hi, Ive had the front suspension rebuilt recently (about 3-400 miles ago) and the near side wheel seems to exhibit some negative camber whilst the offside wheel does not. It did this before the suspension was rebuilt so it hasnt been caused by that. Its had new shaocks as well at almost the same time (slightly before the rebuild) Am i right in saying that the camber is non adjustable? It seems to drive ok with no huge difference in either right or left hand bends but it is concerning me slightly as I think its safe to assume... MORE

Well, Neil.... Something is obviously bent a bit but let's not be too quick to fix it!! No sense looking a gift horse in the mouth! :) Check this out at a front end shop first, and let's see how much negative camber actually shows on the machine when toe is correctly set and let's see what the castor figures are as well for both sides. You see, a LITTLE negative camber is a good thing for handling. Of course, if it is overdone on a road car, it is at the expense of directional stability, excessive inside tire... MORE

The clutch was engaged when the petal was up. Not supposed to do that. Now recall that I had the Brakes and Clutch Repaired in Cincinnati about 5 years ago. All was fine, as good as it gets with the orig. design brakes for many short trips. This included a new Master cyl. and Slave cyl. Well, after posing the question to the "Club List" the best idea was that the relief hole in the master cyl. was plugged not allowing the presser to bleed off thus allowing the slave cyl. to move the pushrod back and engaging the... Bentley look like they are the cars to beat this year, shame it's now an Audi brand though the chassis are British. We would normally go but cash is a bit tight this year it's a trip to Le Mans or a deposit on a new heating system. A good source for all the latest info and chat is www.clubarnage.com. If you can ever come over to Europe at that time the race is well worth attending. The atmosphere is fantastic. There are ususally tens of thousands of brits there many of whom drive down in either classics or... MORE

After being unable to play in this forum for some time I have rejoined and am again ready to trade info or whatever on my British obsession. FYI-My particular pain is a 1975 Midget 1500. When purchased nearly 4 years ago only the body showed signs of hope. Hell, it even smelled bad. Today the car has a new interior, engine, tranny, driveshaft, radiator, electronic ignition, rebuilt/replaced hydraulics, front tube shock conversion, electric fan, GM pickup truck alternator and much more. Saturday, I am ditching my wire wheels and replacing them with 5.5 inch wide racing mags (H Production... MORE

G'day Rob and Cap'n In a Bugeye, below the centre of the scuttle, there is a 5/16" UNF stud, about 1" long. There is a hole in the curved top face of the Bugeye dash that locates on this stud, with washer and nut. At each end of the rolled top of the dash is another hole, and they align to holes inside the top front of the door opening. A bolt, washer and nut hold them together. There is no bracket at the sides, like there is on the later dashboards. And there are two flat straps with... MORE

Bob... Sounds like you are getting "extra" air to me, and that can only come in via the intake system. So check for intake leaks and security of the intake manifold, carbs and their gaskets, etc. You haven't by chance got a set of emissions carbs. with those "funny" spring loaded "buttons" in the butterfies, have you? They are supposed to open up only during deceleration but I never trusted those little suckers. If so, solder them closed or replace them with solid "discs".....didn't need them back then and don't need 'em now! Just something else to go wrong!... MORE

From what I understand, most of the "blunders" we have been grousing about were meant to cut down on manufacturing costs and make assembly line time shorter.....Like the Mercury Capri I had....the driver's side windshield wiper transmission stripped out. Went through all the trouble of removing the dashboard, dropping the steering column, and found that the transmission was too large to fit through ANY of the openings in the dashboard frame. Had to hacksaw through one of the unibody webs to get the damn thing out. David A. Stevens Jr. Utilities Engineer II NYS Office Of General Services Sheridan... MORE

Yet another fun job. Developed a pin hole leak in the heater core on the 89 Lincoln Town Car a while back.. As the engine came up to temperature, you would get a slight antifreeze smell and a bit of steam on the inside of the windshield. More of a nuisance than anything else. Checked with the local parts house...pretty cheap replacement..$42.00 USD. Checked with my mechanic, and asked him what the old flat rate manual said about the cost of the labor. much to my surprise, the manual estimated the replacement cost of around $600.00....and called for WARRANTY... anyone want to have a laugh look in albums and look for gremlin pos (piece of shit) here is a picture of my wifes car when we built my house (all part time before I was in business) my Boy is now 22 and swapping engines in his hondas. I sent wife to lumber yard for a "few things" on a saturday, she asked if she should take my truck, or if she could take her car, I was busy and not thinking, I said what ever. so she took her car. she got 3 basement windows (not the... "....now I'm wondering..." Chris... Bearing in mind Peter C.'s response to you're problem with respect to different tolerances for different valve guide materials, what did the machine shop have to say on "clearances" in terms of the way the job was done initially. Did you "learn" anything in this respect which might reflect on the original job? Did your cam come as a "kit", most especially with respect to valve springs (poundage) to be used with this cam grind utilizing the STOCK rocker ratio? Most likely, according to my mechanic, the best you can hope for out of the... MORE

