Bill, I am in the process of cleaning up the engine compartment on my '75 Midget. I have to pull the engine and trans to replace the trans with a better unit so I decided to tackle the job. I am using two methods: Wire brush on a drill and engine degreaser. I've got the upper half about done with the wire brush and it looks fine. The heavier gunk is below which I won't tackle until I pull the engine in a few weeks. I am freaking out about putting everything back together at this point. FYI-As an... MORE

Tim, With the gearbox-end still attached, can you rotate the free speedo- end. (Don't twist too hard) This would indicate a problem with the plastic drive-gear inside the gearbox. Lack of oil in the gearbox might not help with wear on this gear. Next, try moving the car (or even driving it very slowly) with the cable attached at the gearbox. If it rotates, try to stop it rotating. If it jumps, again the problem is inside the gearbox. If all appears fine, the problem is most likely the speedo IMHO Charlie '72 RWA (First ever car, 2 rebuilds,... MORE

I have now taken out the speedo-drive at the gearbox end and it looks fine. I would describe it as a plastic gear on a shaft with the end squared- off to drive the speedo cable. Spinning this on the cable-end registers on the speedo - so all is well at that end. It slots back into the gearbox nicely - its feels right - nothing appears to be loose or missing. So why doesn't it work ! Can it be a internal gearbox problem or is this unlikely ? For example, could the car drive well but not... MORE

I'd suggest that brake calipers and drums get too hot for powder coating. Powder coating melts at relatively low temperatures (thats how they make it stick to stuff) There are other, more appropriate coatings for brake components- similar to powder coating, but ceramic based. Try asking at race , hotrod , or aeronautical components suppliers. Alternatively you can buy 'brake caliper paint' in spray cans- sometimes its pretty good but usually its disappointing. Good luck! I had the same problem. In my case the drive from the trans was working, and the speedo registered when the cable was turned at the trans end. Turns out the square metal drive end of the speedo pickup gear had been rounded off. It looked as if the cable had frozen at some point and caused the drive end to spin around the square end of the cable. I lubed the speedo, replaced the cable, cleaned up the drive gear teeth, and pinched the metal drive end square. All this can be done with the transmission in the... MORE

When I purchased my '66 Midget it had no speedo cable, so I thought it would only need a cable to get the speedo working. Unfortunately, I have now fitted the cable and it still doesn't work. If I spin a small screwdriver in the back of the gauge the needle moves, so I suppose it must be at the other end. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should check first. I don't want to take out the engine and gearbox only to find there's something simple ! Tim R. Essex, UK. '66 Midget "timboreeves" 7300... MORE

shaped" tooth jamming device. Sounds like a handy tool indeed (read: brilliant), but I took the easy way this time, and went with the advice from Brent and Tim of removing the sump and jamming a 2x4 in the crankshaft to stop the rotation. Only managed to break my cheapo socket extension in the process, but was successful with finally removing the bolts and the flywheel. On to my piecemeal approach of removing, inspecting, and replacing (if necessary) engine components. Advice welcomed. At this point, I have no intention of getting into the guts as this was a running... MORE

Gary The gear lever on an A series box has a large ball which is the pivot for the lever and an extension which is the thing that moves the selectors. There are three different lengths (that I have found!) for the extension. This means that if you have a 'short extension' gear lever and a 'long extension' box you will not get the gears in properly and it will jump out. The contra situation is jamming it in 1st because the 1st/2nd hub has been pushed too far... As long as the extensions on the bottom of the... MORE

Hi all I own a 58 frogeye with later rib case gearbox it has the later gear stick from a Midget i.e. the one with a rubber/metal collar half way up. Question. Is it just a matter of replacing the later stick with the earlier one or are there other parts, different retaining bits etc? As for Guns. We seem to have a geographic divide on the issue. Pete, I have removed my 1500 flywheel both the way Haynes says "block of wood to block crankshaft" and used a pry bar through the starter ring to hold the flywheel. To use the wood, remove the oil pan and insert a 2x4 between the block and the crank. Using a pry bar, helped a lot with a second person to hold the pry bar, then popped the flywheel bolts loose. Having a hell of a time trying to remove the 4 retaining bolts for the flywheel on my recently obtained 1500. The crankshaft is rotating, and I can't get the bolts to budge. Haynes mentions locking the crankshaft in position with a wedge of wood, but does that mean I have to remove the timing cover and sprocket too?? Has anyone managed to remove the flywheel without having to remove the timing cover? I just want to mount the engine to my stand from the endplate. Thanks, Pete "peteski43068" 7176... MORE

Anyone who does not have the good sense to keep their guns locked up where they should be is hardly going to remember to keep 1 or 2 Blanks as the first shot or shots in their clip or chamber. At close range you would be surprised how much damage a blank can do.The long and the short of it is that if you have children you should have your guns where they can NOT be accessed by them. The majority of gun accidents are caused by stupid people who have had very little or no training whatsoever who... MORE

FWIW I mounted a nine inch fan from J C Whitney as a pusher. Install was very easy and with a variable thermostat I can set the fan for neary any temp. Definitely makes for a less cluttered engine bay and gets rid of that awful fan clutch. I lost two radiator cores to that thing before I got fed up and went electric. I am rebuilding the transmission in my 1970 midget. After replacing the layshaft, layshaft gear and bearings, syncros, and 1st/2nd gear I am almost ready to button it back up. While checking it out I notice that all gears seem to shift smoothly except second. I really have to slam it to get it into second. Everything seems to be lining up OK and still it is very difficult to get it into second. Based on the extremely ground-up condition of the 1st/2nd gear I am a little worried that this was the origional problem and the resulting metal... MORE

I am running the 1098 sprung clutch (diameter 7.25inc). Is the 6.5inch diaphragm clutch from the 1275 a straight swap, or does the flywheel have to be redrilled? Is the clutch actuating mechanism OK for this conversion or does this have to change also? Thanks for any advice. "moynanet" 7060... MORE

True, true, Martin. Being human isn't easy!! Thanks for your understanding! Maniflow most likely better item anyway, Martin, as pointed out by educated, fellow lister. Still, I hate mis-advising another, good intentions notwithstanding; must be more careful in future. Incidentally, have you racing fuel handy for your 10.5-1 "monster" motor? What kind of gas are you planning on running considering "substantial" static compression ratio, anyway? 1&3/4 SU (or 1&1/2) or Weber DCOE notwithstanding, this "tuned unit" obviously should "deliver" the goods when you get it properly set up, assuming you have octanes available to run decent ignition advance. Just went through a bunch of papers the PO gave me about 1 year ago. Found the original window sticker for the car. The port of entry was New Orleans, the dealer was in Kentucky. It listed for $4150.00 with options Anti-roll bar $35.00 and tonneau cover $65.00,tansportation $153.51 for a grand total of $4403.51. Checked it against the BMIHT certificate and all is the same except the engine was changed at some point in time. It also says the anual fuel cost is $375 baised on 65 cents per gallon. Hi Dwheil I had exactly the same problem with my 66 Sprite when I first got it. I took the tach out opened it up and located a variable resister (pot) inside. By marking the position of the screwdriver slot and trial and error adjustments and test drives at 30mph, 60mph and normal idle I managed to calibrate it in about half an hour. I think (from memory) for a standard 1098 engine and box fitted with standard ratio diff 1000 revs equates to 16.4 mph. Look on the Midget & Sprite web site or ask the list if... MORE
