Hi Bree, I know just how you feel, as about 18months after I got Ava, my Mk3 Midget, the clutch went. As it was winter, I decided to wait until the spring to have her repaired. By then the body had become unsafe! I couldn't afford to have her repaired. So she was laid up until funds were available. Meantime, passing a local house we saw Poppy up for sale, at an affordable price. Like you, I was getting withdrawal symptoms, so my husband bought her for me so I would not be Midget-less. The idea was to sell... MORE

by the way, item is listed on ebay f you know anyone who needs an engine or tranny...thanks to all of you! ~Rob "babyblumg" 9321... MORE

Mike, Thanx for the reply, I didn't know you Yanks raced midgets, I thought you just polished and talked about them. :o) :o) I thought that I had replied to you, but can't find a copy in my sent item file. At the moment I've got two 1275 engines on the bench in my garage. Both reputedly to be good. But want to try them out before fitting one of them into the car. I've not seen or heard either of them running , an they've both been standing , out a the car for several years. The engine... MORE

True. Not a one. There was, however, this fiat 124 I had once that could have/should have been introduced to an ax or sledge. As an auto - it made a fair 'flower pot'. Twas a road rock for sure. And my lack of ezaps in the last few days is a direct result of having my 74 back running. rebuilt trans, carbs.. still have the 'sputtt-sputt' before it (the car) has decided its ok to move. Few more days of serious interference by me, to it- and then its on the mgb..have the 5.0L running- ready to mate... MORE

Yeah call me crazy. The Midget should be running in about a month. The Mini PU awaits a lot of floor panel welding but should see progress once the Midget gets its Kent cam, Kenlowe, Alden Yellow, Datsun 5speed, and a set of progressive valve springs I got in the UK ten years ago. Still looking for an LCB for LHD and 1.5s Third in line is the faithful Austin 1300/America that served me so faithfully all those years when it was all I had. Right rear seat cut out so I could carry my standup string bass, what... MORE

I AM selling my 1098 & 4spd trans. I will sell them cheaper, to the highest offer as a bundle, or as individual units. The engine is in good shape, runs, but having oil pressure problems. Was going to overhaul it, but REALLY WANT a 1275 w/ 5 spd datsun. SSOOOO, email all offers to RMLRobL@... and I will close bids down on April 20, unless I get what I need before then. Thanks to everyone for your inputs. ~Rob :( I found out my car is not a 66' :) Its a 64//Midget MKII woohoo! researched by VIN... MORE

Hello, AUDI you do? Are you CITROEN comfortably? Now, either I'm DAF or just too CAVALIER to care, but I reckon it's no MINOR feat to fill a CARd with puns... You'll be CORTINA trap once you start reading it (DATSUN other one!) This is a real TRIUMPH for me, and I'll keep going until you ROLLS HONDA floor, pleading for MERCEDES; and then the neighbours will shout "Oi! VAUXHALL the noise about? If you scream any LADA, I'll set my ROVER on you! You want a kick up the ASTRA?" UNO what I mean? What an ESTATE to... MORE

Brad, at least you'd have some additional power (if you could keep the front suspension off the pavement). The amount of work would probably be about the same, but the B engine would have very little gain in the $$$ to performance ratio...'-) Gerard "gerardchateau" 9173... MORE

Rob, Not practically. The transmission is about 5 inched longer and biger around. The engine is considerably longer, taller and heavier. With the amount of extra weight and cutting you'd need to do, I can't think of a worse option to consider for a Sprite. Gerard "gerardchateau" 9170... MORE

Oh, man, Mike K! This is embarrassing!! (Turning red in facial color) I am not knowing, for I went over to Datsun 5 speeds years ago and cannot recall. Considering your question, though, I bet it's Whitworth (or whatever they call that). Where is the Chinese/Korean bashing Frankster when we need him? Where??!! It's like trying to find a cop when you need him!! Well, Gerard should be on shortly. It's 0715 in his part of town, right now........ (probably still sacked out, countin' sheep) anybody out there who knows the answer to this? HELP!!!!!!! Cap'n. Bob '60 :{)... MORE

