I did mention it was a "Pseudo" Race Car... didn't I? Standard 1500cc engine Crane FireBall electronic Ignition and PS-20 Coil Weber Downdraft Carb w/ K&N filter Pacesetter Headers Monza Free-flow exhaust system Standard Transmission and 3.9:1 rear end Roll bar supposedly came from a midget, but I had to do a major modification of my driver's seat and headrest to get the seat far enough back to allow me to drive. The top has been permanently removed (and will be sold shortly). This is now a fair weather car only... with a tarp in the trunk for emergencies.... MORE

For those "Restoration Purists" on this list, what I am doing to my Midget may be a bit of a shock. But.... for everyone else, check out my Midget that I am going to turn into a Pseudo Race Car. When finished, the main sponsor will be my online mall, Mall-Rat.com.... the sides will have a big "76" on the doors, since it is a '76 midget. The rest of the car will be decked out in "Nascar type" fashion with "sponsor" decals for K&N filter, Crane FireBall ignitions, Bosch spark plugs, Prolong, Pepsi, etc... to match my car... MORE

Bill, The pistons MUST rise and fall freely! Anything else you do before you correct that is a waste of time. Two typical causes: 1. The bell is slightly torques or off center. 2. Non centered jet. This will cause the needle to bind up. Remedy for #1- loosen the hold down screws and remove bell and piston. Throughly wipe them both free of any debris, dirt etc. Make sure there is nothing lodged in the piston grooves. Reassemble the piston into the bell and push /pull, listening for any scraping/ abrasive sounds. you should only hear air whistling... MORE

No, I'm sure that it is white with a brown stripe, it is part of the harness. The wires for the Dynamo are there with connectors. I'm also confused about the fuel pump, it has the negative lead connected to chassis, from everything I've read this car should have a positive ground. Any thoughts? Jim Davis 8763... MORE

Condensors are so cheap you might as well replace it. Coils are not too bad, you could buy one and fit it, if the problem still o ccurs then once you've found the real cause either swap it out again and pu t it into stock or just leave it. "Jeremy Cogman" 8757... MORE

Thanks for all the help on this one. Tried to identify the problem the following morning: still wouldn't start; the fuel was OK and the pump was working; all was dry inside the distributor; there was no spark at the plugs or in the distributor; all the wires looked fine; points were slightly out - nothing major. Anyway, took it apart to look further, could not find anything, so put it back together and... it worked. OK, I know that the problem may well return, so I'll probably have to replace the coil and/or condensor. My question is: is... MORE

Ya know, Jason- I read the first part of your post on this and couldn't help but relate your warm-up style to the black oil but, there is much more to consider so "maybe" or "maybe not" with respect to these particular thoughts on this as to how they MIGHT relate to each other, but here it goes, anyway. Bear in mind, modern oils are "detergent" as well as "ashless dispersant" types; they "clean" in the first instance, and "hold" contamination within the oil "in suspension" to be drained away at the next oil change. The "older" the engine... MORE

Has anyone ever had to remove the steering lock assembly? The haynes manual says you need to drill out the two top portions... seems pretty brutal to me. Then again, what good would a lock be if all you had to do was remove the column and then remove two philips head screws. Any suggestions? -Brett "Brett LaCroix" 8703... MORE

The '76 MG Midget I am fixing up was purchased 2 years ago, driven on 3 very short drives, and then died when I parked it to start the body work. Fast forward to present day and the stock 1500 is being transformed to one with Weber downdraft, headers, monza free flow exhaust system, fireball electronic ignition and sport coil, not to mention a completely rebuild engine, master cylinders, suspension, etc.... Prior to purchasing this vehicle, I had never driven one... and I doubt if I put a total of 10 miles on it after I bought it, before... MORE

I love my midget except for one thing, It dosnt like cruesing at highway speeds. Needs another gear or a higher rear end gear.I know some people have changed the trans mission but has any one changed the ring and pinion? If so was the change a happy one. Thanks "stanley hill" 8674... MORE

The B engine is much taller and several inches longer. The gearshifdt lever is around 5 or 6 inches farther back too, if I rememeber correctly. There are many other better choices for size weight and power. Gerard "gerardchateau" 8670... MORE

Looking for some help. Driving home this evening in the pouring rain (this is Yorkshire, after all), having just filled the car with fuel. After driving through some roadworks, the engine faltered as if it was missing on one cylinder when I accelerated: it cleared up after 30 seconds. After 10 minutes cruising at 70mph, I started to slow down for an exit. Suddenly the engine stopped running totally: still had power to lights wipers, etc. Turned over on the starter, but engine would not fire. My first thoughts were a loose electrical connection, but no obvious breaks under... MORE

The rear uses lever shocks unless someone coverted it to tube shocks. Even then, I think you'll have difficulty finding replacements. Your best bet is to contact Peter C. at World Wide Auto Parts. I'm getting ready to fix the left hand sag in my 79 midget. I'm planning to replace all four springs, and the front and rear shocks. Can I get regular commercial (ie Monroe) shocks for the rear, or do I need special MG shocks? Is there anything else I should do to make the suspension a lot tougher/better handling? Any other suggestions? Thx in advance.. "chuibuddy" 8631... MORE

Just had the alignment on my 76 done today. Off to get my tracking checked tomorrow after a steering boot change. I seem to remember the last time I had it done the fact the I had it as a measurement (0-3mm) insteead of an angle threw them. Does anyone know what the angle is? While we're on the subject does anyone have any thoughts as to whether this is ideal on a more or less standard setup? Jeremy "Jeremy Cogman" 8614... MORE

I was hoping just to put the engine back in ( I was told it was a good engine ( #1) before the car was taken of the road, a crash to the front offside ) I will remove the head and sump , but at the moment am concentrating on the bodywork and suspension. I also have another engine (#2), again told that it was good before the car was laid up 6/7 years ago. Unfortunately the deceased owner had removed the engine from the car and it had been stored on a damp garage floor. The PO... MORE

I had one pair rebulit by a machine shop which pressed out the pins, bored the door halves, pressed bronze bushings into the door halves and installed new pins. Elegant, but expensive. The second pair I rebuilt via home blacksmith engineering. I pressed out the pin, then drilled the door half and one ear of the body half to 5/16". The other ear of the body half I tapped 5/16" thread. Then assembled with a 5/16" bolt, marked the bolt, removed it and cut the threaded and head ends so they would be flush when installed, then cut a... MORE

Ian, Paul Asgeirsson of Portland Oregon runs a business called Morriservice. He makes a very well made kit that uses a Datsun 210 (4 or 5 speed) to fit Spridgets and Morris Minors. I have the kit in my '72 Midget and I love it. The best part is the Datsun does not require chassis mods, while the Seirra box does. The Datsun coversion is considerably less expensive too. Rivergate makes a kit for the Datsun too, but I prefer Paul's. His customer support is great too. You can reach Paul at PAsgeirsson@... . Tell him I sent you.... MORE

Two weeks ago, someone came on this list enquiring about the cost of replacing a clutch and other items on their 1976 MG Midget. Since I own a 1976 myself and the car was located in my state, I decided to offer her $500 "sight unseen" for the car, if she wanted to sell it as is. I didn't know much about the car except that it hasn't been running for 3 years and it was parked in a garage. At 8:30pm, Thursday night, I was at her house, with a tow truck and $500... pushing a leaf and... MORE
