I've had similar problems since I had the seats recovered and webbing replaced. The 30-year-old seats allowed by 6'4" frame to squeeze in without too many problems (despite weighing a "bit" more than I did when I bought it 17 years ago). Mine is a height problem, but the solution is similar I would first try to remove some of the padding/springing from the seat back. If this does not work, remove the seatback all together, and fix a skinny one with just enough padding to the rear bulkhead. Try this first with an old/junk seat to see if... MORE

I have a '73 Midget, been tearing it down, hoping to paint & get it back on the road this spring. I'm not an expert by any means, just started this project last year when I bought this road worthy MG. I've only been buying parts from Long Motor (Victoria British) but there must be other mail order suppliers. Can anybody give me some web sites of suppliers to go to? At this point I'm mostly looking for trim, interior & exterior type of parts. Mechanically the car is in good running order and I'm not tearing it down... MORE

Tim, There is no need to disconnect any thing else whilst working on the pump unless the car is on a steep forwards slope raising the fuel tank above pump inlet level. The oil level in the block is below the mounting hole. If you want to be PC then disconnect battery to avoid sparks etc. As the hand primer is working is follows that that pump itself is working. No need to strip - unless you are into that sort of thing - or you wish to clean it. The common problem is wear on the pump lever... MORE

Bill, If you think you were confused before, you better sit down. First of all, unless you think the car is two cars welded together. There WON'T be any difference between the floor pan number and the shock mount. (I guess you didn't see my earlier post), No, you won't be able to see it from underneath. Next, '68's did not have 3 wipers, they only had two until Dec '68 when they changed to 3. The HUN number you list from your title is a BODY number not a chassis number and is not tracked by BMIHT. OK, sorry, List friends, please be a little more patient than usual with me........, Im not dumb!!!! LOL !!!! just some "idiotness" about English language!!!! haha!!! LOL !!!! So........... -The A pillar (hinge side) driver's (US) side plate shows: GU N359287 P -The B pillar (door handle side of the door) has a larger plate with the VIN and month/year. (missing on my LBC)(just 2 clinch separated about 4 inches........) -VIN plate between the dashboard and the windscreen, shows: AR N GAN 5UD 136030 G -Cant find the one on the right hand side where the shock mounts towards... The motor serial number is on an embossed plateon the block, just below and near the number one spark plug. The only way to know if your motor has the original serial number is to get a BMIHT certificate. The number is generally in the same srial range as you chassis number but can be off be several hundred digits. Please be seated for a reading from the book of Horler. "Yea, for in january of 1964 was the Mk3 created. And the chassis number was HAN8 for the blessed Sprites and GAN3 for the slightly-more-porky Midgets. And there was much shouting and praising of the uprated engine and improved hood. The first HAN8 car bore the number of the beast thus; 38829. (being, in total, HAN8-38829). And so Abingdon begat spridgets until it came to pass that in late January of 1966, car number HAN8-58500 was created. Followed by 58501. And so forth unto the end of the... MORE

Jorge, I meant to clarify this in my earlier post and forgot. Later cars like yours DO NOT have the VIN plate where I stated, but on the left hand door B-pillar instead. Those two holes on the chassisdo remain unchamged though. The VIN number, and month/year is also stamped on that plate. The other tow spots on the chassis DO still have the VIN numbers there, though they may not be easily visible. There is also a VIN plate between the dashboard and the windscreen. Gerard "gerardchateau" 7469... MORE

Bill, That is incorrect. The VIN/Chassis number is stamped on a plate screwed to the frame rail below the carbs. The number stamped on the shock mounting plate behind the right hand shock should match exactly. If not, somethings amiss. The number on the footwell below the bonnet hinge is a body number and has no real relation to the VIN number, though they are sometime close in series. BMIHT does not even record that number. I'm not certain what year they started it, but the right hand footwell, just in front of the crossmember, has the VIN number... MORE

