Hello, AUDI you do? Are you CITROEN comfortably? Now, either I'm DAF or just too CAVALIER to care, but I reckon it's no MINOR feat to fill a CARd with puns... You'll be CORTINA trap once you start reading it (DATSUN other one!) This is a real TRIUMPH for me, and I'll keep going until you ROLLS HONDA floor, pleading for MERCEDES; and then the neighbours will shout "Oi! VAUXHALL the noise about? If you scream any LADA, I'll set my ROVER on you! You want a kick up the ASTRA?" UNO what I mean? What an ESTATE to... MORE
A bit late I admit, but WD-40 is about the best starting fluid you can use. Much less volatile and provides a bit of lubrication. However, I would not suggest doing your deep breathing excersizes over either product. David A. Brad, at least you'd have some additional power (if you could keep the front suspension off the pavement). The amount of work would probably be about the same, but the B engine would have very little gain in the $$$ to performance ratio...'-) Gerard "gerardchateau" 9173... MORE
Gerard or Rob, do either of you know if a 1798 from a MGB will or would fit in a midget. A guy has one he rebuilt for his car, but ordered another high performance engine instead(tax return..lol) Id love to put it in, if it is feasable...Thanx! ~Rob 66' Midget "babyblumg" 9168... MORE
Rob, The man I would recommend as the absolutely best for MG "A" Series motors is Mike Miller at Comptune. He is located in upstate South Carolina. He has been working with these motors for over 25 years as a hobby and part-time business. Mike races a 1275 cc MG Midget in F Production at the SCCA National races. I have known Mike for over 17 years both as a friend and as a competitor. He recently built a new "Hot Street" 1500cc motor for my son's 1976 MG Midget. It turned out great and we now have him... Coming a bit late to this thread, but here's another piece of information about the "K" series. This did indeed replace the A+ in the Metro - it became the "Rover 100" in the process. The "K" series also powers the MG "F" and "TF". (The "F" was based around the clever Hydragas suspension from the Metro - clever, but too difficult to make it work reliably in the longer term for a sportscar. They ditched the suspension and replaced it with coils, gave it a facelift and called it "TF") Anyway, although the "K" seires is a completely... MORE
Hi all Im new to this list and just wanted to know if Rostyle wheels as fitted to MG Midget's are 4" PCD. The reason im asking is im currently running a Hillman Imp for use in competition and need the better choice of tyres available on 13" rims. (Imps run 12" wheels). If these wheels are the same fitment does anybody have a set for sale condition not important(would rather an old set).In the north west preferably. has anyone come up with a viable aftermarket 5 speed tranny for the 1500's? can someone explain how the spitfire o/d would work. are there any complications or problems that might prohibit this modification. any info greatly appreciated jay "jayb1967" 9134... MORE
TL- In my Datsun 210 5 speed....Mobile 1 synthetic per Rivergate recommendation (actually, any good synthetic gear oil is fine; THEY use Mobile 1!) I always used normal 75W80 in my Midget boxi before becoming a 5 speed kinda guy, for exactly the reasons you mention in your post. Just needs a more thorough warm-up in winter temps. Cap'n. "Shrinkage" Of course, fellow lister Brad Pace is correct in this respect, obviously! Just did my winshield this past week while installing new Rivergate engine and 5 speed. Runs great!! Winshield had two cracks in it this morning when I went downstairs, raring to go for breakfast. New windscreen on order and this time, we'll do a less "rigid" installation and leave room for temperature variation and a little "flex". But, it runs great!! :) Cap'n. Tim Years back I used to be able to tune SUs and adjust timing with the best of them. Used to race a 948. We should get together I still have some of my old SU adjusting tools. I think we can get it running just fine. Doug 77 Michigan Doug Pletcher 9093... MORE
Well, Tim- It could be a number of things not necessarily carb related. (ether either, ether either, either ether...I can't do it!!) Peter C. of nosimport states: "90% of carb. problems are electrical". Amen to this!! "My engine is difficult to start when cold" does not contain enough specific information for me to work with to "trouble shoot" with any decent chance of reasonable accuracy at my experience level. Now I just walked in from dinner and I see Gerard has already answered your post so he's already hit the basics on SU's. And he has said it all,... MORE
