ATTN. UK listers, I have a friend in the UK that is still looking for a remote shift housing WITH the reverse switch casting that is on '68 and later Spridget transmissions. He has a non-reverse unit he can trade if you wnat. If you can help, please let me know. Gerard "gerardchateau" 8343... MORE

AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE WRITE-UPS AND CORRECTIVE ACTION TAKEN Never let it be said that ground crews and engineers lack a sense of humor. Here are some actual logged maintenance complaints by QUANTAS pilots and the corrective action recorded by mechanics. By the way Quantas is the only major airline that has never had an accident. (P stands for the problem the pilots entered in the log, and S stands for the corrective action taken by the mechanics. P: Left inside main tire almost needs replacement. S: Almost replaced left inside main tire. P: Test flight OK, except autoland very rough.... MORE

the '64 Midget listed for sale on the Minimania site. Minicomp 1380, 116 HP, 5 speed, Minitor wheels. It looks great in the photo. He's asking $5000. The Minimania site is slooow to load, be patient. The Midget is listed twice, photo w/ the second listing. There's lots of other interesting stuff there too. $300 Bugeye, anyone? "tloutrec" 8258... MORE

While helical gears do have a side load, this can be overcome by designing the =91box to handle these loads or using a more expensive =91V =92 shape gear (look at the chevrons on the front of a Citro=EBn =96 Andr=E9 Citro=EBn patented those, I think). Together with the more expensive machining, this is why they tend to cost more. The side load and power loss are small (of the order of 1-2%), so this is not really significant except where ultimate power transmission is needed (in racing, for instance). The power loss tends to heat the gearbox oil... MORE

Hi Jukka There are 3 types of release bearing for the 948, 1098 and 1275 Spridgets, each with different dimensions. Are you using a 'special' clutch on your race car? perhaps you need a 1275 clutch release bearing (1275 clutch is 'smallest' and 'furthest away' from the gearbox). You might like to get in touch with Peter May - he does a concentric release bearing kit with a roller release bearing for race cars - much better than a carbon bearing for those full throttle starts... I think what Growler is saying inter alia is that the straight cut 1st gear on a Midget box is weak. This I can attest to having had to replace 3 of them in the last 3 seasons... The 1st gear design (wrapping around the 1st/2nd hub) means that they tend to crack. The shock loading of dropping the clutch at 5000rpm off the start (really!) driving through slicks can't help... The constantly meshing 2, 3 and 4th gears straight cut gears don't seem to do too badly although the syncro hubs and baulk rings take a real bashing.... MORE

Yes the scoring matters. If you install new halfshafts they will be marked by the scored face, the marks will become stress raisers, and you really dont want me to start ranting about stress raisers again, do you? I'm sure everyone on the list is heartily sick of my "stress raisers on halfshafts" rant.. ;-) Yes you can replace the bearing yourself if you have a bearing puller. Dont lose the shims between the bearings and the case, and dont forget which side they go on! Before you install your new bearing, put the diff in the freezer for... MORE

Got to agree with Gerhard and Chuck. $5000 ought to buy a really nice '72 Sprite - a car which looks good up close, and has no major mechanical faults. It sounds like you could end up with $5000 in this car, and still have miles to go. For example, if you pay someone to do the work, you're probably looking at near $1000 just to fix the tranny. Another $800 for the interior...etc. True, they are normally noisy in 1st gear, but not "horrible". Got an MG, Healey or British car club in your area? Someone in a... MORE

been done on the outside is as cludgy as described, I can only guess that the innards are at least as bodged. And we know, from the description, that the tranny's not a happy camper too. You add up the cost of having someone else do the engine, the tranny, the body work, the interior work, and now you are driving a 7 grand Spridget. I'd give that one a miss at that price. I'd think more like $1500 to $2000 in the condition described. chuckC chuck 8178... MORE

Hi, "TT"- Depends upon the application. For the guy who's simply wants a good, stock motor to him around on a day by day basis, or the fellow who drives his once in a while on nice day "restoration", no. For the serious, street driven "tuned" application: don't leave home without it. Fr'instance, I am installing a Rivergate- built 1293 "tailored" for a Judson Super- charger. On today's readily available garbage octanes, heat is a big issue assuming you wish to run decent ignition advance to make installation of the blower worthwhile in terms of the extra power (torque)... Listers: A Midget owner here in Akron has asked me to post her car for sale to the list. 1979 Midget, metallic green with gray interior, no rust, excellent condition. Engine just totally rebuilt, new everything in engine, new clutch, Weber carb, new exhaust, new springs, new brakes, wiring harness replaced in 2000. Top is four years old and in excellent condition. Also includes tonneau cover and boot cover. All mechanical work was done by members of the local MG club with receipts for all work done in the last three years. All new parts came from Moss Motors.... MORE