OK, as you all know my english language is poor one, so be patient........ The actual Vin contest makes me anxious about the real numbers of my Midget........so I started watching arround..... The car is a US spect one, buyed in California during 1999, but as you probably dont know Argentine customs use to change numbers of motor and chassis!!!! dont know really why.........(also corruption there??...ummm YES!!!! ) So I started looking where listers mentioned......and I found that the plate screwed to the frame rail below the carbs, is not there.....just two holes separated aprox: two inches.......... Cant find... MORE

I thought if it was a Mark 3 Sprite Or a Mark 2 midget onwards then the Vin was stamped on the right hand side where the shock mounts towards the back of that plate. At least thats where mine is. Brandon. BWesterley@... 7470... MORE

Hi Tim I also have a 66 but I have a good 30mm gap between the tail pipe and bumper (even though the tail pipe is angled upwards). I put the complete system on about a year ago, whole thing only cost about ?30 (from the B-Hive) and was easy to fit, so it's provably not worth paying to have yours modified. My advice would be to check the brackets, there should be one attached to the rear box and another one forward of the rear box near the spring hanger. If the bracket near the spring hanger is... Hello Can anybody help? I've recently bought a semi restored sprite from the local council that was offered for sale/auction. I bid =A35 pounds as a joke and now the cars mine. My problem is the bodywork has been totally restored and resprayed minus the chassis plate. In the boot of the car was a set of number plates, so I filled in the v62 form from the post office and i've now got the registration document. It states that the car was first registered in april 66, the engine is a 1098cc 'a' series, but the chassis no.... MORE

Dear Bree, Wow, you must be setting at the computer right at this moment, you replied to my message so fast. It is a dry county and the woman in the station told me it was dry because people there were too mean and when they drank they shot... MORE

Gary, Everything you listed is seems correct for a '66 Mark III Sprite except for the chassis number. The last MkIII carried chassis number HAN-8- 57945. T he MkIII series started with HAN-8- 38829. As someone else already commented look at the upper end of the right shock absorber mount plate and your real chassis number will be stamped there. Ah! You've got me there. A good SU book is the one thing I havent got, although really all I'd want was a list of which needles/springs were fitted to which cars... So I could go to the scrapyard and pillage all the SU's there. I do have a nifty wee program which sorts out all the SU needles and tells you which type you need based on measuring the size... Give me a yell if you'd like it. Cheers! G "Grant Bowyer" 7330... MORE

Yes. With the port restricted, when you 'floor it' the carburettor would rise slowly due to the restricted flow of air into the space below the piston. Varying the weight of oil in the damper would be the correct way to achieve the same effect. The spring controls how far the piston lifts due to airflow through the carb. Fitting a stronger spring will only ensure that at a given airflow the piston sits lower than it should. For example, if you bored out your engine, you may find that the piston hits the top of its travel at,... MORE

LOL! Good luck Gerard! And I suppose you would prefer the cream-coloured steering wheel too. LOL, Growler- Wish I could help you out on your pillaging but besides the AN needle for the Sprite carbs, I've not a clue. Isn't there an SU carb. supplier (somebody bought SU out "over there" just recently, as I recall from previous autox.team spridget posts) in the UK who might have this info? Web search, perhaps? As to different needles available by measuring at the 8 or 9 stations, I have the Teglerizer site for this, though I do thank you for the offer. And I definitely thankyou for explaining very clearly the functions of this SU carb... MORE

TO: Grant B. (Explanation of SU principals) It makes absolutely perfect sense. Read you loud and clear! Now, let's see if I can use this information in practical terms which will show whether I understand the prinicipal well enough to apply them to my application. So, for a supercharged (Judson, fr'instance) engine, you would probably lean toward a pretty heavy spring to begin with, considering the engine's potential breathing ability with the blower. And considering the potential for rate of change (pretty rapid with the blower) a pretty heavy oil (say 20w-50?) would probably be a good weight to... MORE