Cap'n Bob Is there a special socket or wrench for removing the filler nut on a spridget gearbox? While in the car, most things I have tried seem to be a difficult fit. Mike K. kna331@... 9156... MORE

I'm posting this again for those who missed it last time. http://www.brit.ca/~tboicey/midget/midget_overdrive.html This is the best review of what's involved with installing a Spit overdrive unit. There is also a Frontline kit that uses a Sierra gearbox, but the conversion is very expensive relative to the Datsun and DOES require cutting. Gerard "gerardchateau" 9140... MORE

has anyone come up with a viable aftermarket 5 speed tranny for the 1500's? can someone explain how the spitfire o/d would work. are there any complications or problems that might prohibit this modification. any info greatly appreciated jay "jayb1967" 9134... MORE

TL- In my Datsun 210 5 speed....Mobile 1 synthetic per Rivergate recommendation (actually, any good synthetic gear oil is fine; THEY use Mobile 1!) I always used normal 75W80 in my Midget boxi before becoming a 5 speed kinda guy, for exactly the reasons you mention in your post. Just needs a more thorough warm-up in winter temps. Cap'n. "Shrinkage" Of course, fellow lister Brad Pace is correct in this respect, obviously! Just did my winshield this past week while installing new Rivergate engine and 5 speed. Runs great!! Winshield had two cracks in it this morning when I went downstairs, raring to go for breakfast. New windscreen on order and this time, we'll do a less "rigid" installation and leave room for temperature variation and a little "flex". But, it runs great!! :) Cap'n. Hello, am building a 1275 powered Locost (Lotus seven replica), found the correct Datsun 5sp (am planning to use the Morriservice kit), complete except for the hardware to connect the shift lever to the gearbox. Maybe it needs a bushing w/ a bolt through it? Is the bushing bronze or plastic? TIA Bill "dean99_1999" 9056... MORE

Seems to me the replacement bushes from Datsun are white plastic (Delrin??). As I remember, there is one on each side of the shift lever hole, and another cup-shaped deal that the ball sits in. chuck 9057... MORE

Hi Tim You sound jussst like me, I'm in the same position right now. Mine has been an ongoing project for many years,(on and off) I have also done almost all of my own work. Except for body and paint done about 18 years ago. Mine came with a 948cc, It now has a 1275. Ribcase gearbox, front disc brakes, heater and slot for a radio. I have attempted to refurbush/renew most parts on the car. It seems to run very well although I need to get it out oon the open road to really see what's going on.. Right... MORE

Stanley, The thrust washers I'm referring to are used to control the end play of the crankshaft. They are two pairs of semi-circular flat rings that straddle the crank at one of the main journals. In an A-series, they are located at the center main, but in a 1500 they are at the rear main journal. They are kept in place by the block recess they sit in and the crankshaft. I'm assuming that they fall out when the tolerance becomes great enough to slip out from excessive crankshaft end float. Minimum endfloat is important for a number of... MORE

When BMC was merged with Leyland, they gradually began merging over to Triumph parts for the Midgets, I suppose to reduce inventory in their parts bins, but I think secretly (or not) the wanted to kill off BMC products to favor their own. They even put an end to development of racing projects like the 1968 LeMans Sprite entry. As far as "improved" that's known as marketing, as there's nothing really improved about them that I can determine. Anyway, to your question, the 1500 are notorious for dropping thrust washers and anyone that rebuilds one should have them pinned.... MORE

Dave; Most modern cars with roller bearings bear directly on the clutch 'fingers'. It shouldnt be a problem. Judder is usually oil on the linings or a warped clutch plate- and since you've just replaced the entire clutch, i would expect the shudder to have disappeared. (You DID replace the entire clutch while you had the gearbox off, didnt you?...) HTH G "Grant Bowyer" 8853... MORE

Jason: Suggest you stick with Castrol 10/30 for the winters up in Maine. 20/40 won't be circulating initially very well in a cold "cold start" for sure. Even down here in "warmer" CT, I go right to a 5W/30 in the winter. More than 50% of engine wear and tear occurs during initial start; the quicker you can get oil on the cylinder walls and "in" the bearings the better off you are. I also go through the "trouble" of turning the engine over with the starter at least 7 times before introducing fuel and ignition on every start... MORE
