Hi; I was hoping you will be able to help. I was out today with my '61 bugeye. First gear has always been noisy, today as the revs climbed, the noise became almost a banging from the rear of the trans tunnel? Noise disappears when shifting up to 2nd. thanks Michael (Iver28) Rifton, NY. mcmcsey@... 22680... MORE

Ken Charles! You can run heated or unheated. As David Jacobs states, the MG Metro runs heated. And as David says, you can run either way and see which way is best but, before you do..... you need to understand the effects of water manifold heating and why it exists. It is basically there for economy of operation in light load driving...like around town sort of stuff. As David says, heating the mixture allows for better vaporization of the fuel. True. This allows for a "leaner" mixture for more economical operation (better gas mileage) in part throttle, light load... MORE

It's full of a coarse steel wool - kind of like a Brillo pad (steel pan scouring pad) but without the soap 8^) Difficult to clean thoroughly and effectively I would have thought - I read somewhere that the best "cleaning" is to cut the canister in half, clear out the contents (inc. mesh) and weld back up, leaving the can empty! Me , I'm replacing the whole timing cover complete with new canister on my 1275 rebuild. Steve "Steve Clark" 22656... MORE

"Sensibly nippy at reasonable cost" Oh...no problem Ken Charles...for we here to serve!! :) May I suggest you take a look at the spec. of Rivergate's rebuilt performance 1275 for the street? www.rivergate5speed.com Click on the "blue" and on page 2 scroll down the left margin 'til you see the pictured engine whereupon....there you go! :) You can rebuild your's to the same spec....tried and proven by "those who know"!! Hia Ken, I agree with what Capn Bob had to say, just a couple of points that have not been raised. 1. You mention high ratio rockers (1.5 to 1) are you talking about roller rockers or standard type rockers with the higher ratio??? see below as to why i ask. As C Bob said not that much of a performance gain, but one of the main reasons to fit roller rockers is to cut down the side loadings on the valve when using high lift camshafts. The other point is what you consider to be a road cam... MORE

The IF of HIF stands for 'integral float'. It's not a seperate assembly but sits below the throttle assembly, around the jet. There is no way to adjust the float for angle so I guess it's designed to be fairly tolerant of mounting angle. Come to think of it (off the top of my head and it's a while since I've been inside mine) the end of the jet sits in the pool of fuel in the float chamber the top of which is nowehere near the top of the jet as it is in HS carbs. I wonder... MORE

No, no Beckers!! Don't lay this on me....wrong guy!! :) Vizard dyno testing shows little, if any performance gain with 1.5 rockers except at higher rpms....me, I'm just the messenger!! Good point about the side loading on the valve stems...absolutely...."rollers" are the way to go in this respect for sure in any case, and the higher the lift, the more "side loading" becomes an issue in wear and tear in terms of "travel" across the stem end. My point is to have an idea of what you want in this respect to begin with, then educate oneself on how... MORE

I was wondering the correct engine starting procedure for a 1972 MGB 1800CC 4spd w/electric fuel pump and twin SU carbs. I can usually get it to start with manual choke on third try after pump stops clicking without touching the acceelerator pedal. I was wondering what the original owners manual said, if anything. The car was recently given to me and it has become my duty to bring it back to order. I have rebuilt and adjusted the carbs as well as performed normal tune-up procedures. Your help is appreciated! Hi guys is this the same group i left, some 2 yrs ago. well im back at my sprite now. anyway just started stripping it to replaace the 2nd cill, and also fitting a 5 speed gear box while at it. So while the engine is out im looking to boost power. ie free flow exhaiust , hi lift cam. & poss hi lift rockers . i intend reusing the twin HS4 carbs but fit k & n Filters. Can anyone tell me of a proven choice of parts. ie f0r fast rd use. If I fit cam is... MORE

Very reasonable...Jim Lodder. Alternatively, I can check out in, then rent an airplane that could do this. Let's see, we'd need something that could carry a Spridget, yet had good forward speed? I'll work on this but, rough calculations suggest this roll bar installation "by air" would amount to a little more than 10,000US. Not unreasonable for a once in a life time installation!! Well, I think I win the "I knew I probably shouldn't have done that" prize for the day. Last week I power washed the engine on my '78 1500. I proceeded to drive it for about 20 minutes, after I cleaned the engine. Everything was fine. Today I go to start it up - turn the key - nothing. No clicking, nothing. I find that the lights work, and the brights, but I cannot flash the brights. I can also hear the whine of the fuel pump. I look under the hood and check every connection - everything looks... MORE

yes, late 1275s had a needle roller spigot bush as standard (part No. 13H 4653 or AHU 1026); this has a bigger OD of 0.750" as opposed to 0.625" on earlier engines, so they're not interchangeable. The factory parts catalogue doesn't state when the change occurred, so it's a case of measuring/checking what you've already got. Regards David "David Jacobs" 22521... MORE

