Bob, Took your advice and added the gear oil at the right side damper on the steering rack while squeezing the boot and it worked fine although it took some time to fill it. The oil got all the way across to the steering gear and the left ball joint. No leaks so far!! Thanks . CFickmour@... 4740... MORE

Has anyone heard of a 1275cc Midget Goldseal engine being sprayed Gold! or green with a gold rocker cover? My frogeye has the latter. You can see an image of it on the photos section I don't know if that's hoew it came or if the PO sprayed it himself Gary L AN5L(now RHD) "Gary Lazarus" 4712... MORE

Arnold- Oh, stock Metro! OK You already have recommendations for "basic" needle strarting point I previously sent you along with jet and spring rec. as well and know turbo-Metro set-up is suck through from prior mail as well. So, you are off to fine start. Understand you are fabricating a manifold a la the Dean approach. Good show! Yes, Arnold, do keep me advised and I will get the Aldon advance map to you over the internet ASAP, I promise. Cap'n. Bob '61 :{) PilotRob@... 4705... MORE

I take the spring loading cap off and pour it in through there. Then I pump some grease in and run the rack on a mixture of the two, belt & braces. "Jeremy Cogman" 4641... MORE

David I recall you have a 1500? The 1500 rack (& late 1275) is lubricated with grease. Early 'upsidedown LHD Morris Minor' racks (on RHD Spridgets) are the ones which are lubricated with oil... Mine is an early rack - leaks like the Exxon Valdez.... James james@... 4582... MORE

Hi David Next time you rebuild your rack, fill it with oil and notice the difference- you'll wonder why you didnt do it sooner. Lovely fluid steering, light, sharp and responsive. You dont know what you're missing. Cheers Grant "Grant Bowyer" 4541... MORE

Hi Chaps, Where have you been.............I hear you all cry.............no!............oh well..........LOL Can you guys help me out again, please? You will remember that recently I installed a fast road 1330cc engine in the Arkley.......well mostly all is well, except now it seems a little reluctant to start, particularly if it is warm, or hot, and when it does start from cold I usually get a big puff of blue smoke. Once it has "coughed" all is ok and runs like a dream, with bags of power and acceleration. Question, Why the blue smoke and can I do anything about... MORE

Sorry for this long and annoying post, but I need some real basic help with my 1275 '68 Sprite. Here goes: First, I recently replaced the original coil with a Bosch blue coil, due to some start-up problems. I also replaced the plugs, and the distributor cap and ignition wires. Now it starts up great, but the idle speed is super-high, and seems to get higher and higher as long as I leave it running, and also, the engine gets super-hot very quickly. As far as I can tell, the choke is not stuck, and I can't get it... MORE

Hello, Arnold- Unless I miss my guess, you about already have the "right" needle, if you got the HIF44 off a turbo Metro. Wouldn't happen to be a "BDD", would it? I know this because I am going the same way on my application as well and so is Mike MacLean (maybe, in his case, he's considering a 1275 with 5 speed now, not sure about the blower part) and have been doing the necessary research to get "basic" profiles sorted. Thanx to Mike MacLean, acquired fabricated manifold to place between HIF44 and Judson intake manifold. When I found... MORE

David- Use of grease in steering rack just makes the wheels harder to turn in really cold weather, as far as I can tell. Used to use it myself but got tired of getting hernias while making turns (company insurance started getting upset with continuous claims for same service! Figured this guy has some "set"!) Been an "oil man" ever since! :) Cap'n. Bob '61 :{) PilotRob@... 4564... MORE

David, I thought I might try greese also, but I was not sure the greese would get to the steering rack and the ball joint on the other side of the assembly. Have you opened the gaiter on the steering rack side to see if it lubricates the far side parts?? Thanks to all for the advice, Red Devil CFickmour@... 4525... MORE

Richard, Please, please, please, don't take this the wrong way - but I guess you were born after they finished building Spridgets and haven't had the experience of many 'old f*rts' who have had to live with older style engineering and design. If Corvette and Porsche engines go back to the 1930/40/50's styles of design and engineering they will probably go back to running in with a straight 20's - 30's oil! :-) (LOL) When running in do not use a Mulitgrade oil, if you can avoid it. These too are designed to be a better oil and give... MORE

