I am planning to covert to disc brakes on the front of my bugeye. Can anyone tell me which master cylinder to use? I'm looking for something that fits with minimal modifications. Thanks oldcoventrian@... 6149... MORE

My reference book suggests (flywheel figures): - 1500 - 66 brake horsepower & 77lb ft torque 1275 - 65bhp & 72lb ft 1098 (10cc i.e. 2" main) - 59bhp & 65lb ft 1098 56bhp & 62lb ft 948 46bhp & 53lb ft I suspect all figures are for UK spec cars James "James Bilsland" 6132... MORE

Hello all, Since last week Ive lifted the engine complete with gearbox. This last week ive opened up the engine (and cried like a baby) Ive decided to have the cylinders bored and honed (too worn out for another option) and the rebuilder will place the pistons with crank. From from then on Im on my own with regard to how I rebuild the engine. I posted a query sometime ago about a fast road engine, but the job of shipping the engine to England and back and the fact that I dont get my fingernails dirty have let... MORE

Hey everyone, I came across what is believed to be a really good deal, and wanted to bounce it off you before going through with it. I can get a good 1500 engine and tranny setup, as well as front and rear axle assemblies with 4 wire wheels for a whopping grand total of just $250.00!!! This is one of those deals that sounds just too good to be true. I haven't seen the merchandise yet, but the owner says the engine ran good when removed a couple of years ago, and the wheels are from a '66. How... MORE

Hi, Pete- The gearbox is what you really need so if you know this to be good, it's great at $250 and the rest is just possible "icing on the cake" depending upon condition, IMHO. Cap'n. Bob '61 :{) PilotRob@... 6126... MORE

I think you will find that BTA548 is the part number of the diff housing. The M&G International parts book lists the diff housing assembly (complete with caps) as BTA549. The other part numbers you mention are for the complete assemblies with crownwheels & pinions, etc. There is a small flat on top of the diff housing (about 11 o'clock) which has stamped on it the number of teeth on the crownwheel and pinion - i.e. 9/38 for 4.22, 10/39 for 3.9. You will need to scrape off the accumulated crud and view it with a torch/flashlight and a... MORE

Well I put over 100 miles on the Midget today and enjoyed every bit of it. Unfortunately I have the rear oil seal leaking again. I did install the Mini Mania kit, but it looks like I pissed away $175. I am trying to get just the right amount of vacuum on the block to see if it won't stop the oil from being forced out the rear seal. If it comes to it. I have an idea to try fixing it, but it requires pulling the engine again. I think this time I will install the engine and... MORE

Does anyone out there know the numbers and what ratios they correlate to for rear axles? I just bought a 77 bodyshell with an axle in it and I'm curious to find out which ratio it has. Chris N. Raleigh, NC cwn8382@... 6005... MORE

I assume your 73 Midget has a 1275 cc engine? If so, I would love to be able to insert my dipstick into something made of aluminum - what's the probability you could make another one? I hate that plastic thing! Also, I now have this somewhat uncontrollable urge to check out the grease fittings ...;-) ...."I found the plastic dip stick tube broken off right at the engine block. Now that I have picked myself up off the floor from reading all this stuff, I fixed what I hope was the only oil leak. I found the plastic dip stick tube broken off right at the engine block. Since the bottom end was already broken, it was easy to remove, and after just 20 minutes with my Taig Micro Lathe, I fabricated a new one from aluminum, I believe Brits pronounce it aluminum, and installed in into the block with a touch of sealant. Other than that, I had a blast driving the Midget today and have already... MORE

Right, Rick! And don't forget the stub stacks and gearbox judder when you do that special servicing. Might want to attend to the zerks while yer at it! Good luck getting your car back!! -Pete pskalski@... 5938... MORE

