Hi Brad, The PO changed Poppy to RHD, did some minor repair work, and had the garage across the road from him do the paint job. The only body bits to have been replaced were the driver's floor pan (was passengers in the US, so got wet from time to time) and the cross member under the seats. The rest of the body is original. So is the engine, although I had the bottom shells replaced some years ago. She also runs on unleaded fuel with no problems. Tomorrow, Sunday, if the weather holds out, (she is Totally topless!!)... Hi All, I have two requests for help, one basic - the other related to tools. The basic question is: I have stripped the car and will have re-painted the body soon. In terms of mechanical parts, is there an order of rebuild that I should be guided by. What do i put back first? My guess would be : Brake pipes, wiring harness, fuel tank, rear suspension/brakes, front suspension/brakes, engine/gearbox, ancillary electricals (heater, wipers), dash, trim, then seats. Or doesn't it matter much? Secondly, I am going to buy a sander. Is a random orbit sander worth the... MORE

Hi Adam All this is a matter of opinion and I am not sure if you are looking for a Midget rather than a Sprite or either. The truth is that the Midget is a copy of the Sprite, the first car being the MK 1 Sprite (frogeye) designed by Healey using Austin mechanicals. All the cars built since the frogeye use basically the same body and floor pan but with cosmetic exterior modifications. Most of the modifications to the car were driven by legislation or an attempt to keep up with the competition and maintain market share and... MORE

Ah, the noises!! Honestly don't know for sure, Brad. There are springs in the clutch disc (4) as well as the pedal return spring in the cockpit (or pedal box in the case of the Bugeye). My feeling is the cause of this noise will become obvious when get the clutch apart. Let me know; I can learn something here. Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 10980... MORE

What is the average life of your clutch components? We have had the 68 for about 6 or 7 years now, and I have not ever changed out anything in the drivetrain. I have been hearing from time to time, as sound like a spring popping when I have taken off from stop signs and stop lights. Now last night, the clutch decided to get difficult. It won't shift easily and makes a low growling when the pedal is depressed. FWIW, I ALWAYS shift into neutral when sitting still. For all you new owners who are not yet driving... MORE

Jorge , The old MG records are kept at Gaydon , which is the British Leyland herita ge car museum complex (Now owned by Ford, I think), It's 10 miles from wher e I live. You can buy a heritage certificate from them which will tell you when the car was made, when it was despatched, the colour of paint and inte rior trim etc. I think that all you need is the chassis Nr. (VIN Nr.) costs about =A325 fo r a certificate I think. This is to pay a historian/ record keeper employed by the museum to... MORE

The Mk1 exhaust is basically a straight pipe with a kink at the end. 'Having one made' will involve the exhaust man taking a length of pipe off the rack, bending it (all of 20 seconds in the bender) , welding a silencer to the end (another 20 seconds) and fitting it to the car. A Midget has to be the easiest car in the world to make an exhaust for. Anyway Margaret, my car's a Mk2 Sprite, does that count as a Mk1 Midget? please? :-) Growler "Grant Bowyer" 10783... MORE

I took the advice from ED in SD and checked the pin where the pedal attaches to the master cylinder even though I replaced it last June. Guess what, this is where my problem was. The pin was of soft metal and had sheared off on one side and was just about to snap on the other. The pedal was moving almost half way to the floor before pushing the shaft in the master clutch cylinder. After cleaning up the damaged holes and bushing them, I put a bolt (with a shank) in it and now she shifts better... MORE

Mike Picked this up after wading through several hundred off topic e-mails and discarding most of them. In case no one else replied. Divide watts by voltage to get amps so a 60 watt bulb takes 60 divide by 12 = 5 amps provided there is 12 volt on the bulb terminals. However more important is to measure the battery volts at the battery terminals with the lamps on then measure the voltage actually at the bulb terminals. The difference is the volt drop in the wiring, connectors and switches. I guess 0.5 v is the most you want.... MORE

Hello, Before you start, make sure that you take pictures of everthing and I do mean everything! If you are doing this restoration in your spare time, like I did, it can take over 3 years to get done and no matter how good the memory is today, that picture will save you down the road. In addition, as you take items off put them in paper bags and write on the outside what is what ,plastic bags are great but even the sharpee markers come off. As for books spring for the haynes manual as well as the... MORE

Hi Guys Has anyone fitted a re-conditioned rack to a 66 Sprite. When I took the old rack off I found a metal plate on the front of the cross member under the passenger side rack supporting bracket. The Guy at the rack suppliers said it should not be there and told me not to fit it, this part is not shown in any of the parts catalogues I have seen. I fitted the rack without the plate but find the steering to be a bit tight (maybe it should be with a new rack). I have now found... MORE

You may want to check the wear at the pivot point of your clutch pedal where it connects to the master cilinder, inside the pedal box.I had this problem and found the hole in the end of pedal egg shaped. Just a 1/4" play at the top will translate to several inches of travel at the pedal. The fix is a bit of a pain as the pedal assembly has to come out. You of course can replace with a new oneif you want but i drilled mine out and installed a brass bushing[cut of peice of tubing]greased and away... MORE

could sure use help from some of you professors out there. I read the messages religiously, particularly one I saw from Cap'n Bob regarding front end improvements. so, when I saw that the rubber bushings were rotted on my Bugeye I decided to replace with Nylatron bushings. No problem replacing bushing around trunnion, but I can't figure out how to get the inner bushings out of the wishbone. I removed the coil spring, tapped out the pins which gives me access to the outer bushings. But I don't see how to get to the inner bushing without removing the... MORE