I"ll probably end up getting new rails. Now I have a new problem. Was going to drive the car this evening. Started up just fine...ran to the end of the driveway then died like it was out of gas. Could have been because I'm not convinced the guage is accurate. Put about 3 gallons in. Won't fire up. Engine turns over just fine but not getting gas. I'm guessing I hit the wires to the fuel pump which is what the problem was the last time it wouldn't crank. Ain't it always something?? Guess I'll be working on that... MORE

That bush isn't carbon fibre, it's just plain old carbon, a big ring of graphite. You can't get it separately, you need to buy the whole bearing assembly. It's well worth considering the roller one as the carbon ones are not known for their longevity. hmmm! whee is teh bushing? I'm looking in the catalogues and do not see one....is it a seperate part? or do I need to get a new t/o bearing assy? I see there is a roller t/o you can get from Moss?? anyone use this? I have a funny feeling that is what is... MORE

My Mg club had a spring tour today, absolutely fantastic weather. Ran from Crystal lake Il. To Lake Geneva WI. In a group of 14 cars. Me and one other midget were there and a lot of b's a few c's, and one gt. and the oddball triumph. (Beauty car). The other midget owner was giving me a lot of lib about my midget fire (ref to the engine is my best guess :)) The same guy said he was taking his midget to SpriteSpree, when I asked him if he was driving, he said very indignantly, my cars... Totally understand you, Nigel. And have no problem with your point of view. Commendable......but not always practical in all situations. 1959: When I owned my first Bugeye, the New England Thruway (RT. 95) was just being built going through CT. We used to used the "closed" portions of this "new highway" as a drag strip before it opened. I am not even sure the speed limit was anything over 50 on the Merritt Parkway (RT 15) back then. The 948cc engine with the 4.22 dif. was perfectly adequate, accordingly. Well, of course, things changed. I became a commercial pilot... MORE

OK, Reg... Hang in there. At the risk of being a PITA, just confirm you did nothing with the original coil wire hookup or ANYTHING ignitionwise between the period when it was running, you shut it off, did the brake job and tried to start after the brake job was finished...think hard on this. On another facet, you got the little wire/washer vertical stacking sequence (within the distributor) "right" when you eventually did replace the points (important!) and you tried a start with the old condenser prior to substituting a new condenser? Did you previously say your Chilton manual... MORE

well, have tried two new coils so far along with all the other parts, no effect. That's why I'm so depressed about it. Coming to wits end. "Zhong Mei Productions" 21492... MORE

Hi Everyone, Still have major problem with no spark at plugs. Have followed all advice I recieved on here but to no avail. I had only parked her to rebuild the brake system and now the darn thing won't start. Here's what I've been reccomended from the list: Check battery cables (replaced positive side to starter solenoid) check grounds (cleaned and tighten all ground straps to engine) Check coil (have tried two new coils) Have new coil, new cap, new condenser and points and rotor, new wires, but still can only follow voltage up to distributor, no spark at... Reg... Did you disturb the coil hookup between the time you parked it for the brake job and now? If not, what has changed in this particular respect? Nothing. If the hookup was right then.......? Could the coil have suddenly failed? Sure! What the heck, Reg...you've changed everything else ignition-wise and coils are normally checked by substitution anyway, unless you've got someone with an ignition analyzer around. I would suspect it though were I in your situation. Get an upgraded one while you're at it? Maybe a Lucas "Sport" or MSD "Blaster"? Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 21491... MORE

Cap'n, What I think may have happened is that in adjusting the parking brake for me, the guy overadjusted or overtightened the rear drum brakes. I guess as I drove, they got hot and started dragging. When they started heating up, it felt like my clutch was losing it's grip but, then I smelled that hot brake shoe odor. It was as if I was driving with my foot on the brakes. That's all I can figure that it was. I backed the rear drums off with a little adjustment and she's rolling easy again. Jack '63 RHD Sprite... MORE

Jim.... The cars, despite outward appearance, are basically the same internally, including wiring, etc. You can keep the old generator with it's mechanical tach drive though you may have to fabricate or "bend" an existing part! You can switch to the later "dark face" gauges (electric tach) & alternator if you like as well or go electric on the tach and simply replace the "face" of the later electic tach with the Bugeye "face". Just gently pull off and replace the indicator needles...they come right off and go back on with a gentle pull and push. You will most... MORE
