Yup your right Primer is porous and it will hold water. I just did the rear end of my car last weekend and I scraped, sanded, primed and then painted with flat black rustolium before putting the undercoating on. Hi All, Just when it seems I'm on a roll everything goes to Hell fast. I just got my "Leaky Lady" back on the road after engine removal to find out where all the oil was coming from and now the ignition lite is staying on and my battery is dead just about every time I try to start the engine. The shocks wont make any difference to ride height- their role is to damp the oscillations while the suspension is moving, they have no effect when stationary. Sounds more like you've come across MO$$'s famous quality control system. You either have one dodgy spring, or someone's sent you one 1500 spring and one 1275 spring. Some things to do to diagnose the problem- Swap your front springs over. if the sag is now on teh passenger side, its the front springs. Swap the rear springs over- if the sag changes sides, its your new Mo$$ springs at fault. One... MORE


Well you folks hit on 2 problems I must address this winter. I need to replace the windscreen on my 1500. Sounds like this will be quite an experience. Also need to replace the rear springs. Sags on the driver's side by 3/4 inch. Is there a physical difference in 1550 springs verses 1275. Say if they sent me a mixed set can you tell before going through the installation process. BTW since the rebuild the engine it is getting stronger by the day. Idle has smoothed out and lots of power compared to before. I have over 700... MORE


Hello Everyone I have a 1971 MG Midget Gan 5 UB 94654 G I have just replaced both rear leaf springs with new ones from MOSS. When I got the car back I had a problem with the drivers side sagging alot, so I just thought that it was the Shock and it was shot. So I replaced the old shocks with the Tube convertion SPAX kit. Sarah and I went to a scarily deserted Brands yesterday, I think the competitors outnumbered the spectators. James did great and managed to finish further up than he staterd (I think). It was a great race with Peter May battling for the lead with a chap whose name I have forgotten and snatching victory coming out of the final bend. It was also very intersting looking at various trick front and rear suspension on the spridgets in the paddock. The intake port on a Harley is so poorly designed that a 'turbulator' probably would help. Harley ports are relatively huge, and so the incoming gas/air charge moves slowly, allowing some of the fuel to drop out of the air and form a puddle on the floor of the port. A turbulator might possibly help atomise the fuel a little better, allowing more of it to stay in suspension for longer. (Not sure about modern Harleys- are they fuel injected? or still carburettor? As far as I know, they're still probably using Wick carburettors...) HOWEVER... A Midget's engine's ports... MORE

Ah, there you are; Hugh Acosta! Huge, in a previous post (yesterday or the day before, I forget which) you stated you could not find the oil pressure reliefe valve under the oil pressure reliefe valve spring. I, and another lister, advised there should definitely be a valve beneath the spring and I recommended you renew the entire assembly for the hell of it, since this is just cheap insurance. Since normal valves can "stick", I also mentioned that some LBCers replace the valve with a similiarly sized ball bearing. Hope you took our posts to heart in the... MORE


Rick Moss part for a 1275 which I believe you have is 460-155 oil pressure refief valve $4.75, 329-185 spring $2.25. The pressure relief valve looks like a 50 cal bullet with the pion flattened. If it's missing that is your trouble Doug 77 Michigaan "Doug Pletcher" 5595... MORE


I saw a fellow at a Mini Mania swap meet in Milpitas 2 years ago who had a 2.0L Ford in a 72 or 73 Midget setup with a side pipe exhaust system, mid cam and a set of Webers. He did I real nice conversion... didn't cut any corners. And I can tell you from first hand experience that the 2.0L will walk all over the 2.3L anyday, I drove both. I had a Pinto wagon w/ a 2.0l and it screamed... espicially after I added an Ak Miller turbo kit and Quicker suspension kit. 140 MPH is... MORE


Rick- The oil pressure reliefe valve set-up consists of two parts; spring and valve. If you can't see the valve "down there", it probably was left out!! There is an oil pressure relief device on the block. It is made up of four components, a cover, a spring, a plunger and a seat. Check to make sure the seat is pressed in the block. This can be over looked on rebuilding. If the plunger is too loose in the bore it may be hanging open. The plunger can be replaced by a 9/16 ball bearing. I pulled the front suspension apart to install new king pins and found the shocks to be in bad shape. Both of them have a 4 inch or so "dead" spot in the middle of travel where there is absolutely no resistance. So I just ordered some rebuilt shocks from World Wide Auto Parts and will let everyone know how they work. In order to adjust the depth (and the appropriate end position of the emblem) keeping in mind that the knob needs to be tight enough to grip w/o coming loose, you need to put something in the end of the hole of the knob, thus limiting it's travel. The glue idea is a good one, but once you put it in there, it might be a snot adjusting the total depth accurately. Had several Heralds in the 60/70s, 948 saloon, 1250 saloon, estate and convertable. Unique at the time as it had a chassis. Like most convertables of the time they leaked and rotted from the inside out. Looked the business though. Chassis rotted away, had several outriggers fall off but the sections are simple and easy to replace. Actually had a chassis break in half driving through South London. Aaaahh memories! My first 2 cars were Heralds (though saloons) - learned a very great deal through having to work on them / fix them myself! From memory - mechanicals are all pretty straightforward / robust - apart from arms / bushes in the rear suspension??? Main thing -as Margaret has already mentioned - is chassis members - particularly rear outriggers - and sills. Marvellous access to all front end oily bits with that one-piece flip-up bonnet (check the catches) - a fantastic turning circle and lovely wooden dash. =A3600 for a Herald Convertable is good, especially with a full MOT. So lon g as the chassis is structurally sound, the rest can be dealt with as and when necessary. I personally don't feel the need for originality, more HP, better brakes, better handling are all improvements in the true Healey tradition. However, having said that I am glad that other are preserving the cars in their original state. It is preserving an important part of the history of these wonderful little cars.
