far off the drum as they need to be to give running clearance, and this will cause the levers that the handbrake rods attach to to push the rods back. I am thinking maybe these drums have been turned by a PO. How do I check them? Anyone got the internal diameter spec? Guy "Guy Weller" 14798... MORE

Well I spent some time today "adjusting" and they are better, although the handbrake still feels "springy" when pulled on as if something is stretching or bending. New cable so maybe that is still settling down. One odd thing is that I fitted the new cable because the old one was on the limit of available adjustment so I thought it was stretched. New one is almost the same. Maybe I do need new drums. Oh - another thing - should there be some sort of pull off springs attached to the handbrake rods? There dosn't seem to be... MORE

Guys- Just heard from RHD lister in UK who states: "His car is inclined to incline to the right, except when going right, when it is inclined to right itself!" So there you have it. As a fellow lister put it months ago: The unibody takes a "set" over time. End of story! :) Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 14799... MORE

Guy- New cable didn't really do it either, eh? Gotta be "turned" drums, then...I mean, at this point, what else could it BE? No "return" springs for handbrake as far as I know. I've got to remove and work on a starter at the shop tomorrow so I'll be under there and will check. Seems that "return springs" of some sort could be installed though. I'll take a look tomorrow. Does the handbrake pull all the way up without much resistance? If so, (and assuming the brakes are adjusted properly) something to check is the condition of the linkages between the rods and the brake shoes (the levers that go into the backplate). Even a small amount of wear here can make a big difference to the handbrake (as I found on my '74 Midget - replacing them made a huge improvement, but you couldn't see much difference between the old and new ones) Or you can cheat and pack out the ends of the outer cable with washers... Hi The end of the oiling system is the rocker shaft and rockers. On my 1275 the shaft was worn real bad and the rocker bushings were also worn. I took the valve cover off while the motor was running and I was flooded with oil squirting out of everywhere. I replaced the shaft and found some rockers that weren't worn as bad and it shore improved my oil pressure hot. Take off the valve cover and see how much oil is passing through there while running and hot could be there is no resistance there for the oil... MORE

Hell, Don- Having owned LBC's before, tuning SU's should be easy for you! Seriously. No rocket science, here. They are one of the most reliable and user-friendly devices on the car. One read of the manual and you'll feel right at home and if not, feel free to contact me off list with any problems/ questions. Not working this sequence due to a cold (medicating - can't fly) so I'll be around. And we have scads of people on the list that know SU's if we can't come up with the answers!! Just make sure they are clean on... MORE

1976 MG Midget 1500 Ignition Question I do not have spark when the engine is cold. Leave the key in the on position for about 5 to 10 minutes first however and the spark returns and the engine fires. What gives? Ignition (Distributor)is electronic. The ballast resistor has been bypassed as required and the car ran fine till just a few months ago. Leaving the key in the on position definitely warms the coil and the distributor resistor. Though probably unrelated, the alternator is new. The only other variable has been that the car has not been run for... MORE

Just a possibility - High potential short to ground in the coil, as with most electronic stuff, increase the heat + increase the resistance, coil heats up high potential short to ground becomes the path of MOST resistance allowing those pesky electrons to follow their normal path to the distributer.... I have a 1976 MG Midget 1500 that shown no spark when cold. When I leave the key in the on position for about 5 to 10 minutes however, the spark does return and the car starts just fine. Any ideas anyone? Ignition (electronic distributor) Coil: 3 year old Lucas with Ballast Resistor bypassed as instructed. Coil gets warm when I keep the key on as does the distributor resistor. (What is this for anyway?) Other variables. New Alternator and the car came out of a three year hibernation period. Previous to this the car started and ran just... MORE

Hi all I have just noticed a thread about negative camber, we have done extensive testing over the years and found 1.5 to 1.8 deg of camber to be the optimum for grip and no more than 1 deg if you just want good balanced handling. The more camber you have the twitchier the response and the quicker the handling can snap into over steer. when looking for good handling one of the first things to make sure is that all bushings, dampers and links are in good condition, check for any irregularities and camber caster and general alignment... Yes, they are different. You can run LHD wiper blades on a RHD car, but the sweep of the wipers is wrong. Mike "Mike Gigante" 14626... MORE