Funny, Never saw either of the questions. I have been wondering what is going on because I seen to be recieving occasional emails. I will get replys to questions I have never seen, Or someone will post saying it never made it the first time. I wonder what is going on. To try to answer the "wiring question". Could it be the ground of the advance plate? On my 1500 this ground "wire" is a copper tab that maintains a contact between the movable and the stationary plates. when this tab was not making good contact, the engine would... MORE
Oh, yeah- Using ether to start one's LBC is something to be done sparingly, if at all. Breathing it however, can be fun! Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 9077... MORE
Matter of choice, size and damage to be done I suppose. Any one gets upset/angry nuff.. start looking for something ..hands, rocks (middle east will not cease to be a trouble spot until all the rocks are removed) something to use in defense. Offense is another subject, can do without the 'O', but 'D' is in each of us. In the grand scheme we are not that far removed from the hairy fellows that enjoy banana's. Now don't go off the deep end..OK say a 'higher power' started it all, we just evolved as that power wished. smooth any... MORE
Just a word about the durability of the A-series engine. My sprite came with a 948cc. I pretty much used the car as a daily driver. Being 16 and still trying to figure out how to read the Bently service manual, all those British terms" I did not really know too much about tuning. Well I drove the car for a few years as the oil pressure dropped lower and lower until it had no pressure at idle. But I kept driving it. Finally I came across a 1275 and made the swap. I took the 948 apart and... MORE
Bill, I just went through this, I used an extra gauge light socket and bulb, stu ck the bullet connetor under the distributer wire cover and linned up #1 cy linder to TDC. Rotate the dist. untill the light goes on. This gets the tim ming close. Don't forget to center the fine tunning adjustment thumb screw on the dist. Get some bright paint and make a mark on the pully when you fi nd that elusive notch. I put some paint on the top of the timming cover and the pully, so I didn't have to lay on... MORE
Look down at the pulley while you turn the engine over slowly by rolling the car in top gear (ign off, please!) You'll see a shallow groove, like a thin saw cut across the pulley. Why is this in such a difficult place to use? There's a perfectly good reason for that... but it escapes me at the moment. Since this is all such a pain, maybe you'll time it as many others do: Once you get it to run, keep advancing the timing until it just pings, when hot, at 2000 rpm full throttle. Then back the timing... MORE
NO No NO NO you should not use ether to start your car. once in a while maybe , but not all the time when its cold. Somehow the engines seem to remember that it will start on ether , then it will demand it all the time, even when its hot. A good battery, spark, and the correct amount of fuel / air and correct timing (oh and good but not high compression) should be all you need. Regards Alan "alan.east-jones" 9028... MORE
Bill- This is why the "timing marks" are "on top" on my new Rivergate motor; it was actually a condition of them building it!! You see, having the timing marks "on the bottom" was part if a "revenge" thing, a "commie-pinko" type of plot. This is what the British did to get even with us for "breaking away" in the first place and winning "that" war in the second place. They produce this neat little car and drive us nuts with Lucas electrics and timing marks in the most ludicrous of places. (Could you find a more ridiculous spot... MORE

Rob There are (surprise) two schools of thought. Classic, standard concourse, as it left the factory i.e. Slow, leaking and daylight operation only! (Sorry) Classic looks, proper engine, the right performance for the brakes and the ride NICE OR the classic sleeper, fast and fun: 1380cc, big brakes, dampers that damp etc etc. Follow your heart, BOTH options ROCK ! As I understand it, although I've never owned or worked on a Spit/Midget 1500, the bottom end (rods and crank) are of marginal strength, with the result that bearings wear fairly quickly. More to the point, high RPM and/or increased HP often results in a broken con rod. The A series engines, on the other hand, are more durable in this respect. In fact I have read somewhere that A series engines were subjected to 100 hours @ full throttle and max HP as part of the general quality control, and that they would stand this without failure. That's... MORE