Brad, Is this car an import for Dodge similar to an Eagle, made by Mitsubishi? If so STOP TRYING TO START IT NOW, IT IS PROBABLY THE TIMING BELT!!! If it is similar to the Eagle it will have a zero clearance valve system that will crash if the timing belt gets too far out of sync, about a $1,200.00 bill to rebuild the head. I know, my daughter's 1994 Eagle did that in the middle of the Penn. Turnpike two years ago. Can give you lots of pointers on the repair. Steve Quandt "Steve Quandt" 22522... MORE

Anyone out there have any experience with these cars? It is a 93 3000 GT, it just up and died, no warning. Now it won't start, and turns over like it has no compression. The timing belt is turning, but it feels a bit "chunky" when you put your finger on it while it turns. Brad Brad Fornal 22520... MORE

OK all, got one. Have any of you EVER heard of a caged needle bearing Pilot Bush/bearing in a STANDARD motor, i.e. DRY CLUTCH set-up as in 948/1098/1275, 1500 Spridget ??? And I DO mean just plain old run of the mill Spridget set-up!! Brad Fornal 22512... MORE

Don You're most welcome to the advice. I'll try and answer some of the questions you've asked here. As far as I'm aware, the MIG wire sizes relate to the thicknes of metal you're welding. As a rule of thumb, the wire size diameter should be slightly less than the thickness of steel you're welding. So, my wire size was 0.9mm so that was ok for steel thicknesses of about 1.0mm, although in principle is was fine for steel of about 0.8mm, which roughly equates to 18-20sg steel thickness. My 90 amp welder had 4 power settings, Min/Max and... MORE

Guys... Much too early to tell....we're jumping the gun yet, the government is under pressure with respect to the producing of WMD evidence so I'm sure we'll hear from them in the coming week or so. The people we've captured over there do not know that Saddam and his sons are dead so....I doubt they're doing a lot of "talking" except to "mis-direct". I know I'd feel "less than secure" in their shoes for sure, and I Iraq is a big country in terms of the fact we are looking for needles in a haystack, so to speak. But... MORE

Nigel, Thanks for the lesson. The manual that came with the welder, a similar model to yours, 90 amp MIG flux wire high and low switch, only gave instructions on changing the wire but no instructions on how to use it except to brush the metal with the wire tip to start the ark . . . that was it. It has a wire speed control . . . but nothing said about setting it for various jobs ?? Came with a 4" spool of .030 wire. also uses .035 wire but I haven't a clue as to the... MORE

Hi Folks! Greetings from Fairbanks, Alaska I have the opportunity to buy a 1976 Midget Special. It's been sitting on flat tires, and hasen't been started or driven(far as the landlord knows) for a number of years. It's been kept covered, paint's in good shape, interior very good, top has cracks, but there's a new one in the trunk Only one small dent in the right side door, looks like a base ball hit it. All glass is good. What would be a good lo-ball starting price.($ Please if possible) The landlord wants to re-coup money lost from the... MORE

Hey all, I just want to tell a story about an averted disaster at my home yesterday. I have an older home (built in 67-68) that had used the Zinsco brand breaker box. The design of this older box is VERY dangerous. If you live in an older home, please see if you have this in your house!! What happened at my house was, I had lights go out, but the breaker was not always tripped. I rewired the ceiling fan I had installed a month ago, I had found a loose neutral wire. When I went to turn... MORE

Everyone seemed to think it was the thrust washers causing a bad vibration upon acceleration. I replaced them yesterday, and while the old ones were worn a bit, the new ones did nothing to fix the problem. Now I need suggestions on where to look for where it's coming from. The engine is running perfectly, no vibration when not under load, only when accelerating. I am not sure how to tell if it's coming from the tranny or the rear end, but it does seem to coast with no problem. Could this be a bad motor mount? the driver's... MORE

I've recently changed the diff (a 3.9) on my mk2 Sprite. It was not whining at all but very rattly when coasting in or out of gear. I've put in a 4.2 until I get my hand on another 3.9. The 4.2 is a bit whiney but very little rattling though there is a little. The thing is, while doing the change I noticed the splines on the halft shafts were beginng to wear. On the leading edge of each spline there was an area of wear about 1/16th inch wide (i.e. that far 'down' the valley of the... MORE

The advanatge is in not lowering the octane of the input charge with oil vapour. Especially important these days because of all the octane numbers we've lost in the years since the cars were amde. I must admit I cannot see the point of this when the running engine provides a good source of vacuum at the intake manifold that needs nothing more than a pcv valve and a bit of pipework. I just do not see the advantage of introducing additional complications and more things to go wrong. Don't misunderstand me - I have no case to say... MORE
