David When I changed the rack on my 66 I did it by placing a straight edge against the front rims with spacers to clear the tyres and used a tape rule. I only used my method to make the car drivable for the 2 miles to my nearest tyre shop who checked it for me and said it was 10 mm out (I thought that was quite good, they were horrified). Well... I don't think he is pulling your leg, David... rather, I think there is a misunderstanding. Moisture in brake fluid is, as far as I know, a bad thing in any event. Non-silicone fluids hold moisture in suspension whereas the silicone stuff does not. So, you could say silicone, by allowing the moisture to puddle at system low points (like the calipers wherein the moisture can cause corrosion!) keeps the moisture "away" from the rubber seals? Which one is worse when it comes to corrosion, is anyone's guess insofar as your's truly has no idea!! Loods like your... MORE


what have you got against alignment specialists?! Seriously, once you get it something near, by whatever method you come up with, I'd get it checked out properly. There could be a problem with the string from the rear wheel method, as the front and rear track aren't the same (the difference is not so much for Rostyles as for wire wheels) One way of doing it would be to use a plumb line from the front wheel rim, front and rear (you'll probably have to use a spacer to clear the tyre) and mark the equivalent point on the... Everyone seemed to think it was the thrust washers causing a bad vibration upon acceleration. I replaced them yesterday, and while the old ones were worn a bit, the new ones did nothing to fix the problem. Now I need suggestions on where to look for where it's coming from. The engine is running perfectly, no vibration when not under load, only when accelerating. I am not sure how to tell if it's coming from the tranny or the rear end, but it does seem to coast with no problem. Could this be a bad motor mount? the driver's... MORE


Actually, Jeremy... The crankcase pressure is in and of itself the propellent in a "ventilated" rather than "evacuated" system, the former of which I prefer for exactly the reason you state in your post to Guy Weller....less dilution of already diluted octanes. Fr'instance, I think it was Chris who mentioned dragsters with vacuum pumps hooked up to evacuate crankcase pressure and considering THEIR applications I can well nigh understand this, considering THEIR crankcase pressures!! Hi In Essex UK, someone has just broken a 1500 midget and has left over engine, rear axel with springs and propshaft and shocks, boot lid (good) plus other bits to be decided when rebuild finished. Does anyone have an assortment of the shims that go in the inner ball joint housing of the EARLY steering rack? I had to seriously heat mine to get it apart and the shims are history, or more like toast. I need to replace them. I need an assortment of sizes in order to get the ball joint set just right. I have the early steering rack pretty well disassembled and am in the process of cleaning it up. But I am down to the inner ball joints and cannotget either of the housings unscrewed. I have unscrewed the unit from the rack and removed the locking cup washer over the raf of it. But knowing that this unscrewing takes special tools, does anyone have any tricks for unscrewing the assembly without the special tools? Thanks. Bob... Your pressure isn't bad at those numbers though it could be a little higher considering it's 20/50 you are dealing with. But not necessarily to worry. I agree with Andrew about the gauges. Anything your gauge tells you should be confirmed by substitution with another gauge....I use my mechanic's gauge to check mine and he's got two independent gauges. So, by checking mine (and others), he's always checking his for accuracy, as well!! :) A Series A engine with decent bearing AND decent oil pump clearances should idle at not less than 10psi (stinking hot, not just warm)... Must sell getting married and have to cut back on projects, the car was converted to RHD with all parts imported from the UK. New Moss Alum Valve cover and chrome bolts, new transmission, factory motor, webber side draft, 1963 Thomas Denner Bonnet one of the only ones known to be left from the short production run from 61-63. Lots of extra parts needs resto finished. Very rare car with paperwork to back the history. David, Don't bother pulling the rubber boot, if everything is OK you have to replace it. If it not you have a messy part to play with! Simply leave the car on the ground and have someone rotate the steering wheel from side to side (about 9 to 12 ins). Get hold of the joint with your fingertips, you can feel for worn steering rack joints through the rubber boot of the steering rack with a worn rack producing a 'click' or 'jerk' near the joint. You will feel play if it is worn. The whole joint will seperate... MORE


Hi I have just joined the group and have been working on a '68 Midget since last Sept. Previously I had owed a '55 TF and a '54 TD. Having replaced my top/hood I did not find any instructions other than the recommendation that I have a top shop do it. I have a Weber on my 73 Midget 1275. I will send you a picture later this evening that shows how mine is set up. There is a screw with a hole in it that holds the throttle cable sheeth but lets the cable through. One thing I had to do was to make a small mounting plate to hold the throttle return spring. Speaking of yesterdays show. On my way back from the show I heard a loud clunks noise come from the car. I was traveling in traffic and thought I may have run over something. I checked the guages and all looked ok. I checked them again about 30 seconds later and saw the temp gauge head right for the hot side of the gauge. Hi David - Gerard First there are two totally different racks - early, which Gerard is referring to and late which David has. They are completely interchangeable but you have to use all the bits peculiar to each rack. Second, it is a easy swap for you David as they should be both late racks and much simpler than early ones. Just pry up the steering shaft enough to unhook it from the rack then slide the rack out the side, you will have to pull the rad to get at the clamp bolts - you don't have to... MORE


G'day all I spent a bit of time last week fixing a Mk IIA Sprite just purchased by Duncan, a new customer. He bought it as he had always wanted a Sprite, and it was love at first sight - pretty Sky Blue, nice paint. Now Duncan is 6'3" tall, and in his early fourties. Neil, yes, you're correct in thinking the canmber angle is not adjustable. I can't think of much that would cause this. Something must be different from one side to the other - one possibility is that you have different coil springs on each side, maybe a 1500 on one and a 1275 or earlier on the other - this would cause a bit of a lean to one side which might look like different camber angles. Max I lay the hood on a flat surface inside up I then fold the panel containing the rear windows inwards so the inside of the window rests on the inside of the roof I then fold the rear side windows inwards being careful to fold the hood fabric between the windows and not the window.
