G'day all
On The Beach was filmed out of Melbourne, a southern State Capital city that is cold, windy, wet, miserable, and loved only by Melbournians. I can say that, since I live just out of Sydney - sunny, mild, and the TRUE best city in Australia. No, we aren't parochial - much.
When Ava Gardner was getting in the plane to leave Melbourne after the film, one of the reporters asked her what she thought of the place. She replied: "It's a great place to make a movie about the end of the world."
Nuff said.
