Another trick I've found good for cleaning corroded wires has been to use the instant copper cleaner liquid, can't remember the name right now but comes in a black bottle. Dip the end of the wire in some in a small cup and let it sit for a minute or two and rinse and wipe clean. This will get rid of 99% of the corrosion and gives you a good solderable surface.
