax carrying vehicles. Retrofitting non-pollution types... MORE
