Bob is right on this one Gary, as ever. It's not a case of eliminating lost movement in this system such as getting some found movement. Replace all the clevis pins, one on the handbrake lever, one at the other end of the cable and one at each end of each handbrake rod, 6 in total. Check your cable to see if there is any adjustment left in it and replace if not. The holes in the rods will also be slightly oval but this is an expensive to replace part so don't unless the holes are very elongated.... MORE

Thanks David, but that would fall under the subject of "After I pull my engine..." BTW... I did not replace any of the internal clutch parts in the tranny... but they all seemed in very good condition (before I put the trans on the engine)and the throw out bearing lever moved forward and back without any problems. -Brett "Brett LaCroix" 13553... Hi I am attempting to change rear end oil on my Midget. Could someone tell me what size key wrench fits these 2 plugs? I cannot remember what I used when I did this on my Sprites. If I had the corerect size then, I dont have it now. So before I go to the store and try and guess at the size I would check with all of you first. Thanks ;:Mike K. kna331@... 13520... MORE

According to my Leyland Workshop Manual, which deals with Aprites Mks 2, 3 & 4, and Midgets Mks 1, 2 & 3 up to and including GAN5-153920, the fluid t use in hydraulic dampers is Armstrong Super (Thin) Damper Oil. Or a good quality mineral oil to Specification S.A.E. 20/20W, but this alternative is not suitable for low-temperature operation. Hope this helps Margaret mmbrock88@... 13476... MORE

The pins are fixed central in the holes of the chassis points. Therefore if you install the bush with more meat on the outer side it's going to push the lower wishbone further out and therefore give you -ve camber. Sounds like you got it right to me. "Jeremy Cogman" 13467... MORE

Can't find in the manuals I have what type of oil/fluid to use in the lever arms shock asorbers in the 62 midget. Can they be topped off or the fluid replaced? Don "cowcat_db" 13449... MORE

Gerard, I've installed roll-up doors from Coplay. The kit was intended for DIY, with safe spring tensioners. Very simple. schicmg@... 13456... MORE

They can be topped off with various kinds of fluids. Some guys use motor cycle fork oil and others use various weights of oils depending upon the "stiffness" or "action" they want.....sort of like filling the shocks with liquid Viagra. There is also "official" shock fluid available from the usual suspects. As I recall from a post of Peter C.'s ( nosimport@... ) the shocks must be removed from the car to do this right. For any questions on lever shocks, this is THE fellow to contact. Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 13453... MORE

Hi all, My '58 frogeye (AN5/4406) has the early frogeye rear suspension (Horler says that this change started at AN5/4333 and intermittently to 4507) - BMC obviously had some early spare parts to use up. This means the car has a smaller radius arm bracket, shorter lever arms and longer drop links at the rear than later cars. I bought the car as a "project" and the PO had removed these things (probably rusted away) so do not have originals. That's the techno babble out of the way...now the question; where the **** (heck!) can I get these bits?... MORE

Only reccomendation I can make is to be sure everything is level and plumb....saves you a bundle of headaches later with mis-alignment of the door panels. I'm running an SU HIF44 which is basically the metric version of the 1.75 (1.75" = 44mm) with an integral float chamber. It's on a titan manifold which comes ported for a 1.5 but has enough meat to grind out to 1.75. The carb came off a Metro and is running it's original spring, not sure what colour this is, it has a bit of a yellow tint but that could just be years of muck, standard Metro spring is actually a red! Needle is a BCV with a slight flat filed for all but the last half inch,... MORE

Hello Folks I just picked up some new front shocks. These were the only 2 things that I did not replace on my 1971 Midget's front suspension last spring. What kind of a job am I looking at to put these in? Thanks Jason 1971 MG Midget "Jason Gross" 13429... MORE

Well Brett, I once put the clutch lever in backwards when assembling the trans. I hope this is not why you are having this trouble. As you pressed the clutch there was no action seen through the hole. The release bearing would slip backwards in the grooves in the lever putting no pressure on the clutch. Pulled the engine and had it back in three hours after realizing what we did wrong. good luck. "Ian & Cathy" 13432... MORE

Thanks, Jeremy. There IS a yellow spring (so that's valid) and you are running a modified BCV on a modified Titan. I'll "save" this message for reference when I get going on this upon hearing from APT. I assume you previously ran the motor with the twin 1.25 set-up, Jeremy, then converted over to the single 1.75? If so, what sort of difference in torque and response did you note? My new 1293 is a Cooper "S" tune, having the cam, allum. head, distributor, etc., do I am interested in your observations. Cap'n. Nelson, In the UK, a reconditioned new front suspension will probably cost over 500 pounds sterling - about 750 USD, I guess. SOme quotes I had were over 1000 pounds sterling. I did find some second hand units for about 100 pounds sterling per side - but you are taking a bit of a chance with the number of miles left in the bushes, king pins etc. It depends on what you need, but on my '58 frogeye, very few of the original parts were serviceable. It also depend on how long you want to keep the car. Regards Chris... MORE

Yo, Jeremy!! I am about to go over to a single carb. set-up on my new 1293 engine. Whether it will be a 1.5 or 1.75 remains to be seen...as soon as I hear from Dave or Jack at APT, I'll know more. Meanwhile, if you get the chance and it is no imposition, would like to know the single carb you are running on your's and the needle profile and color spring you are using. TIA! Cap'n. Don, Make sure you have adjusted the brake microms correctly too. You should go full clicks until the drum is locked, and then back off one or at most two clicks, depending on how the whel frees up. Your ebrake lever should only need to travel 2 to 3 clicks to lock the brakes. When it travels farther, time to adjust the brakes again. You could also replace the clevis pins to reduce the play you have in the rods and cable. Gerard "gerardchateau" 13399... MORE

Starting fresh this morning on the problem of not having emergency brake function regardless of cable adjustment and new brake shoes . . . I checked the mechanical brake mechanism again and discovered a combination of collective wear of all the clevis pins, clevis pin holes, and the compensator bracket having been bent upward a bit was enough not to provide the correct length of travel to the rear hand brake lever to engage with enough force. Collective wear . . . just like my joints. Don "Don May" 13396... MORE

Perhaps a little background information would help understand my ending up here asking so many questions. Recently Gerard turned me onto a fella that was selling his 62 Midget MK1 that had been sitting on blocks in an old wood working shop for 18 plus years. It had been last run for a couple of months in 1986 and had also been in storage for a few years prior to that. Time is defiantly not kind to brake systems and the sound of an engine starting for the first time in 16 years sounds a bit like a demolition... MORE

Today I jacked the rear end of my Midget as high as I could get it. Squeezing under my car, I see the slave cylinder pointing in a downward direction... the bleeder valve in the back being the highest point... cool! My 5 year old daughter is becoming an expert "press the pedal and hold... now release slow..." helper. Air bubbles gushed out of the slave cylinder... until soon... only pure break fluid would return when the pedal was pressed/bleeder valve cracked open. Out from under the car... press clutch in and hold... transmission in 1st... turn the starter... MORE

I am rebuilding my 62 Sprite and understand that switching over to disc brakes in the front would be a good idea. I have not done any work on the front suspension before and not exactly sure about how to handle the project. There is currently a drum to disc conversion materials on e-bay and I'm unsure what to look for or what to consider a fair price to pay. It is in Canada and I will be passing through that location in a few weeks so I could see the items and pick them up personally but the... MORE