Am I wrong (probably) I thought Yank spec. spridgets had three wiper arms, whereas our RHD British cars just have the two. Regards Alan "Jones, Alan" 14627... MORE

David is right. You get static negative camber but at the price of inferior suspension geometry. Go for the neg camber trunnions You can buy them somewhere in the range US$60 - US$70 last time I looked from Tony Bennetto at the Bugeyebarn in Melb Australia. bugeyebarn@... He does lots of mail-order, so I am sure he can accomodate you. Mike p.s. I used to have the plate under the shocks since that is how my first sprite came to me, but I now use neg canber trunnions exclusively. "Mike Gigante" 14615... MORE

we also had two arms up to mid 68. At that point, the man I dislike as much as our former Prez, Ralph Nader, had the governments ear well enough to lo bby for the 3 wiper system that continued throughout the rest of the Spridg ets life...... Chris, I see what you're getting at, but I don't think it would work. Because the angle of the shock absorber mounting is less than 45, you will raise the shock absorber pivot point more than you will move it inboards. So on full bump (i.e. on hard cornering), you will get less negative camber than standard, not more. A much better bet is to get negative camber top trunnions. Regards David "David Jacobs" 14612... I have finally received my dash for my RHD conversion on my 60 Bugeye. It now occurs to me that I will need a pair of RHD wiper arms. Does anyone have some in their spares?? I know that there are some RHD car owners on the list. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Brad Brad Fornal 14614... MORE

Chris I have did this way back when I was racing and negative trunnions were not available. I also did this on my 777 Midget and it works. To get about 1 deg use a 5/32 washer under the shock=92s 3 mounting points. What it does is in effect moves the shock arm inboard giving you negative camber. I believ e in theory the negative trunnion effectively does the same thing. Doug 77 Michigan Doug Pletcher 14613... MORE

Along this same line, I picked up Bosch Platinum Plus 4 plugs from Peter C. and finally had the time to install them. I also bought new Magnecor wires from Moss. The engine seems to run smoother than it did. The old plugs were not very old and all looked fine when removed. The OEM plug wires that the P.O. installed were absolute crap. The plug ends had no spring tension to hold them in place. I attribute the smoother running more to the Magnecor wires than the plugs, but why not use the best plugs in my toy?!?... MORE

How many miles on the engine? On this engine, did you rebuild with a new oil pressure pump to begin with? Or did you re-use the old pump? Could be low level, clogged filter, sticking oil pressure reliefe valve, worn pump or worn bearings. The first one is a no brainer for sure as is checking for an inaccurate gauge. Go down to your favorite shop and use a mechanic's gauge to check yours. If your gauge is accurate, you are looking at a clogged filter, stuck oil pressure reliefe set-up, worn pump or worn bearing(s). Removing the oil... MORE

okay. '79 midget, started driving funny yesterday. checked today, I found, how do I describe this, the left front lower suspension arm, which has two fulcrum pins attached to the frame, i guess, and the rear one is RIPPED out of the frame. It's only attached by the front fulcrum pin. and the spring holding in the whole assembly. Any suggestions on how to fix this? I know it'll probably involve welding new pieces into the frame, and I don't even know the proper terms for what I'm trying to explain. I made it up Rt. 93 tonight at... MORE

George, Is it possible that the fulcrum pin was just sheared off?... or did it actually "rip out" the rear hole where the A-Arm attaches to the frame? When I was re-doing my suspension, I was thinking that this seemed to be a "weak spot" in the design. You can get a replacement front frame assembly from Victoria British for about $450... but replacing it would involve a complete engine and front suspension removal... not my idea of fun. By the way... did you hit a rock, or pot hole, or something like this? Wouldn't this be covered in... MORE