Your bugeye will use 1/4 elliptic springs. The axle housing for these has fittings unique to the 1/4 springs so the housing is not 100% interchangable with later cars. Fitting a 1275/ribcase should have no bearing on the axle housing. Rearend ratios are a matter of preference. A 3.9:1 is as high as I'd go for any highway use. If you don't have springs, a new set will keep you from posting questions about leaning to the driver's side. schicmg@... 8067... MORE

Cressa, I have the exact same MG! Mine currently has the engine completely torn apart, with much of it soaking in cleaning fluid ready for a rebuild. The reason a clutch replacement is so expensive is because you must remove the engine to replace the clutch. I live in Newport, Oregon. Which part of Oregon do you live in? Email me directly at Brett@... and let me know. Thinking of selling it? Hmmm... I have my midget almost done... maybe I will be ready to start a second. Someone suggested I ask here - I have a 76 midget (anniversary edition) that needs, at the least, a clutch, a muffler, and some pipes replaced. I'm not mechanical at all. I have an estimate of around $1100 from a place that specializes in MGs. The body and interior are in fantastic shape - no Bondo. I had decided to sell it, but don't know if I should have the repairs done first, or sell it as is, or its value either way. Can you help? I would appreciate any advice offered. Thanks - Cressa Lynne, a typically helpless... MORE

My Bugeye, like many, developed a 1/2" sag on the left side due to constant weight of the driver. Everything looked okay, just that the rear spring had sagged a little. Assuming there are no other problems, it is possible to adjust the spring location to bring the car back level: Here's how it works. The rear springs are held at their front ends by two bolts which run up through the reinforcing plates, through the springs, and thread into a plate on top of the springs. By placing a spacer under the front ends of the springs and... MORE

Coachbad; The easiest swap for one of the older cars is to fit a 1275 A-series. It bolts straight in. The 1275 is more robust than the 1500, it's lighter, can be cheaply tuned to produce more power, and spares/tuning parts are abundant. You can also keep your existing transmission or fit one of the 5-speed kits. The 1275 really is a lovely motor. Sonorous and torquey, and high-revving. but to answer your question, yes, you can fit a 1500 to an earlier car. I believe you'll need 1500 engine mounts and brackets, and the 1500 transmission. Since I've... MORE

It can be done, but not as easily as the other way around. I believe it will require several chassis modifications to fit though. I don't know anyone in their right mind who would do that though. The 1275 is a better engine and a 5 speed kit for it is much cheaper that the one available for a 1500. Gerard "gerardchateau" 7883... MORE

Why would you want to put a 1500 into a "1275" when the 1275 is more easily and inexpensively "tuneable" and more robust ("later" thick flange blocks), as well as being a "sweet" runner? The rear axle ratio of most 1500's (later cars?) were 3.7 instead of 3.9, stock. Don't know about the gearboxi! Cap'n. Bob '61 :{) PilotRob@... 7880... MORE

I went the cheap route and purchased two 3' x 6' foot rolls of black automotive carpet from an auto parts store, and cut to fit. I actually carpeted the entire interior (except the door panels). I used a few tubes of generic "liquid nails" in a caulking gun... and glued everything down. It wasn't until I had to remove some carpet to access the transmission that I found out just how well this stuff holds. -Brett '76 MG Midget "Brett LaCroix" 7879... MORE

When I installed mine last year, I didn't use any glue. Thought about it, but had such a difficult time getting the old glue off in order to repaint the interior, that I decided against it. I had used snaps everywhere. The only hard part was the transmission tunnel. I used 3 snaps on each side. It fits very well. I also installed a layer of insulation/soundproofing under everything. Now I can check easily for any signs of rust, etc. Good luck Bob Irwin rlirwin@... 7836... MORE

The '61 came with a 948, the '62 came with a 1098 with 1 3/4" mains (junk motor) and then '63 1098 with 2" mains). The 1098 for the mk1 could have been a replacement along the line, anything can happen with the history of these cars. This 1098 discussed does not sound like the original motor for that mk1. I am planning on replacing my 948 with a 1275 I have in storage which is waiting for reassembly. The 948 is ok but not enough power for these Southern Califorinia freeways, especially I-5. My personal opinion on motor... MORE
