Jim Your enquiry about gearboxes asks which one to use and also which Toyota gearbox Frontline uses. We no longer use the Toyota gearbox due to the short supply of the core unit, we now use the Ford sierra gearbox with a full range of parts to install the kit and options for clutch size, gear ratios even a sequential gearbox option. The details of the Ford based conversion can be found on our web site below. Please have a look at this and come back to me with any question and I will do my best to help.... MORE

Tim I may have my basic hydraulics messed up but given a larger master cylinder bore shouldn't you get less movement at the master cylinder (i.e.brake pedal) for a given movement at the brake caliper but also less force. With a 7/8 master cylinder therfore you should get a nice firm pedal but will have to press it harder than on a 3/4 master cylinder to make the car stop? Another option BTW for those less interested in originality as far as tandem master cylinder cars are concerned is to use a pedal box from a later car with... MORE

Jason, if you look on the inside of your drivers footwell, oop's sorry, passenger side, you have left hand drive haven't you, there will be a large oval shaped rubber grommet on the gearbox tunnel which will give you easier access to one of the bolts. You have been informed correctly, however it is perfectly possible to run the 7/8 bore master cylinder on the disc brake set up, you will have to apply the pedal pressure slightly harder but it will work, you can also add a servo to the system, although I do not recommend this on the standard discs as the extra pressure can help induce brake fade due to the small brake discs being unable to dissipate the heat fast enough. Hope this helps Tim www.mgcars.org.uk/frontline/ "Tim Fenna" 1099... MORE

Jason, The starter is mounted by two bolts and nuts. They might be hard to reach, when engine + gearbox are still in the car... I've seen a bracket somewhere (don't remember where it was...) which held the nuts in place to ease the mounting of the starter.....List: please help? Regards, Eeg. eeg.oberije@... 1089... MORE

I have the Toyota conversion and it works fine. However if I were doing it now I'd go Datsun, no question. The reason for this is that it is completely reversable, no chopping involved whereas with the other two the x-member has to come out an be replaced by a bolt in item. "Jeremy Cogman" 1040... MORE

Jim, Datsun 210 is the car model It is not the B210 Only know of that trans being fitted to the 210 but that doesn't mean that it wasn't applied elsewhere I haven't checked on parts availability but Nissan is generally pretty good. "Martin Farber" 1043... MORE

Midget. Is this OD adaptable to the A-series engine & ribcase gearbox? Is there a specific OD kit made for the Aseries? What are the pros/cons of OD versus a true 5speed? Sorry to ask so many questions, but the more I read and research into the subject the more questions I seem to have. My goal is a Bugeye I can cruise on the Southern California freeways a speed & over long distances. All advice and opinions are welcome. TIA Jim Rogers San Juan Capistrano jarplanner@... 1039... Folks: I am having no luck replacing the 'pesky ring' that holds the two pieces of the plungers in the master cylinder together. I checked with a local parts supplier and they have an OEM new replacement, but indicated the same unit fits from 67 to 79 MG Midget (inclusive). These guys have been wrong before (ie stated I needed 1 carb kit for both carbs ... but were surprised when I told them I only have one side draft original carb). Is their interchangeability information correct ? Roger Siemens 75 MG Midget Saskatchewan, Canada rnsiemens@... 1033... MORE

Bob My 60 was an original right hand drive, and from my restoration it appears that all of the holes are in the firewall and the master cylinder can be moved as well. you may run into a problem with the steering rack and you may need to swap your lever arm shocks as the travel distance is different. You need a RHD steering rack. This is the same as a LHD Morris Minor Rack they tell me. Yes, the pedal box is a straightforward move, though the high beam switch will need extension wires IIRC... You'll need to make up new clutch and brake lines of course.... Mike "Mike & Kerry Gigante" 952... MORE

I thought that before finishing my interior restoration on my bugeye that it would be a good idea to lube the driveshaft u-joints before I put the carpet over the access hole. I am able to see the lube nipple, but with the lube gun that I have there is now way that I can lube it. My grease gun has a straight portion of about 2" at the end of the flexible hose, and the nipple goes off at about a 45 degree angle in the other direction. Is there a special tool that I need to get... MORE

