The seal is based around a plated steel u section with lateral splits to make it flexible. It relies of some barbs and its springiness to hold on. However being mild steel it's not really that springy. The trick is to spread just the end a tiny bit to get you started then use the seam you are putting it on to open up the seal as you feed it on, a bit like doing up a zip (OK nothing like that but its the closest analogy I could think of). If you take the bit you've used so far off and close it up with some clean pliers you can have another go.
It's not the best stuff in the world and if the car gets used alot you may find yourself replacing it every few years.
