Gary, Oil gun is a simple "piston-in-cylinder" device which you use to get thick oil into the fitting rather than grease. I used to have one years ago and will have to get another - I suspect they're not very common nowadays. I imagine it won't be the end of the world if you've put grease in the rack, and I'm sure it's been done many times before. Better to have grease than no lube at all. Manual specifies hypoid 90 oil for the rack. You might try Halfords for an oil gun. Good luck, Tony P. "anthony pooley"... MORE

Tony, I think I got them all except the steering rack, but what do you mean by an oil gun?? Gary King (Newcastle UK) 69 Sprite MKIV "Gaz" 13120... MORE

Hi, I have just done the greasing points on the front of my Sprite. I counted 3 on each wheel, and one on the steering rack. Is there any more that I have missed? Thanks, Gary King (Newcastle UK) 69 Sprite MKIV "Gaz" 13117... MORE

Gary, You should have each side: - - 1 upper/1 lower on swivel pin ("kingpin") =2 - - 1 minimum at one end of fulcrum pin (the small end of the "wishbone"); some people like to get one at each end - much better; I plan to - - one on the steering tie-rod end (track rod end) So that's total 4 minimum, maybe 5, per side. Re the steering rack, BE CAREFUL IF IT'S NOT ALREADY TOO LATE. THAT'S FOR OIL GUN NOT GREASE GUN. Hope this helps, Tony P. "anthony pooley" 13118... MORE

Last night I was asked to diagnose a Spridget brake problem of excessive pedal travel, and ran across something which proved very elusive. The car had lots of pedal travel, nearly to the floor. All of the mechanical parts were in good shape - no significat wear in the pedal bushes, clevis, push rod, etc. The push rod was properly adjusted and the rears were adjusted to the point of just scuffing. There were no signs of fluid leak or leak down. The system had been pressure and vacuum bled several times. Still there was the long and scary... MORE

Tim, I used axle straps in the rear hooked to chains bolted the the trailer chassis. They are fairly short so as the car in winched forward, all the slack is removed. The front is winched down and also snugged down using a racheting strap on each side. I strap to the towhooks if the are present, otherwise over the bunper brackets or A-arms depending on what's there. Gerard "gerardchateau" 12956... MORE

I had them fitted to my 1380 110bhp midget but have now taken them off and just run with panard rod handling is much better and consistent and no sign of tramp even when taking part in sprints an hill climbs. General view seems to be if below 85bhp at wheels and suspension in good nick you really shouldnt need them Peter May dont even sell them any more and it was on their rec that I took mine off "Peter Whittle" 12955... Hey gang, I'm heading out on a 3.5 hour trip across Michigan to drive the Sprite in a Independence day parade. I rented a trailor to put the car on, because I'd like to get there before the parade is over. My question is, when strappin g the car down by the axels, is there any suggestions as to how to keep the rest of the car from bouncing around on it's springs? Also, should I tow i t topless or not? Any experienced knowledge would be much appreciated, TimS '63 Sprite MkII Detroit "Summers, Tim" 12941... MORE

I bought them from British Victoria... They had a nice coat of paint on them... After reading all of the postings (thanks to all) and some older ones I am finding that there is quite a bit to rebuilding them that many outfits don't bother to do. I only have the one failed shock so I can't say that all the BV stuff is bad but this shock sure didn't last long. In answer to some of the other questions I am in Colorado so US options are most attractive to me. I am intrigued by the work that... MORE

Jorge, If you look at the pictures of my '72 and '75, you will have your answer. The '72 has a driver (LHD) mirror only and the '75 has both. The correct style is are the ones on the '75. I used an aftermarket mirror on the '72 because I was missing some of the hardware, but it is mounted in the stock holes. The holes a punched not drilled, so I know they are original. I don't know if locations varied by market, but yours is a California car like mine. Gerard "gerardchateau" 12892... MORE