I've been converting a Minor release arm to use on my wife's car when it gets the hydraulic clutch. Problem is that I have since found a different Midget-type arm that is the same length as the one I took off my Sprite but has the pivot drilling at a different position, thus giving a different length between the pivot and the point where the pushrod pin sits. Obviously this also means there is a different length between the pivot and the centre of the carbon release bearing. Any ideas which one is correct and what the other one... MORE

Ahoy Spridgeteers, I have been led to belive that the '63 Sprite with disc brakes had a 3/4 inch bore Master cylinder (shared resevoir), as opposed to the 7/8 inch bore for drum brakes. My question is, can anyone tell me what length push rod goes in the 3/4 inch bore master cylinder? I've seen short ones and it appears that someone has brazed an extension onto one of the rods that came on my car. I want to order new ones if they need to be short, but I can't seem to determine what length goes in the... MORE

Folks: My MG Midget's master cylinder stopped pushing brake fluid to the rear right wheel cylinder. This dual line master cylinder contains a two part piston setup ... separate, but connected using a long, narrow metal loop. Upon removal and disassembly I found that the metal loop holding the front plunger to the back plunger (with a roll pin through each plunger to hold the loop in place) has broken. I need a replacement part ... and this piece doesn't come with a master cylinder re-build kit. Does anyone know where I could obtain this piece (the cylinder is... MORE

Need to bleed the hydraulics on my 1960 sprite and was wondering if bleeding the clutch from inside the passenger footwell is really the best/easiest way to do it? Also, since I'm replacing all of the hydraulic fluid, do you do the clutch or the brakes first? Thanks rlirwin@... 877... MORE

Hi everyone, I was able to use advice from the list and George Merryweather at Classic Restorations to lower the idle from 4500 down to 2500. Evidently the choke linkage was to tight on the choke cable so was always pulled(the cable probably needs to be replaced or at least lubed, as is hard to actuate) so I completely disconnected it. Now I believe it to be just a synch problem, what do you think? Plus need to adjust mixture still, have experimented but I think I need to go over the manual on that still. It was not... MORE

Bob I have the same problem and am also redoing my interior. I'm trying two things. First, I put a large bead of auto body sealer on the seam. That was two weeks ago and so far so good. But as the interior is still torn out, I haven't been driving the car yet. Second, when I install the carpets, I'm going to install the seat belt anchors under the carpet so that I can lif it up to clean around that seam. I'm also going to use a separate strip of the felt padding underneath the carpet that... MORE

Hi all Been running a 1380 (116bhp) with a Toyota 5 Speed & 3.9 diff for the last 3 years. Looked at 3.7 but a touch too tall for V8 baiting! 4.2 to short for fast motorway work (90+) 3.9 does it all for me. Look at your 5th gear ratio, mine gives 20mph per 1000rpm = 90mph @ 4500rpm "Perfick" However if its MPG you want you'll need to consult someone else, I can't even spell it! Cheers Mike M. Still restoring my 66 midget. Looks like I will be able to give it the "blue hood" and carpets Heritage Trust says it had (Riviera Blue). Thanks to all who provided info and leads over the last 8 months. NOW, I need some more help from the experts. I have replaced all new brake lines and fittings (Moss). I also had the (twin) master cylinder refurbished (Apple Hydraulics). The problem now is that I have a leak at the junction of the brake line and the cylinder. No problem on the clutch side. Got photos of the 8-inch rear and 9 inch front brakes for the spridget, if anyone is in an 'anorak' mood. 9-inch front JUST fits inside an early (frogeye etc) wheel rim. Need to find an A35/Frog stubaxle etc to trial fit it. Anyone near Cardiff? Rear brakes are already on a spare Midget casing, ready to swop over on my '72 when I change the axle to get a lower diff ratio. Not so messy to change the entire axle and less chance of getting oil leaks. "rob thomas" 728... MORE

Jim My personal preference would be to go the 5-speed route. that's what I did and after two seasons have never regretted it. A 5-speed will simply make your car more driveable. And quieter. It won't make other parts seem poorer in comparison. Since you already have disc up front you're in good shape for braking. Sticking with the 4-speed will have your Bugeye sounding like a bezerk sewing machine at 70mph. Should you decide to stick with the 4-speed, I don't think you'd be looking at 2-3 year periodic rebuilds. clearly the Gold Seal box will be worth... MORE