No, this isn't the case! They may use a Spitfire engine, but the gearbox is different. It is the same 'box that was fitted to the Morris Marina and 4-speed TR7. ...and, no, the A-series smooth/ribbed case 'box(i) is/are not compatible with the 1500 engine. p.s. does anyone in the UK have a spare radiator for a 1500??? Chris Neggars: Far as I know, Spridgets went to a 3.7 here, in USA, in 1977; prior they were 3.9. Don't know of any 3.5 stock Spridgets though this ratio is offered by Victoria British, etc. I am currently using a 3.7 from a "late" USA Spridget in my stock 1098 engined Frog, hooked up to a 210 5 speed. Chris I was under the impression that the rear gear ratio stayed the same for all of the 1500s. I know I am turning a lot of revs when I'm on the highway trying to keep up the guys in Bs that are trying for the land speed record (or so it seems to the tightly wound little spridget) john Poynton 79 Midget "Yellow Fever" teachjp@... 5914... Hmmm!! I am con-fuse-ed, Dave. Are A series boxi "compatible" with 1500's 'cause I didn't think they were and if they are not, than what the hell have people been talking about with respect to "smoothcase"/"ribcase" choices in terms of 1500 engined cars?? Cap'n. Bob '61 :{) PilotRob@... 5931... MORE

Hi, Dave- Yep, that is what I meant! I have decided to use the Latin "i" as plural for the English "es"; as in "stewardi" instead of "stewardesses" (see how cumbersome "stewardesses" sounds and "feels" as compared to "stewardi"?) It's a good thing I am such a brain, David! Getting back to boxi, fellow listers have been talking about "smoothcase" and "ribcase" Series A transmissions as being suitable for 1500 Spridgets. Not knowing much, if anything about 1500's, I was under the impression that these cars were powered by Spitfire engines hooked up to Spitfire gearboxes, as supplied stock.... MORE

Any one wanting to know about the 5 speed conversion for the 1500 can email me direct on t.fenna@... and I will advise them ( I prefer not to use the Midget/Sprite list for discussing business related matters). As far as I know the Ford Merkur gearbox will not fit, this gearbox was mated to a V6 engine, but if anyone has knowledge of the Ford Merkur using a 4 cylinder 2.0L engine I would like to know. Hi all, I am experiencing a severe 'judder' when taking up drive in my '67 Mk4 Spri te. It only occurs when hot, but feels pretty bad. Could this be a clutch p roblem? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, thank you. David Jerram. Sprite Mk4 1967 - HAN9 - 1275cc - David Jerram 5888... MORE

Just to be sure: There are not 73 1275 with full synchro gearbox??? Are they all 1st gear non synchro as mine?? Jorge Dimitrakis 73 Midget 1275 RWA Buenos Aires - Argentina "Jorge Dimitrakis" 5895... MORE

As far as I know (just how far this is, I am unsure!), the 5 speed 210 conversions fit only "A" series, at least in terms of those I have seen advertised and know about. This is not to be interpreted as "can not be made to work" by someone who knows what they are doing (not me)! But, I've not seen any kits for the 1500. Cap'n. Bob '61 :{) PilotRob@... 5892... MORE

"Spitfire" (1500) Spridgets have all synchro 4 speed boxi, right? (or, wrong!). Cap'n. Bob '61 :{) PilotRob@... 5891... MORE

Tim(s): Yes, ribcase stronger and ratios a bit different; "gap" between 2nd and 3rd much wider in smoothcase, I believe. If "daily driver" (more or less!): If you get the chance to upgrade to a Datsun 5 speed, I would give this very serious consideration before installing British boxi. Datsun much, much more quiet in operation and because of better design, absorbs less horsepower (a bit) as well; also synchronized first along with better throwout bearing design, as well. Transmission/clutch problems involve pulling the engine, so "better" means reliability/dependability as in use over time=financial considerations as well in terms... MORE

I'm considering rebuilding my 1500's gearbox, but I'd like it to be more suited to highway driving. I was wondering if anybody knew if the 1500 spitfire had a lower ratio 4th, or any other car that used the same box for that matter. Chris N. cwn8382@... 5885... MORE

Reading that you say first gear isn't syncromesshed, is that why I hear a funny sound (sometimes) from my 79 1500 in first gear, and kind of feel bumps thru the shift lever, or do I have some other problems that are coming? Willy "Wm. Thompson" 5872... MORE