Aw, c'mon toyperson!! Gimme a break (<huumungus grin.:) You know I love Lucas!! How could I not.. their stuff is all over our airplanes (shudder, shudder!!:) Our checkrides include "fire drills" as well as drills for "smoke removal" because we all "understand" Lucas and respect the "Prince of Darkness"!! We ALL know the vagaries of LBC electrics and the old points systems in particular (but I DO like taking shots at LUCAS, anyway!!:) Go PerTronix or Crane my good "toyperson".... despite what others say, I have found both "take a licking and keep on ticking". to rack" (worn "pinchbolt" - can fail suddenly causing immediate loss of directional control - not good! Ruin your day for sure!). Is play "side to side" or can you move the column "in and out" by gripping the steering wheel and pulling and pushing it towards and away from you? Is there a "current" hands-on Doctor (Clarici or such) in the audience, for I am ancient in this respect....I have too good a relationship (40+ years) with my mechanic who is also a close personal friend! I have been running an old Lucas coil on the 68, but when it rains, it stops working. I don't often drive in the rain, I only get caught out in it, so I attributed the previous failure to hitting a puddle of water. This time, in a slight sprinkling, I was fortunate enough to have coasted under our only overpass and was in a dry environment to assess the issues at hand. First issue was a weak spark, so a tweak to the points (block was slightly worn) and good hot consistent spark was quickly attained. Still wouldn't... MORE

What is the proper procedure to check the condition of the steering rack and associated components on a 74 Midget? Is there anyway to "tighten" the steering to remove excess play? DSutteiii@... 12873... MORE

Bill- I think MiniMania has the PerTronix (and a lot of other stuff!) on sale, now. If not, LBCarCo probably discounts this item as well. And, as long as you are considering replacing the coil as well (under the circumstances), might as well go with a "matching" PerTronix coil. Actually, electronic systems take the wobble into account and modify the signal accordingly so that wobble is effectively "nullified".....one of the benefits of going "electronic", Bill!! Of course, it you can really wiggle the hell out of it and it IS really rather obvious, than "rebuild" or purchase a new... MORE

That's a shock, eh? If he didn't ask your permission, it's not legal. The guy is in the US too, which is probably to your advantage. If I were you, before you contact ebay, I'd write to him and find out if he;s the producer of these or is he selling one he bought from someone else. If he's reselling it, I'd try to snag it for evidence and for finding out who's distributing it. Is the one you have on the high quality enough to reprint from?? After all this talk about junk rebuilt shocks, I'd like to pass along something I've been learning. As some of you may recall my partner and I have embarked on a program to do superior rebuilt MGB and Spridget brake calipers. As part of our learning process, we bought one caliper from each of several USA rebuilders. What we found in them was the stuff of horror stories - old rusted and badly scored pistons, hardware store o-rings substituted for the proper fluid channel seals, partially stripped, rusty old bridge bolts, paint over old rust and grime. There's some... MORE

Living in the NY metro area I was able to visit the Apple shop years ago as I was redoing a TR-6 and needed shocks. This shop as they call it was a broken down garage in such a condition that it should have been condemmed by the building dept. A total mess. They have since moved east with a new catalog and I imagined a newer upgraded shop, factory. Was just at a British car show on the Island a couple of weeks ago and talked to someone who had just visited Apple. It is now an even... MORE

Some rebuilt shocks are more acurately described as repainted. Where are y ou? There are some excellent rebuilders in the states but in the UK? A co uple of years ago I bit the bullet and bought NEW front shocks (=A370 quid each) but if I were doing it now I'd probably get rebuilt from Peter May ww w.petermayengineering.co.uk or AH Spares www.ahspares.co.uk, two companies I trust to supply quality parts. Hi all. While waiting for some bits to arrive to complete other jobs I decided to put the luggage rack back on the '79 Midget. This rack is of the type that has 4 'ears' with 2 screw holes in each that bolt the unit to the boot(trunk). These plug into the ends of the rack by large pins. I am in need of one of these "ears" with the plastic plinth to finish the job. I know I'm taking a shot here but possibly someone has one laying around in a "old parts that I will never use... MORE
