Jeremy, et al. Any good machine shop should be able to make you a set of bushings for your pedal pivot points. I have made numerous bushings for other applications out of a porduct called (in the business) Oil-lite (sp)......it is a medium hardness red brass alloy impregnated with oil. We have used it here at the plant for years for babbit type bearings on applications much more demanding than our brake pedals. Just my tuppence worth. David A. I've just fitted two new leaf springs to my Frog, it now looks like a Landrover! there's a 5" gap between the top of the tyre and the wheel arch and although everthings connected correctly the poor car is listing to the right. If anyone out there has fitted these bloody "uprated" springs and has managed to return their Frog to a nomal height., please email me or ring 07931 646794 John "johnhendrusson" 22649... MORE

A collapsed spring. Hmmm.... I will look into that possibility. What does a collapsed spring look like? Simply broken? What about a sway-bar? Will that help? The other thing that is odd is that when I am going around a slight curve and I hit some bumps, the car seems to *float* or slide a bit - it dose not seem to *hug* the road like I would expect. Maybe I need stickier tires or more weight - I suppose I picked the wrong time to go on a diet... :) Thanks Brad. -Tom "tmruwart" 22648... MORE

measure inside dimensions of a window frame. They each need to be somewhere about 3/4 of the track width between the inner faces of the front wheels - give or take a few inches. Measure by holding the sticks side by side and slide them lengthways so that one end of each stick contacts the face edge of each wheel rim. Mark the overlap position on the sticks accurately with a sharp pencil. Do this at the rear radius of the wheels first, with the sticks held close up to the chassis rails or engine sump. Repeat at the... MORE

As there was a thread recently regarding front end alignment, beginning with message 22461, I have posted a couple of photos of a simple apparatus that I used this week to estimate and rough-in the toe in on my Sprite this week, in case it might be useful. The apparatus comprises a 48" construction ruler, and a pair of 18" x 24" L squares. The short legs of the L squares are clamped to the opposite ends of the ruler, such that the long legs extend outwardly from the ruler and parallel to each other, such edges being separated... MORE

I have a 8/75 mg midget and am having a major problem with it. The problem is that has way too much negative camber, tip in at top of tire, on the left front. I have replaced the off center bushings in the left lower a-arm, bought a shop manual from Moss and checked the measurements on the pivot points for the lower a-arms, checked the distance measurements on the left lower a-arm against the right lower a-arm, pulled and checked the left shock mount to see if it had been modified and it hasn't. I guess my question... MORE

Does anyone have any ideas for flushing clogged brake lines on a 1972 MGB? I have thought about brake parts cleaner or compressed air or maybe even a combination of both. At this point I am unable to get fluid from reservoir to wheels by applying pedal pressure with known good master cylinder. Setup is dual tandem, non servo type. Thanks, Warren "nipper6579" 22577... I came across rather a neat tracking device. It consists of a base with a very low table on it which slides sideways. When the car is pushed/driven across it, the 'toe' whether negative or positive, causes the the table to move sideways. It is attached to a pointer which tells you what the setting is. It is very easy to use and has eliminated prematurley worn tyres. I found best results were obtained if I made a non sliding dummy 'ramp' for want of a better description, identical in profile to the original, for the other wheel. In... MORE

doesn't the Landcrab uses five stud wheels?if so, they won't fit cos the MGB has four stud wheels. Regards David http://austinrover.mg-rover.org "David Jacobs" 22530... MORE

Hello all, I was wondering if anyone out there had a spare ignition switch for a 76 midget with a locking steering wheel. If you would like it to go to a good home, please contact me and I will ensure that it is treated very well. Thanks, Matthew Pfeil "Matthew Pfeil" 22528... MORE

David When I changed the rack on my 66 I did it by placing a straight edge against the front rims with spacers to clear the tyres and used a tape rule. I only used my method to make the car drivable for the 2 miles to my nearest tyre shop who checked it for me and said it was 10 mm out (I thought that was quite good, they were horrified). The tyre shop clamped my steering wheel in the correct central position and set the correct toe in of 0 to 3.1mm all for ?12 (about $20... MORE

Yep, David... The new cars are definitely far better "runners" for sure. They run efficently on 87 unleaded PON and polute not and are much more safe than ever before BUT.....they are anything but user friendly when it comes to maintenance. They are expensive as hell to maintain when they have a problem. Simply opening up the taps at each wheel and the clutch slave with an empty beer can at each "tap" and waiting for the fluid (drip, drip, drip...slowly but surely as they drain simultaneously at the same time) in the MC to fall to almost the... what have you got against alignment specialists?! Seriously, once you get it something near, by whatever method you come up with, I'd get it checked out properly. There could be a problem with the string from the rear wheel method, as the front and rear track aren't the same (the difference is not so much for Rostyles as for wire wheels) One way of doing it would be to use a plumb line from the front wheel rim, front and rear (you'll probably have to use a spacer to clear the tyre) and mark the equivalent point on the... Hi Folks! Greetings from Fairbanks, Alaska I have the opportunity to buy a 1976 Midget Special. It's been sitting on flat tires, and hasen't been started or driven(far as the landlord knows) for a number of years. It's been kept covered, paint's in good shape, interior very good, top has cracks, but there's a new one in the trunk Only one small dent in the right side door, looks like a base ball hit it. All glass is good. What would be a good lo-ball starting price.($ Please if possible) The landlord wants to re-coup money lost from the... MORE

Brad Cool idea. Very creative. Just don't let any lawyers find out about it. If it gets a flat tire, there will be a chain of about a hundred people to sue. Hey speaking of chains, how about this. You add a part to the car, put your name on the list, send it on, and start four other cars, put your name on those lists, and send them to four other people. They add a part, put their name on the list, start four other cars and send those on... After five years, you could own a hundred... MORE

Actually, Jeremy... The crankcase pressure is in and of itself the propellent in a "ventilated" rather than "evacuated" system, the former of which I prefer for exactly the reason you state in your post to Guy Weller....less dilution of already diluted octanes. Fr'instance, I think it was Chris who mentioned dragsters with vacuum pumps hooked up to evacuate crankcase pressure and considering THEIR applications I can well nigh understand this, considering THEIR crankcase pressures!! Whoa, whoa!! :) Obviously, for the normal LBC daily driver this would be overkill but the point is made, though we are talking apples and... MORE

could a faulty u-joint cause this? I just ran the car in 4th gear with the rear wheels lifted off the ground, and heard a slight knocking coming from under the car. David, surprised that you havn't come across this stuff - its been around for years. Locktight make a range of these engineering adhesives. The common one is a blue fluid used extensively to stop nuts vibrating loose, but they also make several grades of adhesive for associated applications. One such is designed for fitting bearings and typical purpose would be to prevent an outer race turning in its housing (eg for wheel hubs) This is what I used for the 1500 thrust washers. I don't know if it made a difference but it was easier than pinning and I... MORE

the balancing machine consistes of a rotating spindle to which the wheel and tyre is fitted. The machine is run up to speed and a set of sensors then detect where the 'heavy' point is on the circumference. Lead(?) weights (the machine calculates how much) are added to the wheel rim opposite the heavy side to counteract this. The machine should also detect where the out-of-balance condition is across the width of the tyre, so sometimes weights will be on the inside, sometimes on the outside of the rim. To get an accurate assessment, the wheel needs to be... MORE
