Scotch nose is a type of bit. as in brace and bit. I will have to look it up, but I think it might sometimes be called a shell nose. The cutting edge is enclosed in a loop, which makes it much stronger. A norris, well that was a bit of a cheat really, because it is a highly sought after and very good type of jack plane. They just do not judder and cut very smoothly. Only trouble is that they are collectable, so people who just want to use them can't usually afford them. I've used one, but can't afford to buy one!