Thanx, Outcast- I hear that. Good advice on break-in oil as many others also say same thing about straight weights vs. multi-grades for break-in purposes. Been filling the rack through the gaitors for years/ Wish I could find the right oil fitting for the nipple on the rack, though. Cap'n. Bob '61 :{) PilotRob@... 4509... MORE

Red, Just rebuilt my 60, I refilled at the damper. There is a cap at the left hand side that unscrews , As I added the 90 wt I squeezed the boots and the suction brought the oil in . Hopefully I havent botched the whole thing but it appears to have worked. Bob 60 AN5 TAMPA MTGBRKR1@... 4493... MORE

Just replaced the ball joint boot on my 1959 bugeye. Now need to add 90 wt. gear oil to the steering rack to replace what was lost. Manual says inject it through the nipple on the right side of the rack. Is there a special grease type gun I need to do this?? Are there fluid type cartriges to insert in a regular gun? My local auto stores haven't been able to help. Thanks, Red Devil CFickmour@... 4488... MORE

Laura, Chris, Peter, David, and all listers, Thank you very much for your information! My reply took some longer as I was abroad for work. I have just booked my crossing and found the Camping and Caravenning site in Chertsey Laura referred to. I'll call them tomorrow for a reservation. Anybody else planning to camp there ? Might be fun on Saturday already. I'll try to dress up my (boss's) car as a Midget, maybe I'll be allowed on the circuit, you never know (spirit of MR2 should be OK, not?). 1.WALKING I checked some maps (thanks again for... MORE

No, Brent, not at all, though your asking indicates a high level of inquisitive intelligence, obviously. First of all, "George" is flying the airplane "monitored" by my trusty First Officer. My arms are around the F/A holding the newspaper in the appropriate proper manner (no "quartering" for me). The F/A (who thinks she is "flying" the machine) is holding the yoke with one hand and feeding me coffee with the other, "on command" (after all, I am the Captain!). This is especially challenging in moderate to sever turbulence, as you might well imagine. The "key" lies with the F/A... MORE

One of my competition engines is a +0.020" full race engine (~310 degrees duration ~0.5" lift, 1.5 rockers etc). I had done 2 meetings since the last stripdown where bearings and rings were done, head and crank were crack tested etc. I had used this engine in my bugeye in the races and rallies before the rebuild. After the rebuild it was in the Midget. I took the car to the Australian National Sprite challenge, held in Mallala in Sth Australia. At that meeting (3 days over Easter), we had two days at the track, one day in a... MORE

You're mistaken. We are not weak. Indeed, we are strong in ways that cannot be measured by arsenals. IN PAIN Yes, we're in pain now. We are in mourning and we are in shock. We're still grappling with the unreality of the awful thing you did, still working to make ourselves understand that this isn't a special effect from some Hollywood blockbuster, isn't the plot development from a Tom Clancy novel. Both in terms of the awful scope of their ambition and the probable final death toll, your attacks are likely to go down as the worst acts of... MORE

Over The Line I know you've heard all the rhetoric and news reporting about the deplorable situation which took place in New York and Washington today. This is not politics, this is not a repressed people trying to get the attention of an uncaring world. This is none of the things which are usually associated with the righting of wrongs. This is simple hate, pure insanity and mass murder not seen on the planet since the days of Hitler, Stalin and Pol Pot. We all know who did this. It may take a few days to place the blame... MORE

You've missed a bolt, Terry. In addition to the three bolts in the side footwell (lined up vertically near the A-pillar) there's another bolt in the side of the footwell near the accelerator pedal (RHD) or clutch pedal (LHD). The bolt near the windscreen does not have a captive nut. Undo it with a spanner. And that's it! Good luck, G "Grant Bowyer" 4287... MORE

That's what I'm thinking.... You should be able to move the carb up and down a small amount - although don't loosen it too much... Do you have thackery washers or rubber cups on the manifold bolts (thackery washers are like mini 'springs' which provide tension on the carb but allow sligt movement - rubber cups are for a similar purpose) If you just have plain washers then the carb won't be able to move...
