Hey oscarsprite. Please let us know what you finally had to do to remedy your clutch problem. The suggestions all make sense but remember to start with the simple ones first. good luck and thanks. Ian "Ian & Cathy" 15947... MORE

The cylinders are 4 years old, but without use, they needs to be rebuilt every couple of years. Without use, the seals swell and stick. Your letter reads like it isn't a daily driver, which those used daily, or at least more often that we drive them, the clutch and brake system work for many years but just sitting, they go bad. Sounds like its time to rebuild the slave cylinder.....about $5.00 USD for the seal kit (if memory serves)....otherwise there might be something awry in the pivot for the throwout causing it to bind David A. I have a '59 Bugeye and the Master cly and slave cly. are fairly new ( 4 years) Fluid is clear, no leaks. The other day I decided to drive around the area and get some gas. After about two block and 6 shifts the clutch would not disengage. The pedal was hard, with little to no movement down from the top. The car would not move as the clutch was still engaged. Engine still running, shifted into all gears, no go. Got it home with a tow from a golf cart, and it is now up on jack... MORE

I had a similar problem in our 68 in which the seal had lost small bits of the edge and causing the slave to stick in the open position. As I recall, the bugeye has a steel line from the master all the way to the slave, so there is no chance of the line collapsing like with the 67 and later cars that have the rubber line beween the slave and the frame rail. I may be wrong, but that is my suggestion. Brad "Brad Fornal" 15901... MORE

im looking for imfo engine/transmission combo to put in my 75 midget.Have seen the rotary and the datsun swap,Does any one know of some newer engines more current, or maybe some front drive units that can bolt up to rear drive transmission .The v6 swaps dont interest me. David, I have put an Ital engine in my Mk IV sprite, but I also put in the gearbox with a Spitfire overdrive gearbox. Doing it this way means you have to change the front plate with the engine mounts and cut away some of the bodywork in the tunnel area to get the clutch housing and bigger g'box to fit. If you stay with the standard g'box, you still need to change the front plate and also the rear plate, flywheel etc. The distributor drive is different and the oil filter is in a different place but these... it's not a straight swop, because the scuttle top panel arrangement isn't exactly the same, especially where in the area of the windscreen pillars and where it meets the doors, but I would imagine it could be made to fit with a bit of ingenuity. When it comes to instruments, the later type will fit, but if you wanted original Frogeye (or early, 948cc MkII Sprite) instruments, you'd have to source a dynamo with cable drive gearbox for the rev counter. I think this was covered in abstract with the "can I remove my transmission without pulling my engine" thread. The answer would be yes. With some creativity with a Torch, Plasma Cutter, welder, grinder, and paint, anything is possible! The thought of my Ford Pickup Truck that I am currently Hot Rodding comes to mind. You can fit what ever you want, where ever with some ingenuity and creativity. Oh, also lots of practice. Israel Find the brake master cylinder, follow the pipe until it comes to a four way junction (i.e. splits three ways, one to each front wheel and one to the back axle) and sitting on top of that junction you will find a small round pressure switch screwed in to the top. it has two wires leading from it, or should have, and is the brake light switch, operated by fluid pressure. They can, and do, seize solid. After disconnecting, test with a meter or wires, battery and a bulb etc whilst friend applies pressure to the break pedal ............ MORE

Not a stupid question at all. pedal near the gear stick is clutch, middle brake and accelerator nearest drivers door. "geojon" 15763... MORE

A guy I work with asked me a question the other day that I couldn't answer. I'm sure this group can. I know that cars in the UK had right hand drive so that you shifted with the left hand but are the pedals reversed as well? That is, is the gas nearest the transmission tunnel and the clutch nearest the door, like left hand drive cars? Although I've seen RHD cars before, I must admit that I never really looked that closely. "coachbad" 15762... MORE

I've just purchased a '75 Midget which has a 1296cc spitfire block from '69 or '70 installed which I discovered from the # stamped on the block. All of the history on who did this "rebuild" and exactly what they did is unknown. Can someone help explain parts compatibility on LBC'S for me? Does this 1296cc spitfire block accept the head, intake manifold, exhaust manifold, clutch, tranny, etc, etc, etc... of the 1500cc that originally came with the car? I'm new to LBC's and am trying to figure out how much 1500cc stuff is still in the engine bay... MORE

As Brad says elsewhere, on early cars with single circuit brakes (pre '67 for US spec cars) the switch is on the right hand inner wing, screwed into a 4-way union and is actually a pressure switch rather than a pedal activated switch - a certain pressure in the hydraulic system triggers the switch. In my experience, they are pretty unreliable and stick in the open position, especially if you use silicone brake fluid; however, you may be able to 'unstick' it with a trick I learnt (thanks to Dave Wellings) This involves pouring boiling water and ice water... Yes, it's true, the crank, flywheel/clutch and I think the rear main bearing cap/oil return thingy (can't call it a seal cos it doesn't!) are different on transverse A series motors so it needs some serious machining to make it fit. An A Plus Marina/Ital engine will fit without too much bother though. The K series conversion is another story altogether - it's not just a case of taking one engine out and dropping the other in it's place. If you have a look at http://www.robsfrogs.org.uk/index2.htm#R1 it gives a description of some of the pitfalls (the conversion stuff is... MORE

Can I fit a metro 'A series' or 'k series' engine in my midget without too much bother? I have been told that the cranks are different so the gearbox won't mate up is this true? "Dark Smart" 15725... MORE

Ken- I was up at Sports & Classics acquiring a new gaitor for my gearbox and popped the Abarth question to John, the owner, as he had a couple of these left over from his last "OEM & Vintage Parts Hunt". He once again has managed to unearth a few of these but being so rare, they are not cheap by any means. I recall them going for $200 apiece about two years ago. Anyway, 203-655-8731/2 will get you there! An though a Thrush or Cherry Bomb sounds great, nothing accentuates the Series "A" high notes like an Abarth... MORE

Ah, yes Bob. You do recall correctly. He might disconnect the external pipe from the tank. That will loosen the inside pipe end to rotate inside the connection hole. May be possible to use a clean stick to insert into the connection fitting then push on the end of the inside pipe, apply pressure, and twist it into the proper angle. Otherwise about the only way to see the inside pipe end is to drop the tank, remove the fuel gage float unit and use the float opening hole to view and possibly use a screw driver or long... MORE

John, The chassis includes two doors, both fenders, the valance and the hood. The trans tunnel has been cut but the piece is still with the car. If you come after it and leave me the axles and diff, you can take the rest. They're sideways, not upside-down.... ;-) The timing marks on a Mini are actually on the flywheel, and there's a handy window in the Wok (bellhousing to you heathens) through which you can view them. Unfortunately, I am going to have to look for a smaller, dished unit. Let me clarify my physical disposition (no laughing hysterically...) I am 6'9" (somewhere around 202cm for the folks on the other side of the big pond) and, although more appropriate for my arm's length, need the steering wheel farther away from the dash in order to accomodate the space required to fold up my clutch leg. Can anyone recommend an aftermarket steering wheel for my '65 Midget. Trying to fit my circus-act frame into the Midget is fun enough, but I am having a serious difficulty in that there isn't enough room between the closed driver door and the steering wheel for my leg/knee to fit (and still be able to turn the wheel or to easily operate the clutch).
