Sorry for the non LBC, but I know that a lot of you have much greater computer and graphics knowledge than I do.
Question: I have some B&W 8 X 10 photos that I need to copy. I need them to be as close to the original as possible and I might have to blow them up to 16 X 20 inches. I think I wouild like to try and scan them rather than make 4 X 5 copy negatives. If I scan them and want to keep the highest resolution possible ( equal to the original) what DPI should I scan them at?
I have been told that 600 DPI is good enough but I want them to be equal to the original. Is 1200 DPI enough or 2400 DPI or do I have to go up to 4800 DPI to get really good loss-less reproduction?
I am asking because I have 100 of these un published historic 8 X 10 photos of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake that will be going on sale in an album, and I am thinking about publishing a calendar of the earth quake for the 100th year celebration.
I need to buy a scanner anyway so I need to know how high a DPI I should be looking for. 1200 DPI is quite common and even 2400 DPI is common, is that high enough resolution to do my project?
I know some of you are very knowledgeable in this area.
